Rangers 3B Chris Davis

New to the hot corner this year, Rangers slugger Chris Davis has been tearing up the California League with Bakersfield. I watched Davis last season in the North West League, where he played 1B and RF, and I was very impressed by his slugging abilities. This season he already has 18 HR and is batting .297 with a .914 OPS, he has made quite a few errors at 3B, but that is to be expected in his first season at the position. Davis is only 21 and was drafted in the 7th round last year, and appears to be climbing the pospect ladder with the Rangers. I see him as a future big league slugger capable of hitting 30+ shots a year. What do you all think of Chris Davis?

Big, big bat
He's a masher, no doubt.  I wish he would walk a bit more, and he's likely to move to 1B at some point -- he may end up with more errors than homers this year.  Slugging .578 for the year, .667 in June.

5th round
and the BB/SO is the main source of concern, but you have to be pretty impressed with a JC guy doing this in his first full season.

Still it's the Cal league
The offensive numbers there are amazing.  If he does this in AA then i'll be impressed.

The point
to me is that he's fresh from Navarro JC and among the top hitters in that league. That's a big jump from last May to this season.

Indeed
He is hitting well compared to everyone else in the league, so it is not just the park factors.

off topic - Vince Sinisi
I've been meaning to get some opinions on Sinisi's emergence in the PCL this year. Didn't want to start a thread, and thought this was an applicable topic.

So, what are we looking at as far as big-league productivity with Sinisi? Does he have the outfield chops to hang in left field in San Diego? Or does he project more as a Mark Sweeney-type utility corner lefty/pinch hitter? Or is he destined to be a career AAA player?

Just looking for some feedback. Sorry to crash your thread, Mike.

I think
Sinisi could still have a big-league career as a regular. He was always pretty highly touted, called one of the best pure hitters in his draft but he fell to the rangers in the second round because of money demands. I remember Grady Fuson saying something along the lines that Sinisi more than anybody else reminds him of a young Jason Giambi. He got off to a good start in pro ball, but a freak injury (collision) to his wrist completely stalled his career. Its nice to see him bouncing back in AAA and I hope he makes it.

I watched Chris Davis last night in Visalia
Davis had a rough night in the beginning.  He struck out in his first three plate appearances and had his share of ugly swings.

Swings from Davis' second at-bat:

Swings from Davis' third at-bat:

Down 4-2 entering the top of the ninth, Davis became the hero for Bakersfield battling against Daniel Stange, Visalia's closer who dials it up in the mid-90s.  Davis fell behind 0-2, took a ball on Stange's third pitch and then went with an outside pitch and drilled it over the left-field wall to tie the game at 4-4.

BAD CAMERA MAN, I KNOW!

In his fifth at-bat, Davis singled:

Honorary cheesecake
Who's the babe in the white pants sitting behind him? No offense to Davis's swing, but she is the prettiest thing in those clips.
