6/16 Daily Minor League Diary

Well what do we have going on today?  The FSL All-Star game is today, featuring players Jay Bruce, Cameron Maybin, and Jake McGee among others.  On the mound throughout the various leagues and levels are Tommy Hanson, Jair Jurrjens, JoJo Reyes, Mike Madsen(a personal fav), Matt Garza, and Gio Gonzalez, who was listed to start yesterday but was bumped back for some reason.

Who are you watching today?

Not Minors
but Shaun Marcum quietly putting up some very good numbers, especially since he move to the rotay. 11k in 7 ip today, bringing his season total to 61 K in 58 innings. Only 43 hits, 21 bb. Almost more K's than baserunners.....

Matt Cain vs Dice K
Yet another excellent effort by Matt Cain goes to waste:  7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K.  HR by ManRam is the difference in the game.  Not saying Dice K wasn't better, but the Giants don't have a hitter who can carry ManRam's backpack right now.  Cain's ERA stands at 3.15 with a W-L of 2-7.  Tragic.

Dice K went 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 K's.  ERA now stands at 4.18 with an 8-5 W-L.

The most encouraging aspect of Cain's game was the 1 BB.  If he can get the BB/9 down, he will be something else, if he isn't already.

The Giants disgust me now
Atleast my Astros are in a crummy division and have a sliver of hope. And Hunter Pence. The Giants have well-what? I'll always root for em but this year sucks.

does this count as a B07 "done"? he did use the word "done" but it wasn't as strong a statement as i've come to expect. "looking more and more done" instead of "is done."

Sam Deduno
Somewhat of a favorite of mine pitched pretty effectively today.  7 innings of one run ball with 10 k's and 3 bb's.

He's always been a favorite of mine due to his ability to induce groundballs and strike guys out.  The real knock on him has always been his control and the fact that he's a bit undersized and while his season numbers aren't outstanding he's been really heating up lately.  In 21 June innings he's only given up 6 earned runs for a 2.57 era to go along with a 27/6 k/bb ratio.

Is he becoming a legitimate prospect?  He just turned 23 and has dramatically reduced his walks this year while striking out over a batter an inning.  Oh, he also has a gets groundballs 60% of the time.

Indians' Overview!
Hello everyone,

Indians lost to the Braves 6-2; Byrd was outdueled by Smoltz (though the Indians also chased a lot of Smoltz's pitches out of the zone, something they don't normally do.)  Edgar Renteria went 5-5 - 3 1B, 1 2B, 1 HR.  Casey Blake did extend his hitting streak to 25 games with a 3rd-inning single, tying Ichiro for the longest hitting streak in baseball this year.

LHP Rafael Perez gave up the solo shot to Renteria in the 9th, but otherwise, was outstanding:

4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 1 HR; 4 G/2 F; 40 S/18 B (1.00)

Onto the Minors:

AAA Buffalo - defeated Norfolk (BAL) 3-0:

2B Joe Inglett - 1-3, 1 R, 1 3B (.261 - 1st time I recall him playing his natural position of 2B in some time, maybe even this year.)
1B Ryan Mulhern - 0-3, 1 BB, 3 K (.312 - has struck out 2+ times in 3/5 games; 18 BB/58 K in 218 ABs.)
RF Brad Snyder - 0-4 (.250 - 6-36, .167, in last 11 G; 21 BB/61 K in 172 ABs.)
CF Jonathan Van Every - 2-3, 1 SB (1-2nd) (.429 - off to a hot start at AAA - 6-14.)

LHP Juan Lara - H (5) - 1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 K; 1 G/1 F; 9 S/6 B (6.00)
RHP Edward Mujica - S (11) - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 K; 1 G/1 F; 11 S/5 B (6.35 - has given up 16 H in last 11 appearances, 10.0 IP.)

Norfolk:
C J.R. House - 1-3, 1 BB (.298)
LF Jon Knott - 1-4, 2 K (.178)

RHP Paul Shuey - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K; 2 G; 8 S/6 B (4.50 - the former Indian in 21.0 AAA IP:  28 H/11 ER/1 HR/8 BB/21 K, 1.69 GO/AO, .318 BAA.)

