could be lincecum time

From Rotoworld:
"Giants placed RHP Russ Ortiz on the 15-game disabled list, retroactive to May 2, with elbow neuritis in his right arm."

-On Lincecum coming up-
Pros:  It would be his turn in the rotation.
He is a god.

Cons: Live on ESPN (is this actually a con?)
-Ryan Howard
-Chase Utley

He's not up yet, but if he does get the call, is this is a good thing?  Will he be there to stay?

Frandsen
I think they called up Kevin Frandsen

Frandsen or somebody else will be down
before Sunday

Lincecum is already listed as "inactive" from the Grizzlie's site.

3 hits
Man...you know he'll have a few bad starts someday and the site will freak out.

You guys get your expectations up so high for these guys, but I can't think of a single player that's come up and instantly become a superstar - without any injuries or long stretches of ineffectiveness - since I started looking at this site three years ago. Maybe there are some, but none are coming to mind.

How's his arm doing?
Last I heard, he had a chronic shoulder condition that isn't going away. We'll see where he is in a couple of years...

No he doesnt
He pitched well the other night. All kinds of guys get hurt. It is HARD getting big leaguers out but, he was one of th greatest college pitchers of all-time and dominated right away and Timmy was even better. The sooner that you accept the fact that he is a PHENOM man! A PHENOM in the true sense of the word, the better. NOT a time to temper expectations baby. Idiots and geniouses alike...ride the wave bro! Get ready for Timmy mania. Dont say I didnt warn you.

Chronic Shoulder Tendinitis
Again, let's see where he is in a couple of years:

http://www.minorleagueball.com/story/2007/3/23/74614/1078

I like Lincecum better than Weaver; the only reason Weaver's in this thread is because he was offered as an example of a phenom who didn't suffer from either long fallow periods of injuries. I'm pointing out that Weaver DOES have injury issues, and that a chronic condition that could be delivery-related might be something you should monitor more closely on your radar screen.

Sure, I want Lindecum up.  He has shown some mild jitters in first games.  This is on national TV against Cole Hamels, no less.  I would prefer a different venue for his first start, but hey, I'm a Giants fan!  I have to have doubts about something!

by NYYLover1000 on May 3, 2007 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not crap
Just context.

Look, I'm sorry that I'm always the buzzkill in these threads - I understand that most of the people on this site obsess over young guys, and are therefore super-optimistic - but it goes overboard so often...

I mean, there are a half-dozen easily identifiable reasons to dislike a rookie making his first start on national television against another Grade-A young talent and a lineup with dangerous hitters, and you call it backwards crap? And more people aren't disagreeing with you?

I'm increasingly convinced that John is nearly the only person on this site capable of rationally analyzing players and situations. Most posters or diarists are either blinded by roses, or their perspective is negatively skewed - and then they cite a bunch of stats that support their pre-existing view, especially if there's a pet exotic stat that can be used (Oooh! Look at Cain's xFIP! He's terrible!)

So what? You can find damaging stats on every player. You can find positive stats for every player. Stats are interesting, but they aren't the end-all/be-all. Let's let Lincecum get some games under his belt and evaluate him at the end of the season, instead of post a bunch of worried diaries the first time he goes on a 3-game losing streak.

My take
I told my friend whom I invited to watch Tim's debut with me that even if he bombed it, I would still predict that Tim will make the Hall of Fame.

A wild prediction?  You bet.  But for such a leap of faith, I have a strong conviction about this one.

Phillies
Hate to nitpick, but "free swinging phils." The same  "free swinging phils" that went into play last night with the highest team OBP (.364) and most walks (124) in baseball?

by roboz on May 4, 2007 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My thoughts
I don't think Tim will strike out 10 in his debut, although it certainly isn't impossible.  The Giants will likely have him on a 100 pitch count, so his ability to keep the pitch count down, even while striking batters out, will be important.

I don't think Tim will walk three, although the four hits look about right.  My best guess would be one run.

Now that's not to say that I expect Tim to pitch that way every start.  But that is the type of start I would expect him to make a good deal of the time.

Even if he stays up (which I almost can't imagine that he won't), Tim probably won't reach 30 starts.  But here are the predictions I made for him a few weeks ago, assuming he got called up soon enough to start 30 games:

IP -- 186
H --  140
BB --  75
HR --  19
K --  218
ERA -- 3.25

That was when I expected the Giants to keep him on a strict pitch count.  Since then I have heard Brian Sabean say that Tim is comfortable throwing 135 to 140 pitches.  If the Giants unleash him and his control is reasonably good, I think he could one day lead the league in innings pitched.

Some would say that was a pretty aggressive prediction for a guy with only 69 2/3 innings under his belt.  But I have seen him throw 40 2/3 of those innings, and to be honest, I think they are reasonably conservative.

actually
i'm thinking it wouldn't work with the normal rules - if a major league hitter goes up with his only goal being not to strike out, he's not going to strike out the vast majority of the time.  bunting, if nothing else.  or just little swings.  i think it'd have to be just one pitch.  or one strike, anyway.  blow it by him or not.  two balls is a walk.

by Bravesin07 on May 3, 2007 9:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

well
then they wouldn't have to include him in the 5.  that's the strategy.  they'd probably send, like, rollins, utley, victorino, rowand and ruiz, or something like that.

giants would use... bonds obviously... say vizquel, winn, roberts, molina.  giants lineup is actually kind of boring for this, they all strike out at pretty much the same rate.

