cantu traded to reds

according to the FOX broadcast crew on the Angels-Tigers Game. He got traded for an unnamed minor league player.

I haven't been able to find a link to this online though, but it is being talked about on the Reds fan forum on mlb.com

I don't think so.

Cantu is not a good 2nd baseman.

if the reds
dealt brandon phillips, id be shocked, what reason would they have?

To get more pitching
I would of traded Phillips to the Mets for Gomez,Humber, and Tejeda.

the reds
have cueto sizzling in the minors, and bailey right there, harang is a stud, and arroyo cant get worse than  he has been already, respect your opinion, just cant see phillips leaving, reds will have very solid pitching before long.

Stop criticizing
his grammar, it's the freaking internet. He has some good points and a fine idea, you're proving nothing by insulting him other than that you have a weirdass vendetta

Are you his mom?
Seriously, you have defended him in like eight straight posts.

Are you his bully?
You and others criticize needlessly for, like, a hundred straight posts.

or
that means people are acting like asses for 8 straight posts ;)

Seriously though,
Can you defend a poor suggestion of trading Phillips for Humber, Gomez, and Tejeda?  What does that accomplish for the Reds?  They get a potential #3-#4, an OF who has incredible athletic ability, but still needs to turn that into baseball skill, and Tejeda?  Seriously?  Why even suggest it?  For what they are paying Phillips and his current production, why would you trade him for mediocre prospects?  Also, with the Reds current glut of OF's and the OF's they have coming up in the minors, what sense would that make?

Maybe it means people are tired of reading posts that make no equivocal sense for the team trading the best player.  Too much speculation is bad, and consistently doing it becomes cumbersome to read.

+1
Yeah, we saw how long it took Phillips to turn his athletic skills into MLB Production. Numerous failures with the Tribe, repeating AAA, etc.. Considering Brandon is still cheap and under club control for a years why dump him for raw unproven players?

great move
he is no hell defensively but put up quite a season before and is cheap. If he can get at-bats and perform he'll be good trade bait for cincy.

Cantu
Looks like they held onto him about 2 extra years for no reason.  They could have really gotten something for him before.
Rios is the next Juan Gonzales, thats right, I said it.

#29
Prospect in BA's 2007 book, just above Desmond Jennings.  :)  Budding power, good speed, good defense, has a problem with strikeouts.  Sounds like a player who could be a top ten prospect in plenty of other systems but given TB's incredible depth sinks down to the low 20s.  Mahalo

He's also 23 heading for 24
He might be slightly too old for AA.

Actually
Cumberland turns 23 on Wednesday, so that comment makes no sense.

Nice...
Krivsky picks up another good "buy low" player.

I hate to see Medlock go because he has pretty good numbers this year, but minor league relievers are definitely more expendable than a 25-year-old with a 115 RBI MLB season under his belt.

Party on Wayne!!!

irony
Maybe Krivsky's learned something in the past year?

Cantu
Has to mean Krivsky's doing his best to get rid of Encarnacion.

by greg456 on Jul 28, 2007 7:25 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Not necessarily,
Cantu can fill a utility spot (1B, 2B, 3B, and PH duties) and provide a solid bat off the bench for now.  Encarnacion still has to be the 3B of the future, he's just too young/talented to give up on just yet.  I think Hatteberg is on his way out, and Cantu will probably get some time there with Votto if he is called up anytime soon.
