Community prospect Report 5/25

No one has started one today so I thought I would.  The Rays affiliates have a couple of intriguing pitching match-ups tonight.

Niemann vs. Slowey

McGee vs. Kennedy

So what else is going on in the world of minor league baseball tonight??

Correction from last night
McLemore was mainly 78-88 w a 92 thrown in there for Houston last night. Still a solid debut for a team that could certainly use (among other things) a 2nd lefty in the pen to complement Trever Miller.

Other note: Pittsburgh CF/leadoff situation- saw where Nyjer Morgan is out 2-3 months w a torn ligament in his thumb or something, so that leaves Rajai Davis, he of the .300+, 23 or so SB in AAA to supplant the mediocre Duffy/McLouth combo once Pitt tires of them

Getting boring.
Just dominating. If he does this throughout June I think the Brewers have to challenge him at AA this season. I really like him and hope he does keep this up.

Joey Votto is 2-4
is anyone as hot as he is in the month of May? He is on fire.

Votto
Why is he even in the minors anymore? The Reds are struggling and he is blocked by Scott Hatteburg. Makes no sense to me. The guy is raking.

reds
seems like the current team has an air of losing about them and i've heard management doesn't want guys like bailey, votto, bruce, etc. anywhere near it. i could see a bigtime firesale this july before any of the cincy prospects even sniff a callup.

by robcast23 on May 25, 2007 11:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

That makes sense.
I remember hearing Torii Hunter attribute some of the Twins success to the fact a core group from their team ventured through the minors together. He said after experiencing winning at every level in the minors they just expected to win in the majors. Success breeds success (ask the Braves.)

If the morale in Cincy is bad (which it well may be) then kudos to the Reds for looking out for the best interests of the organization and their prospects.

It would not shock me at all to see a firesale in Cincinnati this summer, starting with Dunn.

by bl on May 26, 2007 12:02 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

That seems like...
...a dumb justification. The real reason should be that the Reds are the worst team in baseball (no, really) and there is no point for even allowing the slightest chance of their prospects struggling and service time considerations being in a small market.
I would personally like to thank Dave Littlefield for banishing the ghost of Scott Kazmir from Shea Stadium.

by uga007 on May 26, 2007 1:49 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Regardless of everything
We can be almost sure that Dunn will not be in Cincy next year. And I don't expect Griffey back either.

As far as pitching goes, Loshe and Milton both are up at the end of the year, they won't be back

Connie, Valentin, Hatteberg, and Saarloos all are up at the end of the year, I don't see them coming back

Overall, that would mean Cincy would lose atleast 5 position players, 3 of those being starters as well as 2 SPs. That's atleast, if Cincy does something at the trade deadline, that number will increase. And I didn't mention Encarnacion

The duel is over and the winner is....Slowey!!

Here are the lines:

So am I....
I know a lot of people feel he will turn into a Brad Radke type of pitcher, which is definately not a bad thing.  Though I have a gut feeling that he will be a slightly better pitcher then that, hopefully I am right cause I love the kid.

Liriano
I think is far from done. TJ has pretty much become a routine procedure. It will take some time, but he'll come back strong. I read a BP article the other day (cannot remember who) saying if he was Liriano's publicist he'd write TJ off as a way to keep his pitch count down. Obviously a joke, but serves a point, TJ is by no means the end of a pitcher's career.

Longoria
He's cooled off in the last week.  He was 0-2 w/ 2BB's tonight.

His BB/K ratio is now 30/29.  His IsoD is now .125.  I'm really impressed by his plate discipline this year.  I knew his power was for real, but he's proved to me at least he's truly a complete hitter.

If Rocco can get and stay healthy, it wouldn't surprise me if he was the starting 3B for the Rays by the trading deadline.  The Rays seem to believe that Upton is the CF of the future and Akinori Iwamura profiles well as a 2B.

he just hit a granny, like he did in his 1st ML AB. Def showing signs of life

On a side note, the Astros continue to get the tar beat out of them. And watching Eric Byrnes play baseball is just downright fun; all out, all the time. One of my fav players ever since I saw him play in the minors- the whole town of Sacramento absolutely loved him

Check out his April and May splits.

He's got an OPS above 1100 in May, his strikeout rate has been cut in half from April to May, his walk rate has doubled, and he's showing the power he had last year.

I think it's safe to say he'll be fine.

