Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

6/19 minors thread

Short-season and rookie league opening day, but a lot of the high draft picks haven't signed yet so there aren't many interesting guys.  however, one interesting guy opened up the season in a big way.

Cody Johnson hits a homer in his first at bat on the season for Danville of the Appy league.  What are your thoughts on what he can do this year and in the future?

Went 4-6 with a 2B, HR, and BB in a double header today.  Average back up to .290.

not minors1
but lincecum is getting shelled by the brewers. i watched the 2nd inning and like 6 batted balls were line drives.

I think i'm going to cut him off my fantasy team
he's been bad the last few starts and i already have Beckett, Sheilds, Bonderman, and Peavy.

D'Arby Myers
1-2 with 2 RBI's in a suspended game right now.  I love his future potential, if he can put it all together.  Great speed and has some pop.

Albuquerque
Here's a name for you!  Now pitching for Boise against Salem-Keizer in the NWL opener, Alberto J. Albuquerque!  He ran up a 7+ ERA in the midwest league this year and apparently got demoted.  He's rung up 4 K's in 2 IP so far tonight.

Outstanding!
Maybe at Christmas he gets visited by Santa J. Santa Fe.

hochevar vs reynolds
Hochevar: 6 IP, 4 hits, 1 run (unearned, wichita defense sucks), 5 K
Reynolds: 5 IP, 2 hits, no runs, 1 walk, 1 K (done)

Looks like Hooch rose to the occasion.  Who ended up winning this game?

Nevermind
looks like it was suspended in the 12th due to lightning.  Nice to see Hochevar come through with a great performance.

#17
Adam Jones wastes no time in continuing his HR assault as he hits #17 in the 1st inning.

CAL League All-Stars
Lake Elsinore dominates the Cal League all-star team.  Antonelli, Blanks, Huffman and Freeze all in the starting lineup with Wade LeBlanc as the SP.

Bailey
very good outing

7 IP 93 pitches 3 K

only 1 ER, with 2 H and 4 BB

The walks are high, but if you can only give up 2 hits in 7 innings, 4 walks isn't that bad.

Joel Guzman is ALIVE!!!
Homered for the 3rd straight game tonight.

Also, Brandon Wood with #10 tonight.

still
he is only 22 in AAA.  Don't count him out yet..  But I was wrong it was only his second straight game with a HR.

Indians' Overview!
Hello everyone,

Indians lost to the Phillies 9-6; the Indians' bullpen (specifically Aaron Fultz and Roberto Hernandez) let them down, as the Indians may have won this game if those two had done their jobs.  The rumor is is that Hernandez could be on his way out; it's been reported that RHP Jake Westbrook will start in Washington on Sunday, which means someone has to go.

That guy could be LHP Jason Stanford, and he's out of options, but I hope not; his line tonight wasn't great, but 2 of those ERs were allowed in by Fultz:

Stanford - L (1-1):
6.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR (solo to Howard,) 2 HB; 8 G/9 F; 71 S/24 B (4.97)

Garko hit a solo shot (his 9th) for the Indians, breaking a 2-41 slump.  David Dellucci, trying to beat out a relay throw to 1B in an attempt at a DP (which he succeeded on,) popped his left hamstring and will be put on the DL - don't know how severe the injury is, but by the looks of it, I'd say at least a few weeks.  This could open up an opportunity for either AAA Buffalo OF Ben Francisco (.329/.390/.479) or 3B Andy Marte (.265/.318/.541) to come up from Buffalo - either Francisco can take over in LF and platoon with Michaels (even though Francisco is a RH hitter, he has hit RHP much better at AAA Buffalo than LHP (.367/.427/.557 vs. RHP compared to .256/.315/.329 vs. LHP) OR bring up Marte and have him play 3B, allowing Blake to shift to either RF or LF (depending on whether Trot can and is willing to move to LF, but probably Blake would play in LF, even though he's the better OF defender of the two now.)  It will be interesting to see what happens.

Onto the Minors:

AAA Buffalo - their game with Louisville (CIN) was rained out; it will be made up as part of a DH on Wednesday, beginning at 5:35 PM.

AA Akron - defeated Trenton (NYY) 4-3:

SS Asdrubal Cabrera - 2-5, 2 R, 1 3B, 1 K, 1 E (8-fielding) (.323)
LF Jordan Brown - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB (IBB) (.324 - his 1B/LF versatility is a nice asset to have; should make it easier for him to move to AAA Buffalo, which will probably happen in the near future at this rate.)
RF Brian Barton - 2-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HBP (.312 - still might lead in most HBPs in the Minors; BA even called him the new "Carlos Quentin" in terms of his ability to get HBP.)
1B Michael Aubrey - 3-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI (.208 - if he could just stay healthy; nice to see him have a good night AND play 1B!)

DH Ryan Goleski - 0-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB (.256)
CF Trevor Crowe - 0-4, 1 K (.193 - don't tell me he's not going to reach .200 again?!)

LHP Shawn Nottingham - 3.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 2 HR (both solo); 5 G/2 F (4.54 - has gone 3 IP or less in 3/4 starts after going 6+ IP in 6 previous starts before that.)
RHP Joe Ness - 4.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K; 9 F (5.53 - has good stuff, but can he harness it?)

