7.2.07-Daily Minors Thread

Hey all, I don't normally post this but I decided to take some initiative when I noticed that Jeff Clement is apparently making his ML debut tonight against KC. I hadn't heard or seen anything noting it and I would imagine it is because of the whole Hargrove resigning overshadowing effect.

So yeah, I haven't checked any Minor League boxes yet but that is seemingly significant enought to kickstart this thread.

Thanks for stopping by. And you stay classy. But thanks for stopping by.

Ben Francisco
Don't want to start a new thread, so I'll mention him here.

HR and 2B today for the Tribe.  Now hitting 0.455 with 2 HR in very limited AB.

No mention of him here other than the daily Indians system report.

He seems to be a guy with decent pop and speed, but is a bit old for a prospect  4th outfielder, or is there potential for more?

looks like another Milton Bradley type,
he appears to be a good athlete, moving well in the field and on the bases.  He's got solid talent.  He should, at the least develop into a solid 4th OF and DH filler, but I think he and Martinez will end up platooning in RF, if and when Nixon goes out with another injury.

I think you mean Gutierrez, correct? :-)
Hello JT12340,

I agree with your assessment about Francisco, though I think you meant Franklin Gutierrez when you said Martinez, correct?   :-)

On a poorer team rebuilding, like the Pirates, Royals, or D-Rays, Francisco probably could be a solid corner OFer (he has the range to play CF, but his arm is supposedly on the weaker side, so LF would probably be best for his arm, but his range is good enough to play all three,) but for the Indians, he's right now serving as the 4th-5th OFer, but is getting playing time because Nixon's bat has been erratic and Dellucci is out with the hamstring injury.

Eventually, several think that Francisco could take over Michaels' roster spot down the road, though Francisco actually has hit RHP better than LHP in 2007 (something like .360 vs RHP to .270 vs. LHP at AAA Buffalo if I remember correctly,) so that's why Francisco has been starting against RHP.

In reality, that's actually a good thing for the platoon situations; the breakdowns will probably be like this:

vs. RHP - Francisco and Michaels will probably split the ABs for the LFer (though if Francisco keeps hitting more like he has since being called up, maybe he'll get 2/3 to 3/4 of the starts against RHP.)  Meanwhile, Gutierrez and Nixon will split time for ABs vs. RHP for the RFer.

vs. LHP - Michaels will get most, if not all, of those ABs in LF, since Michaels hits LHP better than RHP (and Francisco is the opposite.)  Gutierrez, conversely, will get most, if not all, of the ABs in RF when a LHP is on the mound because Trot doesn't hit LHP very well, whereas Gutierrez didn't have a major split (at the time I last looked) between RHP and LHP.

So, all in all, Francisco should fit in very well in the platoons as they're set up; in fact, as GregJP mentioned, he had a 2B, a HR, and later, a single to go 3-3, scoring 1 R, and knocking in 2 RBIs.  And he makes a very nice late-inning pinch runner as well (as does Gutierrez, who did pinch-run tonight for Nixon before Francisco's last AB in the 8th.)

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

Thanks for the correction...
I just I didn't realize I wrote Martinez, lol...  Gutierrez is who I meant to write about.

Scherzer
getting lit up so far...looks like we can get his name off the top 50 for a while

3.0    5    4    4    3    1    1

Sarcasm?
Okay, I'll bite: why would one performance - good or bad - affect Scherzer's (or anyone's) prospect status?

If someone thinks Scherzer has the tools to be an elite starter, they should vote for him; conversely, if they aren't high on his future prospects, they should pass.  Tonight's game should have absolutely NO bearing on where he slots on the community list.

by LipstickOnDipstick on Jul 2, 2007 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

wait...
you're upset by the people who said he's a top 25 prospect now? or the people who decided he WASN'T a top 25 prospect because he had a freak injury that stopped his 20-year-old season in triple-A with an OBP above .400?

not that the community prospect list isn't subject to all kinds of fallacies due to recency, but Barton's got to be the worst example of it ever. unless you DO mean the people who decided that Barton "wasn't hitting" when, in fact, he was on the DL.

