6/15 Daily Minor League Diary
Ok, what's on tap today? The FSL is off today, but we do have 5 interesting young arms going in various other leagues. Michael Bowden makes his 6th start in AA tonight, hopefully he gets back on track. Gio Gonzalez goes today, as well as Franklin Morales, and Phil Humber. Jon Lester is starting tonight, this could be one of his last AAA starts before taking over the 5th spot in the Red Sox rotation.
Today also marks the MLB debut for one of my personal favorites, Chase Headley. I'll be tuning into WGN at 2PM EDT to catch his first game.
What is everyone else looking forward to today?

Thanks
Gio is a good looking prospect for the ChiSox, but I'm not sure how quickly he'll make the show. I could see a promotion to AAA later this month or in July. As for him hitting the bigs, depending on what happens with the Sox's free agent situation, Gio could contend for a rotation spot next spring if Buehrle is gone.

cool
going to be really interesting to see how the prospects from last year's back end of the top 100 lists stack up on the front end next year: Buchholz, Bowden, Chamberlain, Kennedy, Davis, McGee, etc.
I'm guessing all 6 of those guys -- coincidentally a pair from each of 3 AL east teams -- will be in the top 50, one way or the other.

Parra up to Nashville
Apparently, he's fully recovered from injury and is hitting mid 90's again (awesome for a lefty of course).
He was leading the Southern League with a 2.68 ERA.
80.2 IP, 80K, about a 1.2 WHIP.
Glad to see him doing well.

JUST HEARD THIS
Montero has a 3rd degree ankle strain and could miss the entire GCL season. However he looked great in extended spring training according to Cashman.
A huge set back, hopefully he gets back and gets his ABs. He is still very young, but I was hoping he would have been challenged with A Ball after extended spring training.

In Augusta, Ben Snyder got back on track after a couple of shaky starts: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's. Season line: 7-2, 2.15, 71 IP, 14 BB, 75 K's with a GO/AO= 1.49. One of several Augusta pitchers who should be pitching at a higher level.

