Short Season Daily Diary

I would like to make a proposal to the group:  Lets pool our Short Season A ball and Rookie ball information in a handy-dandy daily thread.

I don't know about you, but short season leagues always get me confused; with all the new players and so many of these guys are mostly unknown it can be tough to follow them all.  I'm sure the thread will not only allow us to share our hidden gem prospects with others as geeked up about them as we are, but also to follow small trends that take place in these leagues and possible breakout candidates.

First post ideas:
-Guys who have done well in the new leagues so far.
-Players who skyrocketed last year due to great short season league performances. (who are doing well this year/who are stinking this year)
Players you hope to more of due to a great performance in college but a low draft ranking.
High school kids who you expect to do well this year in SS even against more experienced players and guys straight out of college.

Players who did well:
First start for Colton Willems, he got knocked around a bit but only allowed 2 runs with 5 k's over 5  IP, and only 2 walks.  Decent start out of the gate.

Esmailyn Gonzalez: this kid must be intimidating.  3 walks, 2 runs scored with no official at bats.

I love the idea, as these leagues fascinate me for some reason.

P.S. It seems to me that hitting well in SS leagues is not that great an accomplishment.  The good SS league hitters seem to almost always make it to AA or AAA, but usually only the ones the scouts are raving about make the majors.  But the one thing to watch for is extremely low SO totals as these players may be able to keep making contact as they move up the ladder.

Villalona makes debut today.
So far batting 0-2 in the third spot.  He's made an error, but also helped turn a double play.

0-3
So far, a pop fly, flyout, and groundout.

Hat trick?
Is that some sort of reverse hat trick?

How about this.
Made an error on his first chance.  Started a double play his next chance.

2 for 5
With a double.  AZL Giants bats came alive in the late innings.

Craig Whitaker makes a 1 inning appearance- rehab.

More Giants
AZL Giants crushed the A's 13-2, breaking open a close game in the late innings.

This team has a lot of returning players, rehab players and college draftees so it may overmatch the rest of the AZL, but they did put at least 6 players under age 20 on the field today.

Nick Noonan, 2007 supplemental round draft pick #32:  1 for 2, 3B, BB.

Charlie Culberson 2007 pick #51:  1 for 2, 3B.

Angel Villalona:  2 for 6, 2B.  0 K's.

Dom Duggan:  2 for 4, 2 2B, SB.  College draftee.  Was a good hitter for a good program, Coastal Carolina in college.  He shouldn't hang around Arizona too long.

Eddy Martinez-Esteve:  2 for 3, BB.  Rehab assignment.

Matt Klimas:  2 for 4.  19 yo catcher drafted last summer out of JC.  Hit very well in his pro debut, then disappeared after 20 games.  I had read somewhere that he was no longer in the organization.  Another kid who shouldn't hang around Arizona too long.

Bucardo:  3.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K.  19 yo RHP from Nicaragua.  Graduate of the Dominican Academy and DSL.  Not a great  line, but at 19, who knows?  Could be the next Henry Sosa?

Nick Carr
Mets NYPL

Nicholas Carr - 6 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 10 K

Ground outs-fly outs: 8-0

Anyone have a scouting report?
