Chris Marrero Comps

What kind of comps does Marrero have?

He seems to be an overlooked prospect in some regards.  He's just turned 19(in his first full pro season) and has already been promoted midseason to High A.  Not only has he survived the promotion, but his numbers in many ways have improved.  His BB:K ratio has certainly improved after the promotion from acceptable before to good now.  He's showing good power and batting average along with improving patience.  Have not heard good reports on defense, but it looks like his bat can certainly carry him.  Anyway what are his top comps, and what's his upside comp at this early part of his career?

He has great upside
I read an article from the Washington Post that compare him to a very young Albert Pujols.

which is obviously ridiculous
But Marrero is a fine prospect.  I feel he will always be a bit underrated in prospect circles because he doesn't really have the all around "wow" tools that most top guys have...But he is all around a very good player...

Maybe the next coming of Hunter Pence? Or Billy Butler with better D?

Phillip Hughes turning into Barbaro? Odds are that Hughes will probably be put to sleep within the next year. --Bravesin08

Response
Actually, I prefer to think of Albert Pujols as "an earlier version of Chris Marrerro"

I'd Say...
...Chris Marrero = Paul Konerko

by Brett Keith on Jul 25, 2007 2:58 PM EDT reply actions

Not really, Marrero wasn't a catcher
And what's with the non wow comments.  He has 70 power and his bat is acting like a 70 right now.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 25, 2007 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

What Do You Mean By...
..."Not really"?  They're very similar in size, both are righties, both were drafted in the mid 1st round, both showed plus power and hitting at a young age, and both are limited defensively.  It doesn't matter what Konerko WAS, or what Marrero IS, it matters how they compare based on Konerko NOW and Marrero in the FUTURE.  Besides, Konerko was moved off catcher by age 20.

I Was Referring to the Arm and Speed
Scouts absolutely love guys with plus speed and plus arms, because they are the easiest tools to measure.  In fact, I think guys like that are almost always overrated - because the hit tools are so much more valuable than the others.  What I was getting at is that he may never be a consensus top 5 prospect - much like Billy Butler - because he doesn't play a premium defensive position.  Which, in my opinion is silly if the bat is for real...

Yeah that's a great point
I think Konerko is a pretty good comp for Marrero, but I think he'll be a better fielder as he is adequate in the outfield right now, which will help him translate good to first base a la Pujols.  Marrero like Pujols was drafted as a 3rd baseman and got moved to the outfield for a while before tranferring to 1st base.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 25, 2007 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

Well...
...I've heard that Konerko is a pretty good defensive first baseman.  Granted, that was from Hawk and DJ on White Sox games, but I don't think it's complete hyperbole.

One possible name
Geoff Jenkins (hopefully without the injuries)...

trying to think off others that might fit...

by SLK on Jul 25, 2007 3:43 PM EDT reply actions

well
Dimtri Young in the spring said Marrero's bat was the best he's seen besides his brother's so that is a big complement.

One of my favs
I was pushing for him hard in our community list, and I have already stated that we will look back on the list next year and wonder how we ranked him so low.

by Bowser on Jul 25, 2007 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

I find this funny
we ranked him top 40....

Both Miguel Cabrera and Manny Ramirez started in similar spots on Baseball America's list when they first were in the minors...

   I don't think top 40 was a knock.

Re:
Never said it was a knock - that said, based on his tools, production, and ARL, I think he should have been higher on the list.

by Bowser on Jul 25, 2007 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

another possible name
Carlos Lee....

note I'm trying to go for realtively conservative/normal growth curves...

by SLK on Jul 25, 2007 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

He can't run like Lee
I don't think Marrero has a stolen base this year.  I've heard Pat Burrell but a better version.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 25, 2007 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Burrell
I think that is a good comp at this point.

by Bowser on Jul 25, 2007 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Burrell
is a little more patient than Marrero - both good (BBs) and bad (Ks)

I thought Lee and Jenkins contact and BB rates were more in line with Marrero expectations...

by SLK on Jul 25, 2007 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

now if you want to go pie in the sky comp...
how about Manny Ramirez?

but I think a healthy Geoff Jenkins would be a more reasonable hope...

by SLK on Jul 25, 2007 3:55 PM EDT reply actions

hmmm
Miggy Cabrera is also another Pie in the Sky comp....

marrero comp
he reminds me of gorzelanny with a much better bat

by wily mo on Jul 25, 2007 4:30 PM EDT reply actions

disagree
though the performance isn't there right now, I think Marrero projects to have an easier name to spell. i imagine "pedro guerrero" with fewer letters.

by bleedjaxblue on Jul 25, 2007 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

no, gorzelanny
both are in the 6'2"-6'3" range

by wily mo on Jul 25, 2007 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

using non-metric measurements....
....to perform your comparisons leads to huge inaccuracies. i suggest converting both 6'3" players to centimeters before doing the comp and see if you still think they are similar in height.

also, Gorzelanny didn't reach high-A until he was 21 dog years older. if that's not a significant difference, i don't know what is. (i use dog years because of the humidity in both Washington and Pittsburgh. if either player is to perform well in the summer heat, they will likely have to learn to pant, respirating through their respective tongues. relatedly, Marrero's tongue is 3 centimeters longer, adding to the projectability.)

by bleedjaxblue on Jul 25, 2007 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah
but what do the stats say!

by wildthang on Jul 25, 2007 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

hmmmm
just checked, and it does indeed appear that Marrero has a better bat than Gorzelanny.

good call, wily mo!

ahaha

Marrero = Burrell
Also, the Washington Post and the Nationals broadcasters last night are ridiculously overhyping Marrero already.  Let's see how he handles AA before proclaiming Marrero the next coming of Pujols.  Don't get me wrong, I like Marrero.  Just found it totally hilarious that Don Sutton and the other Nats announcer mistook Marrero being #1 on this week's BA Hot Sheet for being the #1 prospect in baseball.  Both announcers said last night that "Marrero is the #1 prospect in all of baseball."  They have no idea what they're reading or talking about, obviously.

Re: Sutton
Didn't hear that comment where they mistook Marrero being #1 on this week's BA Hot Sheet for being the #1 prospect in baseball. But Sutton is so much better than previous play by play man Ron Darling that I'm more than happy to give him a pass on that one.
sig: Karim Garcia posted dominant AAA stats at 19. So can we stop acting like ARL trumps all in every discussion...