Indians' Overview!
Indians lost to the Braves 5-4, giving up 2 runs in the 9th. In my opinion, a questionable move by Manager Eric Wedge to bring C.C. Sabathia out for the 9th for these reasons:
- Sabathia didn't have the great command he has shown in his last few starts, as he left several balls up in the zone, even in 2-strike counts, leading to a bunch of bloop hits by the Braves. That might have been due to #2.
- Sabathia has pitched 2 CGs in his last two starts.
- The Indians had just retaken the lead 4-3 after 8 innings as 3B Casey Blake hit his 10th HR of the season, a solo shot, off of Rafael Soriano in the bottom of the 8th, which also extended Blake's hitting streak to 24 games.
- Sabathia had pitched over 100 pitches after 8 innings.
- Not as important a reason, but Sabathia would have only been eligible for his 10th win, and at worst, would have gotten a ND.
On another note, Travis Hafner looked a little more confident at the plate tonight, taking "full" swings at the balls he swung at, which is why he drove the ball a little better tonight, though he only had an opposite-field single to show for it.
One final note: The Indians have signed their first-round pick from the 2007 MLB Draft from Lewis-Clark State College, Beau Mills. He was at Jacobs Field tonight and did an interview with the Sportstime Ohio crew. He said that he will get a crash course on playing 1B at SS-A Mahoning Valley and be there about a week before he moves up to Low-A Lake County. His first game with Mahoning Valley will be on Tuesday as the DH (he'll play a few games at DH to feel comfortable at the plate first before he begins playing at 1B.)
Onto the Minors:
AAA Buffalo - defeated Norfolk (BAL) 5-4:
DH Ben Francisco - 2-5, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 K (.338)
1B Ryan Mulhern - 1-5, 1 K (.317 - batted for the first time this year in the cleanup spot.)
RF Brad Snyder - 0-4, 2 K (.256 - BA is going the wrong direction, as he's batting .219, 7-32, over last 10 G; 21 BB/61 K in 168 ABs - a 36.3% strikeout/AB ratio.)
CF Jonathan Van Every - 2-3, 2 R, 1 3B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K (.364)
RHP Jensen Lewis - BS (1) - 1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HR (solo to Knott); 2 G/2 F; 18 S/18 B (5.40 - AAA debut.)
RHP Bubbie Buzachero - 0.0 IP, 1 BB; 2 S/4 B (3.81)
RHP Edward Mujica - 1.0 IP, 1 K; 1 G/1 F; 9 S/3 B (6.60 - command seems to be back in order again.)
Norfolk:
C J.R. House - 0-3, 2 BB (.298 - along with Moreno, did allow a steal of 2B to Jason Cooper, who had stolen 4 other bases before this one.)
LF Jon Knott - 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K (.176 - HR #7)
RHP Francis Beltran - L (1-6) - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER; 2 G/1 F; 10 S/7 B (5.83 - former highly-regarded Cubs pitching prospect, now 27-YO, has given up 39 H/18 ER/2 HR/7 BB/23 K, 1.14 GO/AO, .331 BAA in 28.1 IP.)
AA Akron - lost to Portland (BOS) 9-3:
2B Argenis Reyes - 1-4, 1 R, 1 SB (17-2nd) (.268)
DH Michael Aubrey - 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K (.133 - OUCH!)
LF-RF Ryan Goleski - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 SB (6-2nd) (.252)
CF Trevor Crowe - 0-2, 2 K (.187 - was ejected by the HP umpire in the 5th, leading to Brown moving from 1B to LF, Goleski moving from LF to RF, Barton moving from RF to CF, and Osborn coming into the game to play at 1B - quite a chain reaction, huh? :-)
RHP Cliff Politte (rehab) - 1.0 IP, 1 BB, 3 K (3.38 - getting sharper.)
RHP Joe Ness - L (4-1) - 5.0 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 3 HR (solo, 2, and 3-run shots,) 1 WP; 3 G/7 F (5.88 - good control, as evidenced by the BB/K ratio, but the command was way off, making him far too hittable.)
Portland:
RHP Michael Bowden - W (3-2) - 6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 1 HB, 1 BK; 9 G/2 F (4.55)
High-A Kinston - lost to Myrtle Beach (ATL) 7-6 in 12 innings:
CF Jose Constanza - 2-7, 2 R, 1 3B, 4 K, 1 SB (15-2nd,) 1 GIDP (.244 - OUCH night b/c of the Ks, but he did throw out a runner at home.)
C Chris Gimenez - 0-2, 4 BB, 1 K, 1 CS (2-2nd,) 1 E (3-missed catch,) 1 PB (5) (.285)
3B Wes Hodges - 2-6, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 K (.316)
SS Josh Rodriguez - 2-4, 1 3B, 2 BB, 1 SB (11-2nd) (.237)
RHP Frank Herrmann - 6.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K; 6 G/7 F (3.13 - another QS for the undrafted FA out of Harvard; at this rate, could see AA Akron in the second half.)
RHP Erik Stiller - L (2-1) - 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K; 3 G/3 F (0.64 - first run given up in 2007 in 14.0 IP.)
Myrtle Beach:
SS Elvis Andrus - 0-6, 5 K, 1 E (18-fielding) (.225 - BIG OUCH night!)
3B Eric Campbell - 3-6, 1 R, 1 2B (.186)
1B Kala Kaaihue - 2-5, 1 R, 1 BB (.276)
RHP Moises Hernandez - 5.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 2 HR (2 solos, one to Drennen, one to Jerad Head,) 1 HB; 7 G/5 F (3.35 - is not having anywhere near the success of his younger brother Felix: at High-A at age 23 - 75.2 IP/75 H/26 ER/7 HR/19 BB/41 K, 1.15 GO/AO, .254 BAA.)
Low-A Lake County - lost to West Virginia (MIL) 8-3:
2B David Uribes - 2-5, 1 2B, 1 CS (3-2nd) (.224)
SS Carlos Rivero - 1-5, 1 2B, 2 K, 1 CS (1-3rd)
1B Matt Whitney - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB (.300 - could be moving up to High-A soon, as 2007 1st-Rd. pick Beau Mills is expected to be playing 1B for LC in about 10 days or so.)
DH Roman Pena - 0-3, 1 RBI, 3 K (.269 - has struck out 19 times in last 44 ABs over last 11 G.)
RF Cirilo Cumberbatch - 2-4, 1 R, 1 E (1-throw) (.355)
LF Nick Weglarz - 2-4, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI (.245)
RHP Hector Rondon - L (4-4) - 3.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 HR (3-run,) 1 HB; 5 G/2 F (4.22 - shortest outing for him in at least the last 11 starts, going at least 5+ innings in 8 of those 11.)
RHP Austin Creps - 3.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 K; 6 G/2 F (4.50)
RHP Matthew Robinson - 1.0 IP, 1 K; 2 G (0.00 - first action of 2007 and Low-A debut; in 17 G w/ the GCL Indians in 2006: 32.1 IP/30 H/13 ER/1 HR/13 BB/28 K, 1.63 GO/AO, .238 BAA.)

