MOD II: Mariners

Mariners fans UNITE!

Star-divide

Alright M's fans...
Again, the M's have the following picks in the first five rounds of the draft: 11, 52, 76, 106, 136, & 166. We've talked about the first round pick and like I mentioned before, I don't think Price, Wieters, Vitters, Heyward, Harvey, Moustakas, Detwiler, Dominguez, Parker or Mills will be available. But, I'd be very happy if either Aumont or Bumgarner fell to us at 11.

So, let's start talking about the Mariners' supplemental pick, and beyond. Their pick in the sandwich round is #52. I'm hoping Justin Jackson or Nevin Griffith fall, but I'm not holding my breath. I would love Matt Mangini, who BA ranked #52 - but I think because he's more of a "name" than some of the other players around there, he might be taken before then.

Has anyone seen Mitch Canham (C- Oregon State)? What are your thoughts?

Has anyone seen Nick Hagadone (LHP - UW)? I tried to go see him last Saturday, but he didn't pitch. My question would be: do you think he can start? I would be reluctant to pick a reliever that high, so I would want to know that he could be a starter. I think you'd have to try him there anyway - he could always go back to the 'pen if it didn't work out, and as a 6'5" LHP that touches 95, there's a lot of upside there.

Some other guys I wouldn't mind at 52: James Simmons (RHP - UC Riverside), Kyle Blair (RHP - Los Gatos HS),  Jake Arrieta (RHP - Texas Christian), Nick Tepesch (RHP - Blue Springs HS)

I also like Wes Roemer & Kellen Kulbacki, but I'd like them alot better at 76...

Anyone else I should look at in the supplemental?

What about rounds 2-5? I'm a BA subscriber, so I have the top 200 list, but I don't want to give out all of "my guys" (the guys I like) to other SDs who might not be subscribers...

M's fans: Give me some thoughts on guys you like and where you think they might be available. Tell me why you like them.

Because I didn't really discuss it in MOD #1, here are some of my general draft philosophies...

  • Especially since we're only doing 5 rounds, I always want the best player available, regardless of position. I'm open to HS or college kids. I'm open to high-risk, high-reward players and while I want the BPA, I also want a good mix.
  • For players I'm drafting, or considering drafting, I want as much information as possible. I rely on scouting reports, stats (although I take all HS and some college stats with a grain of salt), first-hand accounts of makeup, everything...
  • I want good athletes and I prefer players on the right side of the defensive spectrum. I don't want to draft future 1B/DHs and I don't want to draft current relief pitchers (unless they can become a starter)
  • Those are my three main rules: Best player available, as much information as possible, good athletes at premium positions

Please reply in this thread or you can always contact me any time with draft thoughts.

    I actually think...
Parker, Moskos, & Heyward could possibly slip to #11. For the Mariners, I would pick Aumont over Baumgarner since I think he projects better if that indeed does happen. But I also would think twice on Dominguez or Mills at #1 if you think the team needs a bigtime corner infield bat.

    Hmm
Parker & Heyward could get my attention, but I think I prefer Aumont or Bumgarner over either of them. Not a big Moskos guy & I think Dominguez & Mills would be overdrafts at 11.

    You think
Porcello will be there at 11?  Is that just because of his bonus demands?  He isn't going to fall that far because of his talent; he's pretty much the consensus best prep pitcher in the draft.

    No
Whoops, that was a just a mistake on my part. I don't expect him to be there.