AA Akron - defeated Portland (BOS) 9-6:

SS Asdrubal Cabrera - 2-4, 2 R, 1 BB (.321)
1B Jordan Brown - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI (.322)

RF Brian Barton - 1-4, 1 R, 2 K, 2 SB (12-2nd both times,) 1 S (.313)
DH Michael Aubrey - 0-4, 1 R, 1 BB (.105)
CF Trevor Crowe - 3-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB (13-2nd) (.196 - this might be his first 3-hit game of the year, and certainly not more than his 2nd for sure; might he finally break over the .200 mark in the coming days?)
3B Rodney Choy Foo - 0-1, 3 BB, 1 GIDP (.280)

LHP Reid Santos - 4.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 2 HR, 1 HB; 4 G/5 F (2.28 - I don't know if the Indians are stretching out his arm, but personally, I like him better as a reliever, and he has had more success in that role as well - as a starter in 4 G - 18.2 IP/18 H/7 ER/3 HR/5 BB/9 K, 0.61 GO/AO, .261 BAA, 3.38 ERA; as a reliever in 16 G - 24.2 IP/14 H/4 ER/1 HR/6 BB/19 K, 0.83 GO/AO, .149 BAA, 1.46 ERA.)
RHP Jeff Stevens - 2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 K; 4 F (4.05 - got thrown out along with Akron manager Tim Bogar; I'm presuming because he threw a ball to close to a Portland player, even though he did not have a HB, though a Portland pitcher got thrown out after giving up a GS to C David Wallace, so maybe both sides had problems with the HP umpire's strike zone.)

High-A Kinston - defeated Myrtle Beach (ATL) 7-5:

DH Chris Gimenez - 1-2, 1 R, 3 BB (.287)
1B Stephen Head - 1-5, 2 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K (.258 - could he be splitting time at 1B and DH with LC's Matt Whitney soon?)
C Max Ramirez - 0-3, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K (.297 - along with Meyer, gave up a steal of 2B to a player who had 4 steals before that one.)
3B Wes Hodges - 3-5, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 E (8-fielding) (.325 - now batting in the 5-spot.)
CF John Drennen - 0-5, 1 K (.259/.324/.414, 20 BB/60 K in 263 ABs.)

RHP James Deters - 4.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 K; 8 G/3 F (2.25 - did well in spot start.)
LHP Matthew Meyer - W (2-1) - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K; 5 G (4.20 - in 15.0 High-A IP: 15 H/7 ER/1 HR/8 BB/8 K, 1.77 GO/AO, .259 BAA.)
RHP Michael Finocchi - H (6) - 2.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K; 3 G; 0/2 IR scored (3.20 - struggled with his command, raising his pitch count, so much so that OF Nathan Panther had to take over on the mound!)
OF Nathan Panther - S (1) - 0.2 IP, 2 BB, 1 K; 1 F; 2/3 IR scored (0.00 - I presume he's a lefty, since he bats LH?  Kinston was fortunate to have a sizable lead, but a position player getting a save - amazing!  :-)

Myrtle Beach:
3B Eric Campbell - 0-4, 1 BB, 1 K (.189)
1B Kala Kaaihue - 3-4, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K (.286)

Low-A Lake County - defeated West Virginia (MIL( 12-4:

CF Jason Denham - 3-6, 1 R, 1 K, 1 SB (6-2nd) (.274)
2B Adam Davis - 3-5, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 BB, 2 K (.252)
C Matt McBride - 2-6, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 GIDP (.285)
DH Matt Whitney - 4-6, 3 R, 1 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 1 K (.309 - getting hot again; may be playing a lot of DH, and some 1B as well, at Kinston with Stephen Head soon.)
RF Cirilo Cumberbatch - 1-5, 3 R, 1 BB (.343)
LF Nick Weglarz - 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K (.249)
SS Carlos Rivero - 2-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HBP (.260)

RHP Josh Tomlin - W (6-0) - 5.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HR (solo,) 2 WP; 4 G/7 F (3.06)
RHP Luis Valdez - 3.0 IP, 2 H, 2 K; 3 G/4 F (5.45 - has given up just 3 HR in 38.0 IP.)
RHP Cody Bunkelman - 1.0 IP, 1 H; 1 G/2 F (5.34)

Rafael Perez
His #'s are outstanding in the limited time he's been out there thus far this year.  How does he fit into the Indians' plans?  I see most of his outings are 2+ innings.  Are they grooming him to be a starter someday?

by mcq fesijiba on Jun 17, 2007 7:58 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's possible, but from what I've heard, it sounds
more like he will remain a reliever for the time being, and probably in the future as well.

Hello mcq fesijiba,

Yes, Perez has been very impressive, and as you probably know, he was a starter in the Minor Leagues; he even was in AAA Buffalo's rotation to begin this season.