Yes, I found that out later on, though Borowski
Hello sdtribefan,
I respect your opinion, and granted, after coming back from the bathroom and seeing that the leadoff man hit a 2B, I thought for sure that it was JoeBo who was in there, but when I found out it was CC, I thought, what is Wedge doing?
I can understand you don't want to lose your closer or setup guy, but at the same time, you don't want to lose your ace either, and CC had gone two straight games throwing 9 IP; CC didn't have the same command as the last few outings and seemed to labor a bit, which is all the more reason why I thought someone else should have been in there in the 9th. I admit that Borowski might not have been a viable option last night, nor Betancourt, but I'd think I would take Mastny (despite his recent control problems) or Perez over risking CC's arm, and how many pitchers throw 3 CGs consecutively in this day and age? None that I can think of.
Therefore, while I can understand why Wedge left CC out there, I still think it was a very risky move, which is why I would have gone with another pitcher. And because of Dellucci's and Peralta's bad defense, it turned out to be the wrong move.
Who knows - maybe the Indians would have lost anyway, but still, I'd rather lose that way than force CC to pitch another inning when he labored more than in his last two starts. And, of course, CC is going to say he wants to go back out there and that he can handle it, being the ace and such, but as the manager, I wouldn't have let him go back out there. You want CC fresh throughout this season and the postseason, if the Indians make it; having CC throw 3 consecutive CGs when CC labored in that 3rd game was not the best move toward that goal in my opinion.
Just my 2 cents. :-)
Take care and have a great day!

Most reports would probably rate Michaels
Hello sdtribefan,
I think by most defensive metrics (granted, they're flawed,) Michaels' range factor was considered to be solid to very good, if I'm correct. That's why he was the 4th OFer for the Phillies - he could play all 3 OF positions well enough, especially the corners, but was passable in CF as a backup. Can you see Dellucci out in CF, or even RF? No offense, but I can't, whereas Michaels has already replaced Nixon in RF and even started in CF for Grady last year, I think.
Plus, I can recall Michaels making several nice catches in LF over the past 1.5 years, including the 2 he caught in Saturday's game and the game-saving catch out near the wall during the Opening Series in Chicago this year. I think I can remember Dellucci making 1, perhaps 2, great catches in LF, but more often than not, he looks far less smooth and fluid out there than Michaels does. I still think Michaels would have had one or both of those flyballs that Dellucci couldn't reach on Friday night, costing the Indians a win against the Braves.
I agree - you wouldn't use your last reserve OFer in a close game, though if you had to, you could shift Blake to the OF and put Rouse in at 3rd base if necessary. Not an ideal situation, but a passable one if you had to do it.
Maybe the Spring Training idea of having 5 OFers on the roster wasn't as outrageous an idea as one might have thought when the idea first came up (when the Indians were deciding whether Garko or one of Choo, Francisco, or Gutierrez would make the ballclub - mostly Francisco because he was RHed and Gutierrez was just returning from tweaking his hamstring, I believe. From most accounts I've heard, Francisco is also a solid OFer who can play all 3 OF positions range-wise, so it's likely he could probably play LF better than Dellucci as well.)
Just my 2 cents. :-)
Take care and have a great day!

