BJ Upton hits a HR for the Durham Bulls,
as does Joel Guzman,
who is putting together a real nice June.
how much hope is there left for him?

and while Andrew McCutchen looks to continue with his month to month improvements, the other Upton is looking to raise his June SLG over .400, which would be quite a disappointment if he doesn't

who are you watching today?

Normally I am not huge fan of soft tossers
like Tyler clippard but I really like Kennedy alot.

Is Kennedy a poormans Mussina
Isn't that who he was compared to coming out of USC last year.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 1, 2007 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, that comparison is frequently made
Except Mussina when he was young threw slightly harder than Kennedy does.  It has been noted that Kennedy's other pitches (specifically changeup) may be better than Mussina's though.

I hear that comparison as well.
Although Kennedy change up is probably better than Moose, it's probably not better than Moose's curve.

Nope
The M's are stubborn and the fact that Guillen is hitting this year is not good for him in the 2nd half.  Watch Bavasi get greedy for pitching and Trade Jones or Balentin.

Weaver
Jeff Weaver seems to have turned his season around making a desperation move for pitching less likely.  On the other hand, maybe Weaver's resurgence makes the M's feel like they have a chance which might make it more likely.  Please God, let it be Wlad or Adam for Matt Morris!

Giants Early Report
Before getting into the minor league highlights, in addition to Tim Lincecum's sensational performance today, Freddie Lewis had a nice day too:  2 for 4, 2B, BB.

Would also like to give props to an old friend who was much discussed on this site back in the day, Chad Billingsly:  7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K.  I can just hear the scrambling to activate him on fantasy rosters right now!

Speaking of......Does anyone else think the Dodgers will be parting with some vets over the winter?

On with the Giants report:

AAA:  Clay Timpner- 2 for 5.  BA= .347.

Dan Ortmeier- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .279.

Justin Knoedler- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(6).  .311/.366/.511.  He's 27 yo, but got a late start because he started his pro career as a pitcher.  With the dearth of good catchers these days, is he turning himself into a prospect?

AA:  Dave McKae- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 1.54.  McKae continues a solid transition to AA.

by DrBGiantsfan on Jul 1, 2007 8:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Ben Snyder
Snyder has yet another solid outing for Augusta:  6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K.  ERA= 2.01.  Snyder definitely needs a promotion.  He's listed as 6'1", 170 lbs on the roster, but the picture in milb.com today makes him look quite a bit bigger than that.

which veterans?
Kent and LoGo's contracts both run out, and I would be surprised if either were re-upped (at least as starters). Furcal is only signed one more year, as is Nomar. And I don't think anyone on earth will take Pierre off their hands.

As for pitching, Tomko and Hendrickson are done. I don't see them parting with Penny or Lowe to the end of their contracts. I imagine they'll offer arbitration Saito once again.

Really, there aren't that many veterans to make a decision on. The only question is whether Colletti will lose his mind and re-sign Kent or else go after some other has-been on the market. But, beyond Pierre, none of the older players are around much longer.

I would HOPE the Dodgers would part ways if any owner would offered a back-rub and a box-of-trinkets-to-be-named-later for either Pierre or Nomar, but I don't think that's going to happen.

On a side note, I had Lincecum and Billingsley BOTH on my bench today, while I pitched Shields, Bonderman and Guthrie. I definitely blew the potentially greatest fantasy day in history, assuming Bonderman can turn in an even half-decent performance.

by bleedjaxblue on Jul 1, 2007 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's About Right
I think I had Nomar, Kent, Gonzo, Tomko and Hendrickson in mind.  That's a pretty major turnover, I'd say.  While pretty much everybody who visits this site would agree that is what needs to be done, I don't expect the average Dodger fan or the LA Press to understand it.  Whether Colletti does is somewhat of a quesion mark.  This will be a test of whether he can shake the old SF affinity for veteran savvy.

I don't play fantasy baseball, but my friend at work kept Lincecum active last start and this start AGAINST my advice.  He sure is smelling like a rose now!

by DrBGiantsfan on Jul 1, 2007 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree
You look at this Dodger team, they have alot of young and exciting young players and need to let some of the old veterens go. The Media and the average fan in any specific team want to keep them because of their savvy or experience. Basically forgetting the fact that signing guys like Kent and Nomar just kills you flexibility.

