Any time a pitcher gets 5 ABs
you know he is doing something right.

I was suprised they let him go out for the 9th, he had never gone more than 7 IP before.

eh
92 pitches + a tired bullpen + a 10-0 lead + a chance to get a young pitcher his first CG shutout = no surprise here.

just sad he couldn't get the last out before the damage was done.

in fairness though, he really didn't have his best stuff today, or at least not until late. early on, the Astros were stinging the ball right at people.

one thing i keep noticing with Billingsley, though: you give him a cushion to work with, and he cruises beautifully.

most impressive pitch
he threw a 2 strike change up for a called third strike that completely fooled the left handed hitter. That is the pitch that if he perfects it like he has done with his cut fastball, he's gunna be nasty.

Indians' Overview!
Hello everyone,

Indians (MLB) - lost to the Red Sox 6-2; LHP Jon Lester was solid in his first start back from cancer, though he was also helped out by an Indians' offense that wasn't willing to lay off the high fastball, blowing a golden chance to come back in the 4th.

RF Franklin Gutierrez swung at ball four for the first out with runners on 1st and 2nd; after Shoppach walked to load the bases, Barfield chased after a 1-1 or 2-1 (I believe) high fastball that was hit softly back to the pitchers' mound, where Lester threw to home for the forceout.  Then, Grady on I think something like a 2-2 count, chased a fastball upstairs for strike 3, ending the last best chance for the Indians to come back.  Their offense since early June has not been good - look in the Lester thread for some analysis of how much the Indians' offense has dropped off in June and July.  Meanwhile, RHP Jake Westbrook, like Lee on Saturday, started off very rocky, giving up 4 in the 1st and 1 in the 2nd, then settled in to throw 4 shutout innings, but it was too deep of a hole for the Indians to climb out of.

Grady did hit a 2-run HR for the Indians' only offense, #17.  Victor Martinez did not play tonight, as he got the night off.  RHP Jensen Lewis was solid again, giving up two leadoff hits, but got the next three, including Manny Ramirez on a K; last night, his fastball topped out at 89, but tonight, it topped out at 94.  Either there was a difference in the guns or in how Jensen felt on the mound.

RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka vs. LHP C.C. Sabathia at 7:05 PM Tuesday night; hopefully, CC can get back into his early season form, unlike his last three starts.  The Indians are now 2 games behind the Tigers after they defeated the White Sox 9-6, but the Indians remain 2.5 games up on Seattle after they lost to Texas 8-7.

LHP Matthew Meyer - 2.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 K; 2 G/2 F (4.30 - still must be a little more consistent with his command.)

Potomac:
LF Chris Marrero - 2-4, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI (.323)

hello indians fan
Since you're one of my favorite posters on this site and you follow the indians daily I was hoping you'd shed some light on Hafner.

Seriously, what is up with him? The times I've seen him hitting he just looks out of place, not lost, just off his game. Last year I'd watch him and you almost knew he was going to crush a ball or work a pitcher over in the count, and inevitably he did. That confidence seems to be gone right now.

Any insight into this?

Jack Cust is this year's Marcus Thames

by Team Moneyball on Jul 24, 2007 2:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Hafner
Hafner broke his hand on 9/1/06 ending his season last year.  If you look at Derek Lee this year - he has had a power outage of sorts as well (although he has hit for average).  I am guessing that the hands and wrists are as important to a hitter as a knee is to a running back and they say a RB is usually much closer to old form in year 2 back from an injury.  I wonder if that will be the case for Hafner and Lee?

by slickwdb on Jul 24, 2007 8:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I hope you're right, though Hafner is chasing
more pitches than he ever has in the past 2-3 years; whether that's because he's frustrated he can't drive the ball due to repercussions from that wrist injury or because they were avoiding him with intentional walks earlier in the season, getting him into some bad habits of chasing pitches out of the zone, I'm not sure.

I certainly hope the "old" Hafner comes back soon, preferably this year, and certainly, no later than 2008.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

He just is not the same hitter!
Hello Team Moneyball,

Thank you for the compliment - greatly appreciated!  :-)

I too have wondered the same thing you have, and I keep scratching my head wondering, "What's happened to Hafner/Pronk?"