Being better than Dellucci defensively
Hi indiansfan,
Not impressed with stats becuase I have watched him play so much. I trust my eyes more. Better than Dellucci? Probably. Better than Nixon? Maybe but for the arm. On a par with Grady, Blake and Gutz? Not in his wildest dreams!
No question in my mind that Francisco has better range than Dellucci, Michaels and Nixon. He might have a better bat as well. Cannot say that I would replace Gutz with him though. Rather see Gutz get more time rather than less. He would have made any of the catches we are talking about on cruise control.
Just one man's opinion.

I agree with that!
I don't think Michaels is a GC, and isn't on par with Grady, Blake, or Gutierrez defensively, but certainly is better than Dellucci's defense, so I agree with you.
Regarding Michaels' arm, I think it's solid, and probably better than that for LF. Nixon's arm of late, to me at least, doesn't seem like the "cannon" it was, I believe, in Boston - I'm guessing the injuries, especially to his legs, have taken away some of his arm strength as he can't get his legs behind the throw as much as he used to, so probably I'd rate Michaels' arm better than Nixon's by a small margin, though admittedly, I don't remember too many of Michaels' throws from RF, just LF, but recalling Nixon's throws from RF, they weren't lasers or anything close like some of the throws Gutierrez has made out there from RF or Micheals' solid throws from LF.
Regarding Francisco, it's too bad the Indians don't use Grady in CF, Gutierrez in RF, and Francisco in LF - I'd think that would be a very solid above-average to excellent OF, especially in terms of range. I don't know if it's due to the fact that Francisco's arm is reportedly weak that many runners seem to have challenged him in the Minor Leagues this year or not, but I've seen Francisco has thrown out several runners this year at 2B and 3B (maybe even one or two at HP as well,) so he'd probably do quite well in LF.
Of course, with the Indians in the pennant race and due to their veteran experience, they're not going to give up Nixon and Dellucci now, especially with Dellucci's 3-yr. contract, but I'm thinking Gutierrez and Francisco could both outperform the two veterans defensively for sure, and right now, probably offensively as well. Gutierrez's at-bats have certainly looked better than Nixon's and Dellucci's at-bats of late, and given the chance based on Francisco's very solid AAA season, I'd suspect he could probably get more hits than Nixon and Dellucci have been getting lately, especially since he has more speed than those two do, so it's possible he could get some more INF hits as well.
Just my 2 cents. :-)
Take care and have a great day!

Grady, Benny and Gutz
If they were not in a pennant race, I think this OF would be given a shot. But with Gutz and Choo out of options after this year, Benny might be stuck.
There are also a couple of OF types at Akron that probably have higher upsides. Benny's best chance is probably a trade, even if it might be his.

Tigers
Toledo AAA
Ryan Raburn is still on fire. Find a spot for this guy, Tigers. Hit a HR and now has a line of 295/401/564. 41/53 BB/K ratio in 241 ABs. He had a rep of being kinda bad on D (former infielder), but he's been playing some CF this year, and holding his own for the most part.
Chris Shelton. 0/4 and continues to be mostly unimpressive with little power and 72 Ks in 238 ABs.
Jordan Tata was solid going 5 2/3 innings and allowing 2 ER , but still needs more work to get sharp.
Erie AA
Second Baseman Michael Hollimon hit his 5th HR. He's having a decent season. Nothing that really stands out though.
First Baseman Jeff Larish was 0/5 and has been a bit disappointing hitting only .233 on the season.
Lakeland A+
Second Baseman Willie Rhymes was 2/4 and is hitting .323 on the season with good plate discipline. A poor man's Dustin Pedroia? Ok, maybe a little optimistic.
West Michigan A
Not much here. Gorkys Hernandez singled in 4 ABs.
Kenny Rogers pitched 5 solid innings in rehab, but didn't get any run support or much help from the defense.