I had a arguement with my fellow yankee fan (close friend) that the yankees should just let Posada go. Why sign a catcher who's 36 years old, playing over his head to a big deal. Unless it is a 2 year deal, don't resign him.

by NYYLover1000 on Jul 1, 2007 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Posada
Well, I don't know about that.  Who do the Yanks have to take Posada's place?  The thing with the Dodgers is they have a better, or at least good,  young option everywhere you look.  Nomar Garciaparra?  James Loney.  Jeff Kent?  Tony Abreu.  Gonzo?  Kemp.  They just keep coming and coming!

by DrBGiantsfan on Jul 2, 2007 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Posada
About Posada, I think it would be in the Yanks' best interest to DH Posada, and make a real push for Ivan Rodriguez next year.

Kennedy
He doesn't throw hard but he throws harder than Clippard.  Kennedy seems to be consistently in the 89-92 range topping out at about 93-94 once in a while.

Cody Johnson....
Is tearing it up after a poor start last season. So far this year he is batting .340 with 3 HR, 4, 2B, 1 3B in 47 ABs. OPS over 1000. He is a big boy, I think if he can keep his Ks down, I would like him more than Lars. So far only 8 Ks to 5 BB.

by Metty5 on Jul 1, 2007 8:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He's in rookie ball still
If he's doing that in SS soon then i'll be impressed.  I'm more impressed by D'Arby Myers who is hitting over .330 so far.

hmm
desmond jennings now has pretty much an identical batting line as lars anderson, in the same league - both are right around .310/.400/.480 with 7 homers.  except then jennings has 30 stolen bases, a 1:1 K:BB and plays center field.  granted, lars is a year younger.  but this is the full-season debut for both guys.  we might want to take a look at this thing.

+1
I have been trying to follow his stats and was starting to think he is going to start getting A LOT of attention.  I don't know a heck of a lot about him, does he project to have decent power with all of this speed?  Is he on the "raw" side at the plate where one shouldn't expect a promotion this year?

by joltin joe dimaggio on Jul 1, 2007 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

jennings
i'm not sure how he projects, exactly, power-wise.  i know he's a standout athlete in general.  he's listed as 6'2", 180, which is neither small nor large.  he's supposedly raw as a baseball player just because he didn't focuse exclusively on it in his youth, also being a football player and so on.  but at the same time, his numbers don't look like a raw player's numbers at all - he's making great contact, walking as often as he strikes out, and now seems to be starting to drive the ball.

everything i've heard/seen/read points to him having decent power, it's certainly not lacking to a fault, anyways.

i've heard his arm is pretty bad, though

carlos gonzalez
ups the ante by walking twice tonight.  in fact, he had a nicely symmetrical Evening With the Three True Outcomes - two walks, two strikeouts and a homer in five trips.

this marks his sixth straight game with at least one walk, almost doubling his season total.  also worth noting, in his last five games he's gone exactly 1 for 3 each time.

Indians' Overview!
Hello everyone,

Indians (MLB) - defeated the D'Rays 3-2; LHP Cliff Lee outdueled RHP James Shields:

Shields (L 6-4):
6.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 10 K, 1 HR (solo to Peralta,) 1 HB; 6 G/2 F; 77 S/37 B (3.76)

Lee (W 5-4):
8.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 9 K, 1 HR (solo to Pena); 4 G/10 F; 66 S/41 B (4.90)

That was Lee's longest outing since he threw a complete game against LAA on May 10, and his 9 Ks tied a career high (I'm guessing he hasn't struck out that many since 2005 or even 2004, as Lee looked more like the pitcher who won 18 games in 2005 and the pitcher who had a 8.09 K/9 IP in 2004.)

Peralta and Garko each had 2 hits, with Peralta hitting HR #14 (one more than all of last year, and arguably was one of the bigger All-Star snubs, though I understand Young is Texas' only representative, which helped to keep Peralta out of the AS-mix.)  Francisco got his 3rd ML hit in his 2nd ML start, a 7th-inning 2B, that knocked out Shields; he came on to score on a 2-out RBI single by Sizemore.  Also, Travis Hafner was thrown out trying to steal a base (I think it was a botched hit-n-run, actually, though I did not see that actual play, but that's what I gathered from the LGT game thread regarding that sequence.)

