Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Is it too early to call Drew Stubbs a bust?

The guy is a 22 yo college hitter putting up a line of .243/.338/.351 at low A ball.  The fact that he was described as a gold glove defender doesn't mean much with that line.  Throw in the 71 Ks in 61 games and I don't have much hope as a Reds fan. The fact that 4 of the next 6 picks were Rowell, Lincecum, Scherzer and Snider just makes it worse.  I was not a fan of the pick at the time but now I just outright hate it.

I've seen enough. He's a bust.

The guy is playing with serious turf toe
He probably needs surgery  after the season to correct it. He will be 22 all season. So I voted that it was way too early to call him a bust.

That changes my opinion a little bit
Although if it would really make that big of difference in his performance, they should have shut him down already and tried to get him ready to play in the AFL or one of the winter leagues.  He's not getting any better by doing what he's doing.

turf toe
did he have turf toe last year when he hit .252/.368/.400 with 64 strikeouts in 210 at bats in the rookie level pioneer league?  maybe he just can't hit.  i said it when the pick was made that he reminded me a lot of tyler greene and he has done nothing in his pro career to show me any different.

No, he didnt.
He was playing through other injuries last year, but turf toe was not one of them.

turf toe can be fatal. stubbs is done. i wouldn't be surprised if he turns into the next barbaro.

hes not a bust
but the pick was questionable anyways. I was never a believer in Stubbs and it does seem that his inability to make contact in college should have outweighed his "tools" and lower his draft status.

Stubbs
This really wasn't all that unpredictable with Stubbs.

I'm not an advocate of taking toolsy college outfielders that have mediocre production and contact issues in the early first round. If you've played several years of college ball and are still striking out 25% of your atbats by your Junior year that's a very bad sign.

There really isn't a shortage of toolsy kids who can play OF but need plenty of development with the bat. Take a bunch of 'em between rounds 3 and 8 and you could have a few success stories like a Cedric Hunter or a Chris B. Young. But at the top of the draft don't draft an athletic outfielder with a questionable bat. Take a legit bat or high ceiling arm. Hell, the Reds could have had Rowell, Lincecum, Snider, Marrero, Antonelli, etc..

sig: Karim Garcia posted dominant AAA stats at 19. So can we stop acting like ARL trumps all in every discussion...

speaking of him - to this day i wonder what ambiorix rhine could have done with one honest shot in the big leagues.

So true.
A real shame about Rhine, but where would Francisco "the Purse" Seine be now if it wasn't for that horrific injury?   What could have been, y'know?

And lest we forget, before there was Jonathan "the Ox" Broxton, there was converted catcher Brad "The Ox" Oxus.   Wonder whatever happened to him.

Pawelek
talk about a "bust" and Pawelek's name can't be too far off.  Check this out -- he fell on a late night excursion over his Playstation and fractured his elbow.  Luckily it was his non-throwing elbow.  But that dude has not done a thing since signing.

pawelek
he was pretty lights out in the AZL after signing, but he has been very disappointing