Brewers need Gallardo
Bush got rocked tonight and the Brewers are looking very poor right now.  I think the Cubs could catch them.

by Bravesin07 on May 25, 2007 11:54 PM EDT   0 recs

Gallardo
While the Brewers could definitely use Gallardo, Gallardo's line would have looked a lot like Bush's line given the same poor defense and umpire's calls that Bush got tonight.  Dude has to be the unluckiest pitcher in baseball right now.

by b1leper on May 26, 2007 12:02 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Bush.
What's up with Bush? He was on many people's short list of sleepers this season. Thus far he has been pretty bad.

Granted the sample size is relatively small, but a 6.00 + ERA and OBA over .300 in 60+ IP is just bad.

Fernando Martinez...
1-3, HBP, R, RBI. Hitting .309...

Gomez may have his stay in the bigs extended now too. Shawn Green broke a bone in his toe on a foul ball tonight and will be out at least for the weekend. Alou should be back by Tuesday, but Gomez will at least get to see some RHP before then...

by MetfanBren on May 26, 2007 12:06 AM EDT   0 recs

Please...
do not rush Gomez. I like the idea of rewarding him by letting him get his feet wet. But he is not ready, he needs at least a full season of AAA. Please Omar, do not rush this talented kid.

by bl on May 26, 2007 12:09 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I still think they will send him down
Ben Johnson is back and hitting good.  I think Gomez plays this weekend and goes back down.  He had a good AB tonight even though he popped up.

by Bravesin07 on May 26, 2007 12:13 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

He's not up to play full time...
...this is the role he will be playing if he is on the postseason roster (pinch running, defensive replacement, pinch hitting against LHP), so it can't hurt to give him some practice since he has probably never been a bench player in his life.

Besides, a few ABs to figure out what to work on can't hurt either. Omar is really a smart guy who will not rush Gomez like Steve Phillips rushed Reyes.

I would personally like to thank Dave Littlefield for banishing the ghost of Scott Kazmir from Shea Stadium.

by uga007 on May 26, 2007 1:59 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

well
thats because reyes is pure greatness. if you'll remember he struggled quite a bit with plate discipline as well as health issues in his first couple of seasons, both things that can be attributed to being rushed

by robcast23 on May 26, 2007 9:55 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Wow...
...you are a complete douche bag. Did you not see ANY of 2004, 2005 and the first 2 months of 2006 when he was completely over matched? If he been allowed to develop he wouldn't have been a replacement-level player for 2 seasons and we would've seen this much sooner...there is NO credible arguement to say that Reyes wasn't rushed...dick.

Of course he was rushed, but Reyes is on another level of talent that he could overcome it.

I would personally like to thank Dave Littlefield for banishing the ghost of Scott Kazmir from Shea Stadium.

by uga007 on May 26, 2007 12:08 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Let's be civil here
Sorry if my sarcasm was offensive to you, but I was merely pointing out that Reyes' rushing didn't impact his career, as he's a great shortstop already at the age of 23. I never said that he wasn't rushed. In fact, one could say that his rushing allowed him to become so great so soon (look at his impressive age 23 season in 2006).  It is also likely that his hamstring problems led to his struggles in '04 and '05 (although his 2005 season was still damn good for a 22 year-old).  You yourself said that he was on another level of talent that he was able to overcome being rushed, so doesn't that kind of make my point for me?  He was so talented he needed to be challenged at a higher level?  Besides, even with his struggles (which are common to all young players), did the Mets have anyone that would have been better than Reyes at short when he was a "replacement-level" player.  I think they probably couldn't, and I would gladly take a .273 average, 60 steals, and great defense from my replacement-level players anyday.

Cincy was scouting Gomez
I guess I heard on TV that a scout timed Gomez from home to first in 3.9 seconds.  Hmmm I wonder if the Mets would trade Gomez and Pelfrey for Arroyo and Brandon Phillips.  The Reds would have a fine outfield in two years if that trade happens.

Indians' Overview!
Hello everyone,

Indians beat the Tigers 7-4; Martinez, Blake, and Barfield all with HRs; Michaels robbed Monroe of one HR, though Monroe hit one later.  Byrd with a QS - 6 IP, 3 ER, 0 BB - hasn't walked a batter in 37.0 IP.  He's now 5-1 with a 3.81 ERA.  In fact, he threw 60 strikes, 13 balls in tonight's game - unbelieveable control!  This is more the Paul Byrd the Indians were expecting when they signed him before the 2006 season.  Nice to see him come around for the Indians.