My Prediction
Giants send Frandsen and Feliz to the Twins on Saturday night, Ramon Ortiz arrives in time to start for the Giants against Cole Hamels on national TV.  Scott Baker (replacement for Ortiz) and Ortiz both get shelled, Hamels strikes out 10 Giants, and and Lincecum strikes out 8 in 5 innings for Fresno.  The Sickels web site goes down from too many hits.

by siddfynch on May 4, 2007 12:17 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow - that could possibly be the Apocalyse...
...as we know it.  Another Ortiz subbing in for Lincecum - who was replacing the original Ortiz in the first place?!  Isn't that scenario like crossing the streams in Ghostbusters?  According to Egon, that's bad...

Nicely done
I think you just made a pretty darn nice prediction.  I don't think the Giants will allow Tim to throw enough pitches to go seven, though.  He's done so only once this season.

by sharksrog on May 4, 2007 3:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is your basis for a good prediction...
...one run or fewer?  I haven't seen you compliment any prediction that had Tim giving up more than one run.

Just so we're clear, is it "good prediction," like "I think your prediction will come true," or "good prediction," like "I like your prediction, because it makes Tim Lincecum look good, and I live to worship Tim Lincecum?"

My prediction:

good prediction

by Galt on May 4, 2007 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Get real!
Get real, baby!  I think there is a decent chance Tim will give up one or fewer runs close to 10 times this year.  I'm pretty sure there will be a few times he doesn't pitch so well, either.

Hey, you don't have to agree with my predictions.  I realize they're very optimistic.  But have you seen the guy pitch?  I haven't really come across anyone who HAS seen him -- including his new major league teammates -- who don't think he is likely to be something special.

I don't believe his Giants teammates gave the nickname "Franchise" to Scott Munter.  :)

I have enough faith in Tim that even if he gets bombed this weekend (at least during the game :) I'll still expect him to be great.

I have seen Tim pitch six of his last seven games.  In those six games he has yielded a total of two runs.

Many things impress me about Tim.  One that impresses me the most is that he is actually pitching BETTER in AAA this season than in Class A or the NCAA last year.

It is my belief that one day you will begrudgingly look back and say, "Well, I guess I have to admit that fool DID know what he was talking about."  :)

by sharksrog on May 4, 2007 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, you get real!
Look, I understand the optimism.  I haven't seen Lincecum pitch, but his numbers at Fresno are unreal.  He's obviously a very special talent.

Have you ever heard of TINSTAAPP?  There is no such thing as a pitching prospect.  Temper your optimism.  Like I said, I understand why you're excited.  I would likely be ecstatic if I were a Giants' fan, and I'm disappointed that the Royals didn't take Lincecum number one overall.  But come on.  You're predicting Tim Lincecum to have a Hall of Fame career based on 7 starts in AAA?

It is my belief that one day you will sink into a suicidal depression after 5'10" max-effort Lincecum blows out his arm.  Yeah, the arm that he never needs to ice, that allows him to throw 140+ pitches per start and throw long toss the next day.  That arm.

In all seriousness, I don't know if that will happen or if it won't.  All I know is that Lincecum has yet to make a major league start, and, until he does, he's not God.  He's not even a Hall of Famer.  They don't vote you in based on 7 starts in AAA.

by ajohnst1 on May 4, 2007 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I understand what you're saying.
I understand what you're saying here.  Really, I do.  If I were in your position, I too would think I was nuts.

I won't go into the reasons again, but believe me, I haven't felt this much excitement from a player since Willie Mays, on whose birthday Tim will make his major-league debut.

by sharksrog on May 5, 2007 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

not ready
I just don't think he is ready yet.

Maybe when he is able to corral all those walks and be more efficient. K'ing guys is nice and reducing hits as well. But if you can't lower the walk rates why bother? He has a long ways to go before he even reaches Ortiz level.

by pedrophile on May 4, 2007 1:42 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Corral those walks?
Pedro, you had better corral your Tim Lincecum knowledge.  Tim has had NO walks in two of his last three games.  In the other one he allowed no hits.

At this time I'd like to say I saw him throw a pen at UW on my "lunch break" when he was a freshman.  He looked about 8 years old (he has matured) and I remember thinking either I was too close, too old or too removed from my college baseball days because the kid looked to be delivering some octane.  I had no idea who I was watching at the time.  Weighing in around 127 lbs. (121 lbs. without the Seattle mist)

by Con on May 4, 2007 2:28 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

My prediction:
9 Innings
0 Hits
0 Runs
0 Walks
27 Strikeouts
82 pitches
1 Wild Pitch that somehow ends up going into left field and hitting Bonds on the knee, effectively ending his career and the pursuit of Aaron. He then becomes America's favorite player, but the Giants still have to trade him for PR sake. They send him to Seattle (where he should have gone) for Horatio Ramirez and Jeff Weaver. Lincecum and Felix are co-Cy Young Award winners for the next 15 years. Baseball is then called Lincefelix for all eternity.

I am neither an optimist, nor a pessimist. Just a realist.

A story.
An avid San Francisco Giant fan dies of a heart attack today, and misses out on Lincecum's first start. He ascends to heaven, and meets St. Peter at the Pearly Gates, who then escorts him in. The Giant fan glances over and sees a man in a Giants cap, and thinks that he's being paired up with another recently-deceased fan. Upon closer inspection, he notices that the man in the cap isn't a Giants fan, but Tim Lincecum himself. Startled, he asks St. Peter, "What is Tim Lincecum doing here? He's still alive!". St. Peter lets out a heavy sigh and says, "That's not Lincecum.  That's God.  He thinks he's Tim Lincecum."

I just noticed that they don't really have any space on the 40-man to purchase Lincecum's contract, nor do they have anyone "injured" enough to move to the 60-day DL.