The Indians have 3 AS representatives:

LHP C.C Sabathia (not sure if he was picked by Leyland or the players; is vying with RHP Josh Beckett to start the All-Star Game for the ALers.)
C Victor Martinez (picked by AL Manager Jim Leyland; AL reserve.)
CF Grady Sizemore (picked by the players, I believe; AL reserve.)

Onto the Minors:

AAA Buffalo - defeated Rochester (MIN) 8-7 in 10 innings:

LF Joe Inglett - 4-5, 1 R, 2 2B (.270)
DH Ryan Mulhern - 1-5, 1 RBI, 1 K (.315)
3B Andy Marte - 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 GIDP (.246 - outside of the DP, need more games like this from Andy more often.)
RF Brad Snyder - 2-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB (9-2B,) 1 SF (.250 - likewise with Snyder, need more games like this from Brad more often.)
CF Jonathan Van Every - 1-5, 1 RBI, 1 K (.328 - also threw out a runner at HP.)

LHP Jeremy Sowers - 6.2 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 HR (solo,) 1 WP; 12 G/3 F; 68 S/25 B (5.26 - the positives for Sowers included a higher K rate, a high G/F ratio, and a very good S/B ratio; the negatives included giving up too many Hs and Rs - he needs to keep those positives going and reduce the negatives some more; the control was good, but the command still needs to be better.)
RHP Bubbie Buzachero - 1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 K; 1 G/3 F; 21 S/5 B (4.00)
LHP Juan Lara - W (2-2) - 1.2 IP, 1 H, 2 K, 1 WP; 1 G/2 F; 14 S/5 B (5.05 - command has been more consistent of late, leading to more consistently good results of late.)

Rochester:
2B Alexi Casilla - 1-5, 1 R (.284)
RF Garrett Jones - 1-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 4 RBI, 1 SF (.279)
DH Ken Harvey - 1-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K (.167)

AA Akron - defeated Erie (DET) 13-11:

CF Trevor Crowe - 2-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 1 PO (1B) (.214 - HR #2 - 3-run; it took a while, but I'm getting the feeling that the '06 Crowe has finally arrived at AA in 2007.)
SS Asdrubal Cabrera - 3-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB (.338)
1B Jordan Brown - 0-4, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 GIDP (.321)
RF Brian Barton - 1-3, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP (.303 - I believe he still leads all the Minor Leagues in the number of HBPs.)
DH Michael Aubrey - 2-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K (.174 - speaking of finding oneself again, it seems Aubrey has as well.  Now, the key is for him to remain healthy.)
C Chris Gimenez - 1-4, 2 R, 1 RBI (.308 - allowed 1 SB to a guy who was 14/18 in steals before his 15th SB, but also threw out a runner who was 11/15 in steals before being thrown out for his 5th CS.)

RHP Jake Dittler - 5.1 IP, 11 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HR (solo); 8 G/3 F (4.54 - big UGH!  He had been doing quite well at AA this season, but not in this start, as he was too hittable.  His control was solid enough and he got many GOs, but too many were over the heart of the plate.)
RHP Jeff Stevens - H (3) - 2.0 IP, 4 K; 1 G/1 F (3.00 - the 23-YO PTBNL in the Brandon Phillips deal continues to impress; in 21.0 IP:  15 H/7 ER/1 HR/6 BB/28 K, 3.00 ERA.)
RHP Joe Ness - 0.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB; 1 G (5.68 - Closer Randy Newsom allowed the 2 IR to score, but Ness put him in that situation, as his command was erratic again.)

Erie:
2B Michael Hollimon - 1-5, 2 RBI, 2 K (.276)
3B Kody Kirtland - 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 K (.230)

RHP Dallas Trahern - 6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HB, 1 PO (Crowe at 1B); 6 G/8 F (3.53)

High-A Kinston - defeated Winston-Salem (CHW) 8-3:

RF Stephen Head - 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB (3-2B,) 1 HBP (.251)
C Max Ramirez - 1-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K (.307)
3B Wes Hodges - 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 E (9-fielding) (.324)
CF John Drennen - 0-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K (.244 - batting .108, 4-37, over last 10 G.)
1B Matt Whitney - 2-5, 2 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 K (.250 - first High-A HR of the season in 16 ABs - 3-run; hit just 10 in 345 ABs at High-A all of last season.)
SS Josh Rodriguez - 1-5, 1 RBI, 1 K (.228)

