Sheets to DL - Parra, Balfour up

Manny Parra, welcome to the Show.

Sounds like Sheeter will only miss 2, possibly 3 starts - but either way this makes the 3.5 game lead over the Cubbies even more tenuous.

From all reports, Balfour has been dealing down in AAA - wasn't this guy a big-time prospect once?  Although now at 29, this might be his make-or-break stint.

Thank goodness for the Brewers deep farm system - hopefully Parra can step in and provide some quality bullpen innings.

Gallardo
I don't think the Brewers lose much with Gallardo in the rotation instead of Sheets.

Are you serious??
He's a rookie.  Rarely do they not struggle.  I can't imagine there's not a pretty big drop off from Sheets.  Sheets is one of the best pitchers in the game.

Sheets/Gallardo
Sheets - 3.39 ERA, 1.16 WHIP
Gallardo - 2.83 ERA, 1.05 WHIP

I think at the end of the year these numbers are going to be fairly similar.
He will have a rough start or two, but he's talented  enough to maintain a mid 3's ERA over the course of the year.

Sheets is a no brainer
I have high hopes for Gallardo, both now and in the long term, but his pure stuff isn't in the same ball park as Sheets.

It is really too bad Sheets got hurt when he did, he was starting to get on a big time roll being locked in on the bump.  The Brewers are in a somewhat good position having Gallaro there but there is no question they would rather have Sheets starting. It's too bad both are not in the starting rotation.  Funny how snake bitten Sheets is with freak injuries. He was on such a terrible team the year he was the rightful cy young where he didn't get any attention.  Now with time passing and freak injury after freak injury it is like the 2004 season never happened.

Latest on Sheets injury; before the game today the Brewers anchor crew said Sheets does indeed have a tear and tomorrow he will be getting an ultra sound to determine if it is a complete tear (out for the season most likely) or a partial that in a best case scenario would keep him out about a month.  On Sunday I was standing maybe 15 to 20 feet away from Sheets and he seemed like his "odd ball, joking, fun guy" self so I was hoping he was feeling a lot better but apparently that wasn't the case.

I'm hoping Parra gets in the game tonight.

Stuff
I disagree.  I've watched a fair amount of Gallardo this year and I think his "stuff" is just as good.

Sheets obviously is a better "pitcher" at this point, but I don't think his stuff is particularly overwhelming.

I just can't discount Sheets...
I would agree that Gallardo is very good...having attended his start against the Royals and seeing about every pitch he has ever thrown in the bigs I am pretty impressed.  However, when making a comparison his fb isn't near as fast (Gallardo works mostly in the low 90's, Sheets the past month has been 94 to 97 late) and doesn't explode out of his hand like it does with Sheets and his curve doesn't have near the depth and movement on it yet.  Gallardo's off speed offerings do show a ton of upside and I don't want to sound like I'm ripping on him or down on his stuff.

I'm not trying to discount your opinion but I personally wouldn't put Gallardo in Sheets class yet after being here a month.

Off topic...Chris Young can cover a ton of ground in center.  Hit a first inning Hr too but the ball seems to be carrying really well in Miller tonight.

Balfour
Despite his unfortunate name for a pitcher, Balfour was a really good pitcher for the Twins a few years ago.  He has had some shoulder problems but if healthy he can be really quite good.  I really liked him as a Twin, but he got a major league deal from Cinci instead of going to the Minors to rehab.

Out 4-6 weeks
Looks like Sheets will be out longer than many expected.
