Anibal Sanchez -- dreadful

Has anyone seen Anibal Sanchez pitch this year? I'm curious if he's looked as bad as his stats. Didn't get out of the 4th today against the Mets.

Yes, it's a small sample size, but clearly seems to be something going on, is the offseason shoulder soreness still there?

2006 (114+ IP, 17 starts) vs 2007 (30 IP, 6 starts)

  1. 7.1 h/9, 3.6 bb/9, 5.7 k/9
  2. 12.9 h/9, 5.7 bb/9, 4.2 k/9
Anyone seen him pitch that might have some insight?

Gotta be hurt
he has no location this year.

location, location, location.
Just speaking about today; he seemed to get worse after taking a line drive off the knee. But even before then he was very inconsistent. His stuff moved well in general, but every two or three pitches would end up nowhere near the catcher's target.

Lapses in concentration
I also forgot to mention he made one of the more embarrassing mistakes a pitcher can make when he tried to pick off a runner at first base with nobody covering. I don't know if you should read too much into that one instance, but I do tend to wonder why a pitcher is distracted when those kind of mental mistakes are made.

pickoff
Yeah, I was wondering about that too - I was following the game online, and saw it happened when he tried to pick off the opposing pitcher (Ollie Perez) which seemed a little weird.

That pickoff....
... was ridiculous. He doesnt need to hold Ollie close. I dont know what he was thinking.

Also to add however, Sanchez did take a line drive off his kneecap early today and it very likely affected him a bit.

Just a thought.

babip
Sanchez was lucky last year.  The low ERA and the no-no have made him one of the more overrated pitchers in baseball.  His BABIP was .230 in 2006.

The ERA on 4.39 is likely more in-line with his true talent.

Whatever dude
He was great last year. hes not the same guy so far. Hes a tough pitcher. I like him a lot. The no-hitter wasn't any luckier than average. Less so, i believe.

I like him too
I saw him pitch in Maine before he was traded to FLA.
All I'm telling you is that people might be expecting too much of him after his extraordinary (and somewhat lucky) 2006 campaign.

I think he'll be an above-average MLB starter. What I'm saying is: don't jump out the window when he doesn't turn into Pedro Martinez.

context
I think we can all agree he's a good pitcher, but what he's saying is that you shouldn't expect a 10-3 record with a 2.83 ERA again unless Sanchez makes some substantial improvements. He was fortunate that more of his batted balls allowed were not hits last year.

Now, he was improving in some respects as the season progressed last year, but his 2007 season certainly looks like a step in the wrong direction.

AAA
he was sent to AAA Albuquerque and the Marlins re-instated Jorge Julio off the DL

huh
Wasn't expecting that. Well, maybe he can work out his issues there, whether injury or mechanical or otherwise.