We've talked about this at LGT - while Perez could probably be a solid back-end of the rotation starter (probably better than either Sowers or Lee at this point,) he'll likely be more dominant coming out of the bullpen - he's always been quite lethal on lefties (though righties haven't been great against him either, though better than LH hitters,) so, combine that with the fact that Wedge didn't move Perez into the #5 spot when Sowers was sent back to Buffalo (LHP Jason Stanford coming up from Buffalo to take over that spot on a temporary basis at least, though he will start against Philadelphia this week, opposing Kyle Kendrick,) I suspect the Indians see him more as a reliever in the short-term and in the long-term.

I suspect the Indians see him as a good setup-man in the future, a LHP who can get RH hitters out, so I suspect the Indians see him as filling that setup role someday, not just a LOOGY.  Of course, things can change, but with the other options the Indians have coming for the starting rotation (Westbrook and Lee having long-term contracts, Carmona becoming more of a lock for the rotation long-term, Miller and Lofgren projected to be long-term additions to the starting rotation, with others like Slocum, S. Lewis, etc. providing depth,) I suspect Perez will remain a reliever.

Just my 2 cents - hopefully, this is helpful!  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

Head
Hi indiansfan,

I'm not trying to be picky I wouldn't be too surprised for Head to be on his way to Akron when Whitney moves.  Head'd stats have shown a nice steady improvement this year and it's my feeling he will move in conjunction with Brown.  Anyway, that's my theory!

by sdtribefan on Jun 17, 2007 8:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I respect your opinion, but I'm not sure I agree
with your assessment that Head will be moved up when Whitney presumably moves up to High-A.

Hello sdtribefan,

Different opinions add to the discussion, so feel free to disagree with me - I'm only going by what I hear, but we all know that what is being said isn't always what happens.  :-)

From what I heard over at LGT, it sounds like Whitney and Head could platoon at 1B (though I suspect the other would DH in the same game most of the time; Head wouldn't get many ABs if it was a straight platoon, and while Head has been a disappointment so far and is losing his prospect status, if he has any chance at helping the Indians in the future, putting him in a platoon role now likely will kill any chance of him helping the Indians in the long-term - he needs regular ABs.)

However, I'm not sure I agree with you in regards that he will move up to AA just because Whitney will likely move up to High-A soon.

From what I see between his 2006 and 2007 stats, his BB/K ratio has deteriorated at the same level:

  1. 54 BB/73 K in 477 ABs
  2. 22 BB/45 K in 256 ABs (projected out to 477 ABs - 41 BB/84 K - a drop-off in plate discipline from last year.)
Yes, his BA, OBP, and SLG have improved, but only marginally in the BA and OBP:
  1. .235/.319/.377
  2. .258/.332/.461
His SLG has improved considerably (mostly due to the fact that his XBH% has gone up from 2006-2007 - 8.3% in 2006, 11.7% so far in 2007,) but at the loss of some plate discipline - I'm not confident he'll be able to handle AA pitching at this point; from what I see, I think he could be an all-or-nothing hitter, hitting maybe .200-.220 at best at AA, if that.

I understand that Head has to move along and should already have been at AA, so you may be right that he will be up to AA when Whitney presumably moves to High-A, but I'm not confident Head will do well; his improvement at High-A, outside of SLG, hasn't improved as much as one would like to see out of a college draftee who's repeating High-A.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

Three other notes about Head - why I think he
could use more High-A time and why he might not do well at AA if he's promoted soon.

Hello again sdtribefan,

Just looking through Head's stats a little more carefully, three other things stood out:

1. His Left/Right splits are extreme, and not the way you'd think they would be -

Vs. LHP: .319/.400/.493 (!)
Vs. RHP: .235/.306/.449 (!)

Maybe it's a good sign that he can hit lefties, but it's amazing he can't handle righties; if he could hit the righties as well as the lefties, he'd be a decent to solid prospect (though it would be more remarkable if he could do this at AA and AAA at his age of 23.)

2. His Home/Road splits:

Home:  .307/.384/.504
Road:  .202/.269/.412

If I recall correctly, Kinston's Grainger Stadium is more of a pitchers' park (though I'm not entirely sure on that,) so again, maybe that's a good sign, but conversely, if Head can only hit well at Kinston, that might be a problem if he goes to a league where he can't hit at Kinston.

3. His Day/Night splits:

Day:  .302/.333/.558
Night:  .249/.332/.441

It's nice he can hit in the daytime, but being that most games are at night, regardless of the league, that doesn't bode well for Head long-term if he can't turn this around.

