could be lincecum time
From Rotoworld:
"Giants placed RHP Russ Ortiz on the 15-game disabled list, retroactive to May 2, with elbow neuritis in his right arm."
-On Lincecum coming up-
Pros: It would be his turn in the rotation.
He is a god.
Cons: Live on ESPN (is this actually a con?)
-Ryan Howard
-Chase Utley
He's not up yet, but if he does get the call, is this is a good thing? Will he be there to stay?

Lincecum is already listed as "inactive" from the Grizzlie's site.
Prediction: ND 6ip 3hits 2er 3bb 7k
3 hits
You guys get your expectations up so high for these guys, but I can't think of a single player that's come up and instantly become a superstar - without any injuries or long stretches of ineffectiveness - since I started looking at this site three years ago. Maybe there are some, but none are coming to mind.

I like Lincecum better than Weaver; the only reason Weaver's in this thread is because he was offered as an example of a phenom who didn't suffer from either long fallow periods of injuries. I'm pointing out that Weaver DOES have injury issues, and that a chronic condition that could be delivery-related might be something you should monitor more closely on your radar screen.

This is great.
Not crap
Look, I'm sorry that I'm always the buzzkill in these threads - I understand that most of the people on this site obsess over young guys, and are therefore super-optimistic - but it goes overboard so often...
I mean, there are a half-dozen easily identifiable reasons to dislike a rookie making his first start on national television against another Grade-A young talent and a lineup with dangerous hitters, and you call it backwards crap? And more people aren't disagreeing with you?
I'm increasingly convinced that John is nearly the only person on this site capable of rationally analyzing players and situations. Most posters or diarists are either blinded by roses, or their perspective is negatively skewed - and then they cite a bunch of stats that support their pre-existing view, especially if there's a pet exotic stat that can be used (Oooh! Look at Cain's xFIP! He's terrible!)
So what? You can find damaging stats on every player. You can find positive stats for every player. Stats are interesting, but they aren't the end-all/be-all. Let's let Lincecum get some games under his belt and evaluate him at the end of the season, instead of post a bunch of worried diaries the first time he goes on a 3-game losing streak.

My take
A wild prediction? You bet. But for such a leap of faith, I have a strong conviction about this one.
Still god a hard-on for Timmy, I see

Freudian slip?
Freudian slip?
"Still god a hard-on for Timmy, I see"
There will be as much hype as Hughes Debut
My thoughts
I don't think Tim will walk three, although the four hits look about right. My best guess would be one run.
Now that's not to say that I expect Tim to pitch that way every start. But that is the type of start I would expect him to make a good deal of the time.
Even if he stays up (which I almost can't imagine that he won't), Tim probably won't reach 30 starts. But here are the predictions I made for him a few weeks ago, assuming he got called up soon enough to start 30 games:
IP -- 186
H -- 140
BB -- 75
HR -- 19
K -- 218
ERA -- 3.25
That was when I expected the Giants to keep him on a strict pitch count. Since then I have heard Brian Sabean say that Tim is comfortable throwing 135 to 140 pitches. If the Giants unleash him and his control is reasonably good, I think he could one day lead the league in innings pitched.
Some would say that was a pretty aggressive prediction for a guy with only 69 2/3 innings under his belt. But I have seen him throw 40 2/3 of those innings, and to be honest, I think they are reasonably conservative.
Is it Sunday yet?
Yes, it does
penalty strikeouts
actually
Call it a game
lol the phils would lose
well
giants would use... bonds obviously... say vizquel, winn, roberts, molina. giants lineup is actually kind of boring for this, they all strike out at pretty much the same rate.

My Prediction
Wow - that could possibly be the Apocalyse...
You're right
Nicely done
Is your basis for a good prediction...
Just so we're clear, is it "good prediction," like "I think your prediction will come true," or "good prediction," like "I like your prediction, because it makes Tim Lincecum look good, and I live to worship Tim Lincecum?"
My prediction:
5 IP
5 H
3 BB
3 ER
6 K

Get real!
Hey, you don't have to agree with my predictions. I realize they're very optimistic. But have you seen the guy pitch? I haven't really come across anyone who HAS seen him -- including his new major league teammates -- who don't think he is likely to be something special.
I don't believe his Giants teammates gave the nickname "Franchise" to Scott Munter. :)
I have enough faith in Tim that even if he gets bombed this weekend (at least during the game :) I'll still expect him to be great.
I have seen Tim pitch six of his last seven games. In those six games he has yielded a total of two runs.
Many things impress me about Tim. One that impresses me the most is that he is actually pitching BETTER in AAA this season than in Class A or the NCAA last year.
It is my belief that one day you will begrudgingly look back and say, "Well, I guess I have to admit that fool DID know what he was talking about." :)
No, you get real!
Have you ever heard of TINSTAAPP? There is no such thing as a pitching prospect. Temper your optimism. Like I said, I understand why you're excited. I would likely be ecstatic if I were a Giants' fan, and I'm disappointed that the Royals didn't take Lincecum number one overall. But come on. You're predicting Tim Lincecum to have a Hall of Fame career based on 7 starts in AAA?
It is my belief that one day you will sink into a suicidal depression after 5'10" max-effort Lincecum blows out his arm. Yeah, the arm that he never needs to ice, that allows him to throw 140+ pitches per start and throw long toss the next day. That arm.
In all seriousness, I don't know if that will happen or if it won't. All I know is that Lincecum has yet to make a major league start, and, until he does, he's not God. He's not even a Hall of Famer. They don't vote you in based on 7 starts in AAA.
by ajohnst1 on May 4, 2007 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions
I understand what you're saying.
I won't go into the reasons again, but believe me, I haven't felt this much excitement from a player since Willie Mays, on whose birthday Tim will make his major-league debut.
not ready
Maybe when he is able to corral all those walks and be more efficient. K'ing guys is nice and reducing hits as well. But if you can't lower the walk rates why bother? He has a long ways to go before he even reaches Ortiz level.
Corral those walks?
hahaha
Hahahaha
because ...
He has landed....
131 pitches...blows out elbow in next game.

5.7IP 4H 4BB 2ER 7K
My prediction:
0 Hits
0 Runs
0 Walks
27 Strikeouts
82 pitches
1 Wild Pitch that somehow ends up going into left field and hitting Bonds on the knee, effectively ending his career and the pursuit of Aaron. He then becomes America's favorite player, but the Giants still have to trade him for PR sake. They send him to Seattle (where he should have gone) for Horatio Ramirez and Jeff Weaver. Lincecum and Felix are co-Cy Young Award winners for the next 15 years. Baseball is then called Lincefelix for all eternity.
I am neither an optimist, nor a pessimist. Just a realist.

1 H
0 ER
1 BB
4 K
In the middle of the 3rd SharksRog runs onto the field naked and tries to hug "Timmy", Lincecum runs away and severely pulls his hammy (not his timmy). He is able to make his next start. Alas, the emotional scars never fully heal.
This is the best prediction I've seen so far
