Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

(the good) Chris Young

With 6 innings of 1-run ball tonight, he's lowered his season ERA to 1.97.  Young also allowed his first HR (to Tony Clark) since April- over 80 innings.

I realize he pitches in San Diego (0.82 home ERA), but he's under 3.00 on the road also.  It's not fair to just say he's a product of his park any more as he's holding opposing hitters to a .530 OPS overall.

With his tall frame, Young is now polishing hitters off with a fantastic strikeout rate.  Is there anything we can glean from Young's development that Pittsburgh, Montreal, and Texas all overlooked?

JK about the other Chris Young.  Kinda.

Texas
there is nothing we didn't know before about Texas - they were stupid. A guy like him that put up very good numbers in a very difficult park in his first full year. And they knew the minor numbers were not indicative because they changed his delivery which improved his velocity and downward angle.

Texas was the team that developed him so the other teams were dealing with a different pitcher.

Texas has a very good minor league pitching coach (that reworked Halladay's delivery).

Young's away numbers of 3ERA is basically where I think he will settle in (being about 3.25 in the AL and high 3's or 4 in Texas). A very solid pitcher.

Good feedback
Looking at Young's numbers, it's pretty amazing he's corrected a lot of his HR tendencies of the past.  NO HRs vs. RH batters (200+ ABs), and NO HRs at home.  Period.

He may thrive more than other pitchers in his home ballpark... and he may be having a career year.  But, one can't dismiss how good 2007 has been.

and his progression
has been pretty obvious that I would think it's safe to say he will be a #2 pitcher. This year he's an ace. I'd like to see the HR numbers stay down for a while to be truly convinced that is his level.

I'm guessing he is a very good pitcher having a career year. Not lucky. Just pitching as good as he will ever pitch.

Those HRs...
He gave 1 to Barry Bonds in the first series of the season, then gave 2 in one game to Tony Clark. And tonight, Tony Clark hit the 4th HR this season off Chris Young... Yes, Clark has 3 of the 4 HR off CY this season.

HR
He's given up 136 flyballs, so there is no way he mantains his homerun pace. Still, add another 9-10 HRs and he's having a heck of a season.