Therefore, I really don't think he's ready for AA; whether he moves up or not when Whitney presumably arrives at High-A in about 10 days or so, we'll see.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.

Here are Head's numbers that interest me
April .224  .295 .353 .648
May .252  .331 .495 .826
June .313 .380 .531 .912

Hi indiansfan,

Your numbers are an accurate appraisal of his stats last year and this.  I am the type of guy who looks to where a ballplayer projects and I like steady improvement in the areas that the organization wants the player to improve.  Head, somewhat like Drennen, has shown consistent improvement from last year numbers in HiA and there early numbers this year.  Head's big problem has been change of speeds from RH pitching this year and that is improving significantly.  Drennen, like Sizemore before him, needs to improve against LH pitching.

Some players just don't improve like Snyder and his Ks.  That's why I put so much stock into the numbers behind the numbers, if that sounds esoteric enough.  BTW, I put little stock into anything said on LGT.  You are the best thing they have going!

by sdtribefan on Jun 17, 2007 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's a positive sign!
Hello sdtribefan,

Those numbers you cite are encouraging; I thought Head seemed to hit for a few more XBHs of late (I think I even mentioned something like that in one of my write-ups for Head, though I wasn't sure at the time if I was imagining it or not.  Now I know I wasn't imagining it.  Thanks for confirming that!  :-)

I wonder if Head's problems with breaking stuff from RHP is because he had (and maybe still does) have a tendency to pull the ball, something the Indians have tried to work on with him, and from tracking the Kinston game logs last year, Head was doing a better job spraying his hits around, but if he is back in that pull syndrome again, that could maybe explain why he's having such trouble with offspeed stuff from RHP.  Maybe he makes a more conscious effort to stay back on the ball and use the whole field when facing LHP; that might be why his numbers are considerably better against LHP.  I'm not sure this is true; just theorizing.  :-)

"BTW, I put little stock into anything said on LGT.  You are the best thing they have going!"

Thanks - I greatly appreciate that!  :-)  I'll try to do the best job I can reporting on the Indians and their Minor League system here and there!

Take care and have a great day!

Head
indiansfan,

I have a good friend who is a transplanted NYer who has substituted Kinston emotionally for the Yankees and goes to a lot of games.

He has told me that breaking balls are not the issue as much as changeups, especially away.  He has had more difficultly keeping his shorter stroke versus RHers.

Remember, my fiend is a lawyer so who really knows.

taylor teagarden
just doesn't stop. 2-3, with another homer (12) and another walk.

he was the catcher tonight, as well, be curious as to what his elbow status is. given that supposedly his defense was already top notch coming out of college, not sure why the Rangers don't just rest his arm for all of this year so there's less chance of long term problems. Let him focus on his hitting, though god knows that isn't much of a problem.

and he should certainly be promoted to AA soon.

Slim pickings tonight.

Eugenio Velez- 3 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .344. for AA CT.

Absolutely nothing else of significance to report.

Henry Sosa makes his high A debut tomorrow for San Jose.  It's about time they promoted one of the Augusta pitchers.  Surprised it wasn't one of the older pitchers.  They must be thinkging very highly of Sosa right now.

well,
I i know it's just in A ball, but Brian Wilson having a 6/0 K/BB ratio on his rehab stint in San Jose has to be reassuring. I know he should dominate A ball, obviously, but given that really the only question with Wilson is if he can throw strikes, nice to see him do so, whatever the level.

guess he'll be back in AAA this week?

Tigers
AAA Toledo:
CF Ryan Raburn: 1/4, tripled, 2 RBI (I keep saying it, but he needs a shot in MLB)
Chris Shelton: 2/4, HR, RBI

AA Erie:
Not much offense.
SP Jair Jurrjens 6 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 2K, 3/11 GO/FO ratio (which is kind of abnormal for him to give up so many more flyballs)

A+ Lakeland DNP
Tigers Minor leaguers in the All-Star game:
SP Luke French 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K
CF Cameron Maybin 2/4, double, 2 K
OF Michael Hernandez 0/2
1B Kevin Roberson 0/4, RBI

A West Michigan
CF Gorkys Hernandez 2/3, BB, K
C James Skelton 1/3, double, 2 RBI has a line of 333/400/467 on the season.  Nice.
LF Deik Scram 2/4, tripled, RBI has a line of 347/427/485 on the season.  Not too bad.
22 year old SP Jeff Gerbe went 7 innings allowing 0 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, and struck out 5.