LHP Ryan Edell - W (8-3) - 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K; 4 G/9 F (3.27 - another solid outing for the soon-to-be (July 6) 24-YO 8th-Rd. 2005 pick out of the College of Charleston.)
LHP Matthew Meyer - 0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 WP; 1 F; 1/1 IR scored (4.26 - command was way off today.)
RHP Erik Stiller - 2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 K; 3 G/4 F; 0/2 IR scored (0.84 - the soon-to-be (July 10) 23-YO UFA from the 2006 Draft from Princeton University continues to impress; in 21.1 IP: 15 H/2 ER/1 HR/4 BB/17 K, 0.74 GO/AO, .192 BAA.)

Low-A Lake County - lost to Delmarva (BAL) 7-6:

1B Beau Mills - 1-5, 1 R, 1 K, 1 E (3-throw) (.235 - Adam Davis played 3B today.)
C Matt McBride - 3-5, 1 RBI (.298)
LF Nick Weglarz - 1-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K (.268)
DH Cirilo Cumberbatch - 0-3, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K (.300 - batting .257, 9-35, over last 10 G, but has a 7 BB/6 K ratio over that same span, along with 2 2B and 2 SB.)
RF Roman Pena - 3-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 K (.258 - broke a 1-20 slump over last 5 G, but is still hitting just .200, 9-45, over last 11 G, with 2 BB/14 K.)

RHP Josh Tomlin - L (7-1) - 5.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 HB; 5 G/4 F (3.32 - wasn't as sharp today with his command, plus the fact that there was poor defense and Creps allowed both IR to score led to his first loss on the season.)
RHP Austin Creps - BS (2) - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 K; 2 G, 1 E (2-pickoff (4.32 - poor defense by him and behind him led to the blown save.
RHP Matthew Robinson - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 1 WP; 1 F (7.45)
RHP Luis Perdomo - 1.0 IP, 1 K; 1 G/1 F (3.35)

Delmarva:
1B Brandon Snyder - 2-3, 3 R, 1 BB (.259)
3B Billy Rowell - 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K (.264)

RHP Timothy Bascom - 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HR (solo to Denham); 5 G/5 F (0.90 - in 2 GS, 10.0 IP:  3 H/1 ER/1 HR/2 BB/14 K, 0.90 ERA for the 22-YO, 6'1" 205 lb. 4th-Rd. 2007 pick out of Bradenton (South Coast) FL.)
RHP Luis Lebron - H (1) - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K; 1 G (6.18 - the 22-YO Dominican in 26.2 IP:  23 H/18 ER/1 HR/30 BB/38 K, 1.05 GO/AO, .240 BAA.)

SS-A Mahoning Valley - lost to Auburn (TOR) 6-4:

2B Jansy Infante - 2-5, 1 R (.385)
C Alex Castillo - 2-5, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K (.333)
1B Todd Martin - 1-5, 2 K (.364)
RF Matt Brown - 0-2, 1 R, 2 BB (.289)
DH Justin Jenkins - 3-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI (.241)
SS Mark Thompson - 1-2, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP (.139)

LHP Ryan Miller - L (0-2) - 0.1 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 1 HR (3-run); 1 G (18.69 - had poor command again; so far for the 20-YO 6'0" 195 lb. 36th-Rd. 2006 pick out of Blinn College, TX, in 4.1 IP:  9 H/9 ER/1 HR/8 BB/3 K, 2.67 GO/AO, .409 BAA.)
LHP Jimmy Brettl - 2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K; 2 G/3 F; 1/3 IR scored (3.24 - 39th-Rd. 2006 pick out of Cal State Northridge.)
RHP Daniel Morales - 3.0 IP, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 WP; 2 G/5 F (0.00 - the 14th-Rd. 2007 6'3" 230 lb. pick out of SF in 3 G, 6.2 IP: 4 H/0 ER/0 HR/2 BB/6 K, 0.56 GO/AO, .182 BAA.)
LHP Brett Carlin - 2.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 K, 1 HB; 2 G/1 F (1.13 - 30th-Rd. 2006 5'11" 180 lb. pick out of Fullerton JC, CA, concluded a very solid day of relief work for the MV bullpen.)

Rookie-Level GCL Indians - off today!

Take care and have a great day!
