Tim Lincecum!

Timmy struck out 9 of the first 12 Arizona batters today, and now has allowed 2 hits and 0 BB through 5 innings with those same 9 Ks.

Tim Lincecum
is god.

Seriously though, this isn't that much of a surprise from him.  Looking at his stats his K rates have been outstanding, I think the criticism he has received on this site for his MLB performance was pretty unwarranted.

Bonds just hit a 2 RBI Double
He is hitting .306 with an OBP over .515 and a slugging percentage over .600

He is actually underrated now.  On ESPN (which should be expected I guess) they were saying he is only going to make the All Star game because the Giants don't have any other candidates, not because he actually deserved it.  I know what they mean 515+ OBPs and 1.128 OPSs don't deserve to be in the All Star game.

oswalt got snubbed
Fuentes made the squad which is a joke.  Guess Larussa needs his lefty specialist.

Oswalt is having a bad year by his standards...
The guy is walking a lot of people in comparison to past years.  He's also not getting the best run support which plays into his wins.

He isn't as deserving as some of the other NL starters.

RIght.
"I think the criticism he has received on this site for his MLB performance was pretty unwarranted."

Is that sarcasm? The guy seems to be worshiped by most folks around here and any negatives associated with the pitcher - such as his inconsistent control - are routinely ignored.

by FI on Jul 1, 2007 5:57 PM EDT reply actions

No, it wasn't sarcasm
He has seriously received some critics and doubters on this site since his call to the majors.  Every time he struggled in a start there was a "What's wrong with Tim Lincecum?" post.  I thought those were ludicrous and severe overreactions.

Update:  7 IP 3 hits 0 runs 0 BB 12 K

well
let's wait and see if he can be consistent with the control and the changeup

A possible explanation
Last Friday I think it was that the non-Baseball Prospectus Joe Sheehan posted the question at www.baseballanalysts.com as to why pitchers had good starts and bad ones.  Was it, he asked, bad stuff, bad location -- or bad luck?

He looked at Roy Halladay's good starts and bad ones this year and found that the movement on Roy's pitches was similar in both situations and that the location was also similar.  That led him to conclude that it was likely mostly bad luck.

I think Tim Lincecum ran into some bad luck six starts back when he came out with a five-run lead and immediately gave up three hits on four pitches.  I think that upon being hard hit for pretty much his first time EVER, he (visibly) wondered how the heck this could be happening.

I believe his response was to begin overthrowing, which then caused him to lose his control.  (He had issued only seven walks in his five previous starts.)  He began receiving advice from all quarters.

Finally in his June 25th start against San Diego -- a start in which he saved his being temporarily removed from the rotation from what turned out to be the best start of his major-league career -- Tim said he just decided to do it HIS way.

From his grave, Frank Sinatra applauded, and Padres hitters mostly waved, gathering only four hits in seven innings while strikout out eight times.

Then yesterday Tim put it all together, pitching they way I am USED to seeing him pitch.  Striking out 12 while walking none (66 strikes on 97 pitches), Tim allowed only three hits in seven innings.  One of the hits was of the broken-bat variety.  Another was a popup lost in the sun for a double.

Tim's start reminded me of his final start at Fresno near the end of April.  In that game, Tim also yielded three hits and walked none, striking out 14 batters in six innings.

Yesterday Tim picked up three strikeouts with his change, four with his curve ball and five with the heater, which Padres hitters six days before had described as "rising" according to Giants color man Mike Krukow.  Krukow described Lincecum's change up and curve yesterday as "unhittable."

It may be important to note that even while Lincecum was being beaten up in the last two (13 earned runs) of his four straight tough outings, he struck out 12 batters in 7 2/3 innings during that time.  He had terrible control and perhaps a bit of bad luck -- but he never truly lost his stuff.

Now Tim has pitched 16 1/3 straight scoreless innings, yielding just eight hits and four walks, while striking out 23 batters.

IMO we are beginning to see the real Tim Lincecum.  And for Giants fans with precious little else to cheer about, it's truly a lot of fun.

What's wrong with being God-like when you're on?

what's wrong is
looking like a HS pitcher when you are off.

Which leaves what
a demi-god in the middle? Is there anything wrong with that? it's all bout the composites

It was the Diamondbacks
We already knew he could dominate AAA lineups.

(Not that I don't think he'll figure out ML hitters and contend for quite a few Cy Youngs.)

Baby steps, I guess.

timmy
he had three pitches REALLY working well today. great explosive fastball with a lot of movement. he was able to dial it up to at least 97 when he had to. then his changeup was nasty and had movement. he capped it off with a devastating breaking ball which he was able to command. the thing that i am most proud of was the fact that his command was on today.

Lincecum
I was at the game today, and Timmy's stuff looked nasty. There were so many swing-throughs, on the fastball and the offspeed pitches. Some of the Diamondback hitters really seemed overmatched.

Here's a lovely story....
As of Sunday night, the Giants were going to skip one of Lincecum's starts this week. I had six other two start candidates and I NEED to have relivers in their (it's Roto), so I beched him. Hmmmm. 14 IP, 7 H, 4 BB, O R, 20 K 1 W....ON MY BENCH!!!! The reliver I started in his place, 2 IP, 4 H, 0 BB, 1 ER, 3 K, 1 HD. I had a chance to K 100 this week, which has never been done in my league. With Lincecum, I'm already there. Instead I need Bonderman to K 10 tonight.

by rwperu34 on Jul 1, 2007 7:31 PM EDT reply actions

i had him benched also
because they said his 2nd start would likely be skipped, but i learned a valuable lesson, lincecum is always in there now.

didnt
the giants switch his battery mate to Molina, i think they had alfonzo or somebody else when he went through his little funk

by SoCalSoxFan on Jul 2, 2007 1:25 PM EDT reply actions

Guillermo Rodriguez
Rookie Guillermo Rodriguez caught Tim in two straight poor starts.  Rodriguez was familiar with Tim, having caught four of Tim's five starts at Fresno.  But with a totally rookie battery, the Giants had little experience at play.

Rodriguez caught the first game to give Bengie Molina a rest, then was forced to catch the second time because Molina had been hit on the throwing hand with a foul tip the night before.

by sharksrog on Jul 2, 2007 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

What the Giants failed to realize
was that Timmy could have been pitching to one of those net bounceback things at AAA and he would've had the same results.

Veteran MLB lineups are just a little bit better than AAA...