Trenton:
RHP Jeff Marquez - 5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 1 HB; 5 G/7 F (2.70)

High-A Kinston - playing in the High-A ASG between the Carolina and California Leagues; the game is in progress (started at 10:30 PM EDT, 7:30 PM PDT,) and the CAL AS lead the CAR AS 10-4 in the top of the 7th:

Kinston Indians AS:
C Max Ramirez (AS starter - batting 3rd in the order):  0-2, 1 K
PH Chris Gimenez (AS reserve - pinch-hit for the 4th hitter in the order in the top of the 6th) - 0-1, 1 K

RHP Frank Herrmann - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER; 3 G; 16 S/7 B (9.00)

Low-A Lake County - playing in the North-South SAL All-Star Game - the North AS (LC part of that team) defeated the South AS 3-1, despite the South outhitting the North 11-4:

Lake County AS:
1B Matt Whitney (AS starter - batting 4th in the order):  1-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 GIDP (.333 - he was going to compete in the SAL AS HR Derby, but it was rained out down in Rome, GA.)
C Matt McBride (AS starter - batting 6th in the order):  0-1, 1 RBI, 1 SF (.000)
SS Carlos Rivero (AS starter - batting 9th in the order):  0-3, 1 K, 1 E (1-missed catch) (.000)

RHP Hector Rondon - H (1) - 1.0 IP, 1 H; 3 F; 7 S/7 B (0.00)

SS-A Mahoning Valley - their game with Jamestown (FLA) was rained out; it will be made up as part of a DH on Wednesday.

Rk-A GCL Indians:  I'm presuming their game with the Braves was rained out because MinorLeagueBaseball.com is not reporting it (jsut says "Scheduled,") even though the game was supposed to take place at 12:00 PM EDT on Tuesday.  Other reports have come in, but not for them or the Dodgers and Nationals.

Take care and have a great day!

These are great posts
and I look forward to the updates on my favorite Indians farmhands every day.

But if this were a resume, my feedback would be "great resume, but tough to pick thru".  It is pretty dense text, and I am wondering if you'd consider just putting the team names in bold so that we could more readily scan for the names we're looking for?  I know where Chuck Lofgren is....when I want an update on him, it would be easier to go scan for his team name in bold than to look thru the text the way it is.

Not trying to look at the glass as half-empty because I love your contributions...just trying to squeeze even more benefit out of it.

Thanks for the suggestion - I'll try that!
Hello siddfynch,

Glad to hear you enjoy the reports; I'll try to keep them coming as often as I can.  :-)

I know; it's dense text - that's why I highlighted the ones who did the best or are the most interesting (to me at least) on that particular day, but perhaps it would be easier to just highlight the team name, and perhaps with something really noteworthy, to use italics.
I'll begin doing that with the 6-24 report; I've already completed the 6-23 report and didn't see your post until after I finished it.

Again, thanks for the suggestion - greatly appreciated!  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

Indians prospects
Hi indiansfan,

Just an update on the GCL indians-they beat the Braves 8-3.  Nice pitching from the starter and debut for Jason Smit.  No players from current draft that I could discern.  Robbie Alcombrack still does not have his swing under control, apparently.

Early odds are that Benny F will replace Dellucci who is projected to be out for some time.  Even before this, there were rumblings about Dmitri Young.  The Nats want pitching for him according to the rumors.

by sdtribefan on Jun 20, 2007 6:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Alcombrack is off to a slow start!
Hello sdtribefan,

Yes, Alcombrack is off to a slow start; he's young enough to improve (19,) but right now, doesn't look like much of a hitter.

Only problem with Dmitri Young, who's having a nice year in Washington, is where would he play?  I suppose he could mix into that 1B/DH logjam we have, but that will take more ABs away from Garko and Hafner, which might not be a bad thing with the way those two are struggling right now, but Young wouldn't help them get out of their slumps either, in all likelihood, because those two will get fewer ABs.

Interesting trade possibility, but I'd think only someone like a Sean Smith or someone of that caliber at most for Young, would be beneficial for the Indians, rather than a Miller, Lofgren, Jensen Lewis, a pitcher of that caliber and ceiling, etc.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

Was at the Aeros Game...
Pretty nasty collision in the game between Brown and Cabrera.  Cabrera went down and didn't move for a little bit.  Then he just sorta rolled over and got up quickly.  Looked pretty painful, but both players stayed in the game.

Barton finished 2-3, with the HBP, and the only "out" he made was on an error where he beat out a recovery throw by showing some amazing speed getting down to first.  That running also scored, what turned out to be, the game-winning run.  Quickest I've seen him in all of the games of his I've been at.

Random Highlights
Sleeper watch:  Stefan Gartrell, OF, 6'2", 220 lbs.  R/R.  Drafted as a senior out of USF last summer.  Hit .308/.438/.449 last year in the Appy League.  Moves up to the SAL this year:  .313/.378/.538 with 10 HR's.  .385 in last 10 games.  Will turn 24 in August, so not young.  I had my eye on Gartrell last year as a sleeper before the draft.  Needs to move up fast though.  White Sox organiazation.

Chris Valaika update.  Dude started out hot in the MWL and has stayed hot:  .318/.356/.500.   Reds organization.

Eddy Degerman- 1-1, 2.93, 40 IP, 13 BB, 59 K's!  PItching in high A in  the Cards organization.  Drafted as a senior, so not young either.