Check that
In regards to Clement. It seems that it was an error in the sportsline gamecenter (should never trust that damn thing). It looks like KJ is still catching.

So sorry about that. But the Mariners promoting Clement again would actually be believable. It didn't seem that far fetched or out of line.

D'Arby Myers
3-4 with a double and 2 RBI's.  Hitting .357 right now with 5 BB in 14 games this year compared to 7 in 31 last year.

Whoa Nelly!!
Let's see if he can get his SLG over .400 before we start rushing a talented teenager to the next level dude.  When your SLG equals your OBA, you need to develop them a bit more (unless of course both are over 500).  :)  He also is averaging a strikeout a game.  Not good.  Finally, IT'S ONLY 50 ABs!!!!   Mahalo

True
But the majority of Phillies fans like him more than Golson already.  He doesn't fan excessively like Golson 102 K's in 80 games or so this year and is drawing walks 5 in 14 games compared to Golsons weak 18 in those 80 games.  The majority of Myers hits are linedrives or flyballs which will be good in the future.

but Bruce's been K'ing a ton in AA.  He is going to have Brandon Wood problems and won't be ready right away for the majors.  15 K's in 45 AB's.

Alright
I'm trying here, I really am. But after the performances of Rasmus (low average), Bruce (Ks), Maybin (groundballs), and Gordon (average) in just the first 1/2 of the season have virtually eliminated their prospect status in your book, is there any player out there in any league anywhere that has lived up to expectations in your book. Now before you answer, don't forget your mentioning of Upton's struggles the other day.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 2, 2007 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Response
Well, duh, he's not going to be ready right away for the majors.

That being said, the contact issue is basically the big question with Bruce. It's not something new, though - it was apparent last year, and it was apparent while he was raking in the FSL. I'm pretty sure we all knew the guy was going to pile up the strikeouts upon promotion to AA, whether it was this year or next year.

I would hope this helps to bring a significant part of the community to their senses when evaluating Brandon Wood as a prospect . . .

Elvis Andrus
2-3 with a BB and a Two run homer.  He's starting to turn it around now, up to .244 now.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 2, 2007 9:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

3-4 now with a double
Take out his batting average and you realize that Andrus is still quite a good prospect.  22 XBH this year 34 BB and 21 steals in 27 attempts.  In comparison Jose Tabata only has 15 XBH, 26 BB, and only 11 SB and he's an outfielder while Andrus plays a premium defensive position.  Some people overvalue batting average sometimes.

batting average is
important in the minors.

if you cant hit .300 in A+, how are you going to hit in the majors

by bmxstreetrider86 on Jul 2, 2007 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Look at Andrus Road #'s
They crush Tabata's.  Andrus is hitting over .300 on the road with a .420+ slugging.  If he wasn't in such a horrible home park for hitting he would be in the top 30 prospects.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 2, 2007 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Response
Or you could look at his .215/.293/.297 split against righties if you'd like to go the statistical route.

I like Andrus, but the guy's got some work to do with the bat.

by mrkupe on Jul 2, 2007 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

True
But I'd like to see what his road #'s are against righties, I bet they are decent.  I hope he is the next Renteria who also struggled in the minors with the bat too like Andrus.  Renteria never hit .300 in the minors I don't think and now look how good he is.

I love battingsplits.com
It's amazing how bad of luck Andrus has at home.  He has a .240 BABIP at home.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 2, 2007 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Umm...
First off, I think you mean minorleaguesplits.com, since the site you mentioned doesn't exist.  Secondly, if I understood the BABIP/LD% lessons from pedrophile and siddfynch gave me, BABIP should=LD%+12%.  Andrus has a BABIP of .240, meaning his LD% should be 12%, give or take.  His actual LD% is 11.1%, so it's pretty close to what it should be.  Using the above formula, his BABIP should be around .231, so the .240 mark is actually a bit lucky if it's anything other than devoid of luck of any kind.

I saw this
and got a little worried about my recollections.

But I found the article:

http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/if-line-drives-could-speak/

Basically, supporting idea that BABIP is about LD%+.120.

