Royals: Post Draft Thoughts

I led the Royals mock draft through the first three rounds, then handed the reigns off to adschofield for the final two.  Overall, I thought we had a tremendous draft, as we picked up a handful of premium high-ceiling arms to go along with our surprise 1st round pick, the polished catcher Matt Wieters.

1st round: Matt Wieters, C, Georgia Tech

I went back and forth on the decision between Wieters and Rick Porcello, and in the end I decided to play it safe with Wieters.  I have no doubt that Wieters will be at the very least a league average catcher in the show, with the potential to be a perennial All-Star.  Porcello was tempting, but overall I feel this draft class was loaded with high-ceiling prep arms and I thought I could pick up some nice talents later on.

2nd round: Nick Tepesch, RHP, MO HS

I ended up going with the local boy at the 66th pick with Nick Tepesch out of Blue Springs, MO.  He is your power righty with a projectable frame and has shown a great fastball/curve combo.  He has reached the mid 90's, and I believe the velocity will gain a few ticks as he matures.  While I like the pick, Tepesch was roughly my 4th or 5th choice at this spot, and I was really counting on Dan Duffy or Neil Ramirez being available.

3rd round: Julian Sampson, RHP, Wash HS

Sampson was my #1 target for this spot, and I actually gave consideration to taking him a round earlier for fear that he wouldn't be here.  I absolutely love this guy as a prospect and feel he is underrated.  Long, projectable frame, loose arm action, low 90's gas that should improve in time, and a great feel for his breaking stuff.  I feel his potential is throught the roof.

4th round: Kevin Rhoderick, RHP, Ariz HS

This is when adschofield took over, and I was pleased when I saw this pick.  Rhoderick is another power arm to add to our farm system, but his stock is lower than his stuff warrants due to the bias against short pitchers (Rhoderick is 6 feet tall).  Excellent arm action, low/mid 90's velocity, good feel for his secondary stuff.  Hopefully adschofield can share his thoughts on Rhoderick later on.

5th round: Drake Britton, LHP, Texas HS

Another great pick by adschofield, and Britton filled the southpaw void in our draft.  Britton is another underrated prospect that isn't getting the love he deserves due to BA not placing him in their top 200.  Britton mixes a heavy, low 90's fastball with a nasty curve and was impressive during a showcase run last summer.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, I think we did a tremendous job of achieving our main priority, which was injecting the farm system with elite, high-ceiling talent.  Wieters should fly through the system, while the four HS pitchers will be able to take their time and develop properly to aid in achieving their true potential.  The focus on upside players is a high-risk proposition, but it is what a small-market franchise needs to do in order to find a few diamonds.

Thoughts?

I like this alot...
they get the big time college hitter again, and go after hard throwing, high upside preps.

Nothing wrong with drafting like that. I especially like the Britton pick.

Porcello
I just heard he is looking for a 8m bonus....if that is true(and I hate to say this) we need to look at Wieters....
Frank Tanana is my all time favorite player and he was a member of VTTigers beloved team....my tribute to VTTigers

Just Posturing
Porcello won't get an 8 mill bonus from anyone, including the Royals.

I have no doubt Boras will wait until the 11th hour to sign, but he will eventually sign because it would be a dumb gamble to go to UNC for 3 years rather than take the money now, considering how quickly pitchers can fall off the mpa.

Did anyone see the Keith Law thing today?
I don't have insider ... so can only see what is shwon ... but it noted how Milwaukee might be looking at Wieters - which seems to imply that Wieters might fall there - something about Boras looking for 10 million.

If anyone has any more information, that would be intriguing.

If Porcello and Weiters demand too much
Who would be #2?  Moustakas? Detweiler? Aumont? Parker?

I know you're supposed to pick BPA early on...
But I just cannot see KC taking Wieters.  I don't see Moore wanting to pay him.  And if Porcello is wanting similar money, I can easily see KC going after Jarrod Parker or Ross Detweiler.  Moustakas might be a fairly easy sign, but he's also likely to stick at 3B long-term, which is a position already filled by Mr. Gordon.  And it's not like he looks to be significantly better than any of the other options available.

Dayton Moore
The Royals organization has said all along that they are willing to shell out the money for their draft pick.

Parker and Moustakas
I would be fine with Parker if they can sign him asap, his stuff is just as good or better than Porcello and i've heard he comps as a RH Kazmir.

I doubt Moustakas would be a quick or easy sign, he is also represented by Boras.  I expect Boras will wait until the deadline gets close before making any deals.

My thoughts
In the fourth, Rhoderick was really the obvious choice for me, but I gave some consideration to Tommy Toledo and Sammy Solis.  I really like Rhoderick because he's got a good fastball, a nasty slider, and a developing changeup.  Hopefully, he'll grow a couple of inches, but he's still got a sturdy, strong frame.

In the fifth, I gave some consideration to Sammy Solis, and some other guys, but eventually went with Drake Britton.  He's a little taller than Rhoderick, and he's a got a strong, well-built frame.  I loved the fact that he had a good fastball and a nasty curve.  I think he'll be able to develop a two-seam fastball and a changeup, and he'll probably grow a little bit more.

I also liked the Julian Sampson and the Matt Wieters, but I'm not a big Tepesch fan.  I like Tepesch's frame and velocity, but his secondary offerings aren't spectacular.  I think we could've of got Tepesch a bit later, maybe even in the fourth.

man
I would really hate it if the Royals didn't pick up one of Wieters or Porcello with the second pick.  Top 50 prospects right out of the box don't just fall into your lap...you have to earn them with ridiculously bad seasons.  It would be a shame if another pitiful Royals year went to waste.

I'd love it
If our actual draft turned out like this, and I think eazy's draft strategy was a good one: a premium bat (and as close to a sure thing as there is in this draft), and tons of power arms.  Since there's no such thing as a pitching prospect, it's excellent that we took as many arms as we could...hopefully, some will stick.

In the real draft, I'd be happy with Weiters/Porcello, and of course I'd be ecstatic if Price somehow fell to us.  Not going to happen, but it'd be awesome if it did.

Good work to all those involved with the mock draft; let's hope the real one goes as well as this one did.

there's a decent amount here if memory serves me correctly.  That said, i slowly have had less and less time to follow baseball ... so i'm awful behind on things these days.

Good draft...
Personally I might have substituted one underrated college pitcher for one of the prep guys to stagger the influx of talent a bit and possibly looked at a middle infielder too, since KC is also desperately thin there aside from the oft injured Bianchi.  Having said that, I don't mind taking all of these high ceiling HS arms to help build the system up.  If nothing else, they can be pawned off later when the Royals finally get a good pitching staff (I can dream can't I?).

Yep very nice draft.
Got a damn good bat along with some high ceiling prep arms. I'd be ecstatic if the real draft is something similar to this.