Onto the Minors:

AAA Buffalo - lost to Louisville (CIN) 10-1:

RF Franklin Gutierrez - 1-4, 1 K (.340)
CF Ben Francisco - 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 GIDP (.340 - still matching Gutierrez in the BA department.  :-)
1B Ryan Mulhern - 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 SF (.315)
LF Brad Snyder - 1-4, 1 K (.281)

LHP Rafael Perez - L (3-3) - 4.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 WP; 5 G/6 F; 52 S/23 B (3.66 - didn't seem to have good command tonight, though his control - S/B - was good.)
RHP Jake Dittler - 2.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 K; 5 G/1 F; 29 S/11 B; 1/1 IR scored (5.68 - similar to Perez - good control, but not good command.)
RHP Jim Ed Warden - 1.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HR (3-run); 1 G/2 F; 23 S/18 B; 2/2 IR scored (7.59 - didn't have good control or command; has really faltered after a strong start to 2007.)

Louisville:
1B Joey Votto - 3-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 K (.319)
3B Earl Snyder - 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 E (3-throw) (.181 - part of the Alomar/Escobar trade back in 2002.)

LHP Mike Gosling - W (3-2) - 6.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 K; 15 G/4 F; 66 S/32 B (2.94 - another solid outing for former 2nd-Rd. 2001 Diamondbacks pick out of Stanford who is now 26-YO.)
RHP Todd Coffey - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 WP; 20 S/11 B (0.00 - rehab?  I'm not sure.)

AA Akron - lost to Erie (DET) 5-1 (there was a 1 hr. 18 min. rain delay

SS Asdrubal Cabrera - 1-5, 1 R, 1 SB (13-2nd; 13/13 in steals.) (.318)
1B Jordan Brown - 3-4, 1 K (.311)
DH Brian Barton - 1-4, 2 K (.275)
LF Ryan Goleski - 1-2, 2 BB (.258 - threw out a runner at 3rd.)
RF Trevor Crowe - 0-4, 1 K, 1 SB (6-2nd) (.173)

RHP J.D. Martin - 2.2 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 3 K; 3 G/2 F (4.25 - I'm guessing either the rains came after 2.2 IP OR Martin was injured, though I have not heard anything to that effect at this point.)
RHP Nick Pesco - 3.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HB; 1 G/4 F; 0/3 IR scored (5.40)
LHP Mariano Gomez - 0.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K (4.50)
RHP Jensen Lewis - 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 WP; 3 G/1 F; 3/3 IR scored (2.10 - K rate was impressive again, but the first hit given up by him tonight was very costly, a 3-run RBI double by Jackson Melian, allowing all 3 IR to score.)

Erie:
2B Michael Hollimon - 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K (.243)
3B Kody Kirtland - 1-3, 1 2B, 3 K, 1 E (11-throw) (.255)
DH Jackson Melian - 2-2, 1 BB, 1 CS (5-2nd) (.304 - the former Yankee prospect mentioned in a recent thread on here.)

RHP Jair Jurrjens - 7.0 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 1 WP; 9 G/6 F (3.02 - another solid start to this point for the undrafted 21-YO FA out of the Netherlands, signed by the Tigers in May 2003.)

High-A Kinston - split a DH with Winston-Salem (CHW,) losing Game 1 2-1 in 7 innings, winning Game 2 5-2 in 6.5 innings:

Game 1:
CF Jose Constanza - 0-1, 2 BB (.252)
1B Michael Aubrey - 0-3 (.353)
RF Nathan Panther - 1-2, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI (.237 - 6-12 over his last 4 games w/ 1 HR, 3 RBI.)
SS Josh Rodriguez - 1-2, 1 K, 1 PO (1st) (.217)

RHP Frank Herrmann - L (3-1) - 7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB (IBB,) 5 K, 1 HR (solo); 6 G/9 F (2.56 - tough-luck loss, but the 23-YO undrafted FA out of Harvard pitched very well again.)

Game 2:
CF Jose Constanza - 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB (10-2nd)
2B Chris De La Cruz - 2-4, 1 2B, 3 RBI (.306)
DH Michael Aubrey - 0-3, 2 K (.300)
1B Stephen Head - 1-3, 2 K (.247)
LF John Drennen - 2-2, 1 R, 1 SB (2-2nd,) 1 HBP (.251)
SS Josh Rodriguez - 3-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB (8-2nd) (.227 - might he finally be getting comfortable at High-A?)