Note that a lot of the "lucky" guys are fast.  I would suspect that these are the fast guys who hit a lot of grounders.  Pehaps, in reality, BABIP for fast guys who hit a lot of grounders should be more than .12 over their LD%.   I don't if Andrus is fast or hits a lot of ground balls, but if he does, maybe his BABIP should be above .24.

Indians' Overview!
Hello everyone,

Indians (MLB) - defeated the D'Rays 10-2 to complete the 4-game sweep, blowing the game open with a 7-run 8th:

RHP Fausto Carmona rebounded from his worst outing of the year against Oakland by having a very solid outing:

W (9-4) - 6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 1 HB; 7 G/3 F; 60 S/37 B (3.78)

He was a bit wild at times tonight, falling behind in the count or going deep into counts, but was able to keep the D'Rays scoreless until the 7th.  In the 7th, Carmona walked one hitter and gave up a hit to another, but the D'Rays scored two runs on an error by Blake on an INF grounder (Blake couldn't come up with it,) then Carmona tried to run the fastball inside on PH Ty Wigginton and hit him with the bases loaded, forcing in the 2nd run.

However, the momentum changed when LHP Rafael Perez came in relief of Carmona in the top of the 7th with the bases loaded and nobody out, as he struck out PH Raul Casanova, got Iwamura to ground back to Perez (he had to make a nice leap off the mound to get to the ball,) who flipped it home for the 2nd out, then got Harris to ground out to Blake.

After that, the offense took over in the bottom of the 8th, scoring 7 times to open up a close 3-2 game.  Francisco had his third hit of the night, a single, to go along with a double, a HR, and a BB, finishing with 3 RBIs (I said in an above reply 2 RBIs, but it was actually 3; sorry about that.)  Sizemore finished off the scoring with his 14th HR off D'Rays closer Al Reyes, his second career grand slam.

Onto the Minors:

AAA Buffalo - defeated Rochester (MIN) 7-4:

1B Ryan Mulhern - 2-4, 1 R, 2 K (.317)
3B Andy Marte - 2-4, 1 GIDP (.254)
RF Brad Snyder - 2-4, 2 R, 1 3B, 2 K (.255)
CF Jonathan Van Every - 2-4, 1 RBI (.339)

RHP Adam Miller - 1.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 K; 1 G/1 F; 33 S/14 B (2.77 - a bit of a rough outing for him in relief.)
RHP Jensen Lewis - S (1) - 1.1 IP, 2 K; 2 F; 11 S/5 B; 0/1 IR scored (0.90 - the 23-YO 3rd-Rd. 2005 pick out of Vanderbilt continues to impress; in 10.0 IP:  4 H/1 R/1 ER/1 HR/2 BB/9 K, 0.50 GO/AO, .118 BAA.)

Rochester:
LF Garrett Jones - 2-3, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 GIDP (.283)
CF Denard Span - 1-3, 1 BB, 2 K (.241)

AA Akron - defeated Erie (DET) 7-5:

CF Trevor Crowe - 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB (.218 - yes, I think something has definitely clicked for Crowe, whatever that might be.  Definitely a good thing to see, for both him and the Indians.)
SS Asdrubal Cabrera - 1-4, 1 R, 1 HBP (.337)
RF Brian Barton - 1-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 3 K (.301 - OUCH on the Ks; he was batting 3rd tonight, which has been usually reserved for 1B/OF Jordan Brown, who was not in the lineup tonight.  Brown is still listed on the Akron roster, however, so he hasn't been promoted yet; I presume it was just a night off for Brown.)
1B Michael Aubrey - 4-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI (.216 - speaking of things clicking, something seems to have clicked for Aubrey as well; another good thing to see for both him and the Indians.  He just needs to stay healthy.)
LF Ryan Goleski - 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB (.261 - also threw out a runner at 3B.)