The wrist injury slickwdb could have something to do with it, but I think it's more the fact he's trying to pull the ball more than in the past, leading to him not reaching pitches on the outside corner, striking out on them.  In addition, he's chasing a lot more pitches than he used to; yes, he still leads the AL in walks, and surprisingly, teams will still intentionally walk him or be careful with him, but in all honesty, he doesn't look anywhere near the same hitter as he did in 2006, or even in earlier years.

Over at LGT several weeks ago, there was an analysis on whether Hafner's stance had changed ever so slightly; according to one expert Ryan and Jay of LGT interviewed, he says that Pronk's stance is slightly more forward (I believe - not sure if I remember the analysis correctly) than it was last year, which could be leading him to hit more groundballs than he has in the past (and he's hitting a ton of groundballs, even on balls that in the past he would crush.  I think his groundball percentage is up over 40%, way over his career average.)

That's partly why his power numbers are down from last year, even though he could still hit 30 and have 100+ RBIs this year, but he is not the feared hitter that several AL teams think he still is - I almost am amused when I see them walk him, thinking, you have to have some reports on what he is doing this year - he is not doing well.

Some of us kid that it was the fact he got married; others of us thought it was the contract situation, and that he would be returning to his old self, now that his contract situation is resolved, but obviously, that hasn't happened yet, even 2 weeks after signing the new contract.

I'd wish he show up soon - the Indians' offense could certainly use him; like most of the Indians last night, Hafner couldn't lay off Lester's high fastball, even though most of those fastballs were clearly out of the strike zone.  That's another difference between the '07 Hafner and the previous Hafner; he's chasing a lot more pitches out of the zone.  Whether the early intentional walks and trying to avoid him caused him to change his approach and try to make something happen by going outside of the zone more often, and now, he can't help himself in doing that, I'm not sure.

I hope this has shed some light on Hafner; I wish I knew exactly what was wrong with him, but it's certainly one of the mysteries surrounding the 2007 Indians to this point.

Hopefully, this is helpful!  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

btw
nice article here on hodges: http://www.timesfreepress.com/absolutenm/templates/sports.aspx?articleid=18159&zoneid=6

it was published on Sat, but he hasn't played since, i don't think.
here's an excerpt:
His performance to date -- 71 hits with 12 doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 39 RBIs -- has the Indians' front office talking about promoting him to the team's AA club in Akron, Ohio.

"It was mentioned during the all-star break," he said. "I'm ready to move but I don't want to rush it. The hitting coach here wants me to stay so he can show me a few more things. If I keep doing halfway decent, I'll probably go toward the end of August.

"I think they're babying me since this is my first year, and I understand that. I'm not in any hurry.

Hodges credited the hitting coach, Jon Nunnally, with his jump in batting average. Nunnally played in the big leagues with Cincinnati, Kansas City, Boston and the New York Mets.

"I had a week where I swung at everything. I broke nine bats," Hodges said. "We had played a 9:30 a.m. game in Frederick, Maryland, and I told Coach Nunnally I had to get more comfortable. We got back to Kinston and worked that night."

Nunnally changed Hodges' stance, pulling his hands back to increase his reaction time, thus improving his timing.

"In college I struggled against somebody with a good slider. I didn't really see it, because my timing was off," Hodges said. "The change has enabled me to be more consistent."

"Wes's swing has been great," said Nunnally, who made the jump to the big leagues from Kinston. "We made a few adjustments where he's thinking down and through the ball rather than up and out, and he's creating line drives, but to have a hitter like Wes makes my job easy.

"The kid is a tremendous athlete. It's up to him to where he goes. He's young but he's going to be in the big leagues in no time. He has the bat. The way he drives the ball the other way, it doesn't come quick for most kids, and he does that tremendously."

Thanks for the article - greatly appreciated! :-)
Hello scooter,

Thanks for the article - greatly appreciated!  :-)  There's some great info. there on Hodges.

Also, Hodges has played since that article was published; here are his results:

Saturday (7-20):  1-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K (.310 - HR #8, 3-run)
Sunday (7-21):  2-5, 2 2B, 3 RBI (.312 - 2B #16 & #17.)

He did not play on Monday (7-22,) but that could have just been a day off for him.  We'll know after tonight for sure.

Again, thanks for the article - greatly appreciated!  :-)

Take care and have a great day!