LHP Dan Cevette - 4.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 2 HR (solos); 3 G/1 F (3.97 - the HRs given up weren't good, but the high K numbers were very good for the 23-YO 3rd-Rd. 2002 HS pick out of Elkland, PA.)
RHP Erik Stiller - 2.0 IP, 2 H; 2 G/4 F (0.00 - first appearance of 2007 for the undrafted FA from Princeton University signed by the Indians in 2006.)

Low-A Lake County - defeated Lakewood (PHI) 12-9:

CF Jason Denham - 2-5, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB (.310 - at this rate, he might reach High-A by the ASB.)
3B Adam Davis - 2-6, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI (.239 - like his former Florida teammate, Josh Rodriguez, is Davis finally starting to get comfortable at Low-A?)
2B Jared Goedert - 3-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 1 CS (1-2nd,) 1 HBP (.359 - also helped to turn a 6-4-3 DP and has made only 1 E in 6 G at 2B; if Goedert can stay at 2nd base and hit like this, the Indians could have a nice blue-chip prospect on their hands!)

1B Matt Whitney - 1-3, 1 2B, 3 BB, 1 K (.318 - the plate discipline is nice to see.)
C Matthew McBride - 1-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB (.300 - along with Tomlin, gave up 2 more SBs, though the players who got them had 18 and 12 before tonight's steals, respectively.)
DH Roman Pena - 0-4, 1 BB, 1 K (.259)
SS Carlos Rivero - 1-5, 1 R, 2 K (.267)
LF Nick Weglarz - 2-4, 3 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K (.233)
RF Cirillo Cumberbatch - 1-4, 2 R, 1 K (.409)

RHP Josh Tomlin - W (4-0) - 5.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 1 HB; 5 G/9 F (2.68 - solid outing for a spot start, though he seems more dominant in the bullpen, SSS understood.)
RHP Paolo Espino - 1.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 K, 1 HR (2-run); 1 G/2 F (5.34)
RHP Cody Bunkelman - H (2) - 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HB; 3 G/1 F; 1/2 IR scored (5.61 - control and command continue to be issues with him.)
RHP Neil Wagner - S (6) - 0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 K, 1 WP; 1 F; 2/3 IR scored (2.79)

Lakewood:
2B Adrian Cardenas - 2-5, 1 R, 1 K (.267)
3B C.J. Henry - 1-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI (.200 - former Yankee prospect traded in the Abreu deal; 38 G, 130 AB, 6 HR, 26 RBI, 8 BB/50 K, 9 SB/0 CS, .200/.264/.431.)

JD Martin
Martin left the game with soreness in his right elbow.  Not a good sign considering it is the same elbow which has already caused him to lose nearly two years of development.  Sounds much like what shut him down last fall.

Thanks for the info. - I was not aware of that!
Hello sdtribefan,

Greatly appreciate the info. - I passed it along to LGT, as I don't think anyone had reported that.  Thanks!  :-)

Speaking of Indians' prospects who have injuries, RHP Adam Miller is having an additional MRI done on his middle finger (NOT his elbow); it sounds like he won't be back very soon as he was still experiencing discomfort in that middle finger when he threw a bullpen session recently.

Referring back to Martin, I wondered if AA hitters were just finally figuring him out or if he had some sort of injury concern, since his performance of late hasn't been nearly as good as his first several starts, and even the start before last night where he went something like 7.0 IP and 1 ER, he only struck out something like 1-2 batters, far lower than he was doing earlier this season.  Also, Martin had already handled AA before TJ surgery, so it seemed he was picking up from where he left off at the start of the season, but all of a sudden, his performance just slipped, worse than ever before at AA, so I wondered if there was an injury problem, he just lost his good command, or if he lost something on his fastball.  Maybe this injury had something to do with that, but was only found out about last night.

Again, thanks for the info. - greatly appreciated!  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

An additional note about Miller's finger injury!
Hello everyone,

You can see more info. about Miller's finger injury here.  According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Miller originally injured his middle finger in his May 12 start.  According to Lonnie Soloff, Indians' Athletic Director/Trainer, Miller has a strained flexor tendon in his middle finger (let's hope he doesn't have to have surgery on it like Detroit's Joel Zumaya did.)