LHP Reid Santos - W (6-1) - 6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 K, 2 HR (solos); 5 G/8 F (2.09 - another strong start from Santos; although he gave up 2 HRs, they were solos, and the K rate was again impressive.)
RHP Cliff Politte (rehab) - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BK; 1 G/2 F (9.00 - a better outing for Politte.)
RHP Joe Ness - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 2 HR (solo & 2-run); 1 F (6.02 - has good stuff (53 K in 64.1 IP, a 7.42 K/9 IP ratio,) but can't consistently command it, which is leading to his high ERA, high H totals (70 in 64.1 IP) and BB totals (37 BB in 64.1 IP.))

Erie:
2B Michael Hollimon - 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K (.276 - HR #8, 2-run shot off Ness.)
3B Kody Kirtland - 0-4, 2 K (.227 - really struggling of late; batting .111, 4-36, over last 10 G with 4 R, 1 2B, 5 BB, 11 K.)

RHP Jair Jurrjens - L (3-4) - 5.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB (1 IBB,) 4 K, 3 WP; 8 G/4 F (3.63 - did not have great command tonight, as evidenced by the H, BB, and WP rates.)

High-A Kinston - defeated Winston-Salem (CHW) 10-5 in the only CAR League game of the night:

DH Stephen Head - 1-4, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 GIDP (.251)
C Max Ramirez - 3-4, 3 R, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 PB (8) (.315 - his bat is definitely ready for AA.)
3B Wes Hodges - 3-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 GIDP, 1 E (10-fielding) (.330)
LF John Drennen - 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB (.244)
1B Matt Whitney - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 GIDP, 1 E (1-fielding) (.300 - HR #2; early returns from High-A seem to show that he's more prepared to handle High-A this time around than he did last year.)
SS Josh Rodriguez - 2-4, 1 R (.230)

RHP Kevin Dixon - W (6-3) - 6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 1 K; 14 G/3 F (3.79 - a QS and a very good outing by Dixon, despite the high walk total.)
RHP James Deters - 1.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K; 2 G/2 F (2.42 - not great command tonight.)

RHP Kyle McCulloch - L (7-6) - 5.0 IP, 10 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 1 HR (2-run to Whitney,) 1 WP; 10 G/2 F (3.65 - the 1st-Rd. 2006 pick out of Bellaire HS, TX in 98.2 IP:  101 H/40 ER/3 HR/35 BB/70 K, 2.25 GO/AO, .265 BAA.)

Low-A Lake County - defeated Delmarva (BAL) 6-1:

2B Adam Davis - 3-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB (12-2B) (.277 - another Indians' prospect where things seem to have clicked just recently; is batting .417, 15-36, over last 10 G, with 17 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 11 BB, 6 K, 4 SB, 0 CS.)
DH Beau Mills - 1-5 (.227)
LF Nick Weglarz - 1-3, 1 RBI, 2 K (.269)
RF Roman Pena - 1-4, 1 RBI (.259)
3B Dustin Realini - 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B (.235)

RHP Jeanmar Gomez - W (8-6) - 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 HR (solo); 9 G/2 F (5.57 - another solid outing for the 18-YO, 6'3" 168 lb. Venezuelan.)
RHP Scott Sumner - H (3) - 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 WP; 2 G (7.45 - nice K rates over his last few outings.)
RHP Cody Bunkelman - H (3) - 1.0 IP, 2 H; 2 G/1 F (6.93)
RHP Luis Perdomo - 1.0 IP, 2 K; 1 G (3.26)

Delmarva:
1B Brandon Snyder - 3-4 (.266)
3B Billy Rowell - 0-4, 2 K (.256 - really struggling of late; is hitting .176, 6-34, over last 10 G, with 3 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 5 BB, 14 K.)

RHP Pedro Beato - L (3-4) - 6.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K; 6 G/8 F (3.54)

SS-A Mahoning Valley - lost to Auburn (TOR) 4-2:

I should have noted that Carmona's K rate
was quite nice, 8 K in 6 IPs; sorry I didn't mention that before.  :-)

Ottavino
I'm a couple of days late here, but I just wanted to mention Adam Ottavino's last 2 starts for Palm Beach. (Cardinals - high A)

14 IP, 10 H, 0 ER, 12/0 K/BB

21 year old who looks like he might develop into a 3/4 starter for the Cards.
