Jonathan Broxton's freeway speeding?

Metaphorically, of course.

Did my eyes deceive me, or did Brox really hit 101 on the gun last night during LoDuca's AB?

It looked like (I was on the phone with the GF, so I didn't hear what Scully said), Brox hit 101 with a fastball, and then 97 on a slider, later in the AB.  A 97 mph slider?  Is this even possible??  I'm guessing it was the splitter, but it looked an awful lot like a ridiculously-unhittable slider.

Anyway, don't know if anyone caught the AB, but all I can say is "Wow."

what i saw
saw 96-98 FB last night but have seen him hit 101 in the past. i think scully was fooled and called a fastball a slider because it had good movement. his slider is usually 87-89 sometimes a tick or two higher.

explosion in radar gun readings
how much credence is there to the theory that ballparks (and of course Fox) are maybe, uh, boosting some readings? I know Aaron Heilman wasn't hitting 97 earlier this year.

i could see why they'd do that
but it doesn't bode well for at last one white sox pitcher.  as i mentioned in a diary from saturday, dewon day's fastball consistently sat at 82-83.  that according to the cell's radar gun.  he hit 87 one time.  otherwise never faster than 83.  and lidge hit 96, jenks hit 95...i always thought jenks threw harder than that.

I've also been
thinking this could be the case.  Or maybe it's just that the gun operators aim differently now, whether that's some MLB/Fox directive or not.

But it really does seem like the velocity's been going up.

Heilman....
Where was he hitting 97? The Mets gun is notoriously slow, or at least the SNY one is. They have Wagner hitting 92-93 most of the time...

Fast Slider
Didn't Billy Koch have a stupidly fast slider?

DS gun
is usually the most accurate gun around; even a bit on the slow side. Broxton brings it. Hes awesome to watch.

Thanks
That is really F'in cool.

They were definitely reporting the speeds as higher than this on TV, though.

Revved up guns
I can't remember if it was FOX or ESPN, but I saw where Zumaya hit 107 on their gun, so yeah... I think we should take any anomalous readings such as this with a huge grain of salt.