Take care and have a great day!

Goedert
He's 22 in low A ball.  Why the hell won't the Indians bump him AT LEAST one level?

He should be in AA by the end of the year.

well
the answer is, cause they've had wes hodges, their #2 pick from last year, playing third at the next level up.  this is probably one of the major reasons why they're trying goedert at 2B.  if and when he settles in there i'm expecting them to move him up.

Wily Mo is correct - Hodges is blocking him at
3rd at High-A Kinston.

Hello Curtis Pride,

That's the main reason Goedert is playing at 2B right now (and has only made 1 E in 6 G, even helping to turn a 6-4-3 DP last night, so the early returns so far seem pretty good from what I can tell, and his bat for the most part has not been affected.)

Some of us over at LGT thought that Goedert might be jumped up to AA Akron directly from Low-A Lake County, but GM Mark Shapiro specifically mentioned about getting Goedert up to High-A Kinston as soon as possible, so it sounds like skipping a level is not in the cards for Goedert at this point.

As mentioned, Hodges is at 3B at High-A Kinston, and most would rate his 3B defense better than Goedert.  In addition, Hodges is a worthwhile prospect (only 22-YO,) and is really not ready to jump to AA Akron himself - stats; his BB/K ratio is improving, 11/29, but still needs some work before he's ready for AA.

Therefore, instead of having Goedert jump directly to AA, rushing Hodges to AA, or having them split time at 3B, the Indians have decided to try Goedert at 2B, I think partly because, if I'm correct, he did play some 2B at KSU before he was shifted to 3B in his senior season.  So far, the results are promising - if Goedert can play there and hit like that, the Indians will have a blue-chip prospect added to their system.

Like Wily Mo, I suspect Goedert will be up to High-A Kinston shortly after Goedert gets some more 2B reps in a league where he has definitely shown he can hit - Goedert can concentrate more on his 2B defense until he's ready to move up to the High-A Carolina League, where he'll likely be tested more than he was in the South Atlantic League - at that point, Goedert won't be able to concentrate all or most of his attention on his 2B defense like he is able to right now at Low-A Lake County.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

Astros feed on mlb.tv:

play by play guy: "Elijah Dukes has been out of the lineup due to off-field difficulties the last couple of days."

color guy: "Yeah, he threatened to whack his ex-wife."

It was like a scene out of Major League w Bob Uecker. Great!

Marrero
Walk off Homer, number 12 on the year.  I wouldn't be shocked if he hits around 30 this year.

Wow.
Marrero is impressing me.

Thats really odd about Hernandez and Meche. Both had the same reason for leaving the game? Hmm.

I wonder how often that's happened - two
pitchers leaving the same game for the same reason (and on top of that, in the same inning, no less)?

Im not giving up on Edgardo baez
I knew he was raw, so it would take time...

but 2-2 tonight, 2B, HR, 2 BB...avg. up to .264 in the Carolina league.

perhaps Marrero will be promoted soon, and maybe thatll give him someone to play with/move through the system with...

Giants Report
Fresno defeated SLC 6-1.

Brian Horwitz- 4 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .538.  Small sample size in AAA, but expect him to rake in the PCL.  Test will be if he can hit for any kind of power at all.  Even doubles power would be welcome.

Trenton outlasted CT 1-0 in 11 innnings.

Alex HInshaw- 3.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K.  ERA= 1.71 Must still be on a low pitch count.  Watch out for this guy if he can maintain any semblance of control.

Osiros Matos- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 1.99.  Matos is an emerging beast.

SJ topped Modesto 4-2.

Paul Osequera- 6.1 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 1 K, GO/AO=12/4

Lexington blasted Augusta 10-4.

Ryan Rohlinger- 3 for 4, 2 2B, HR(3).  BA= .225.  This might be Rohlinger's best game of the year.  He needs more of these and less 0'fers.

Ben Snyder- 3 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 2 ER, 3 BB 2 K.  Probably Snyders worst start as a pro despite the low ER.

Dan Griffin- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, GO/AO= 8/2.  Griffin should be able to use his height to get a downward plane on the ball.

Troy Patton
8 IP, 1ER, 3H, 3BB, 2K, 0HR.

Nice to see him throwing deeper into games...looks like it came at the expense of strikeouts.
