Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

MOD: Marlins

Hello, this is my first year doing the mock draft on here, but I'm confident that I will do a good job given my knowledge. I will use this thread as an open forum, where anyone who cares enough can evaluate, critize and discuss the draft agenda of the fish.

Let's get started.

The Marlins have five picks to work with

12, 77, 107, 137, and 167.

My plan is like this. I'm looking to take the best player availible at all times, I've seen teams plan around their depth charts in the past, and it rarely works out well, so at all times I'm taking the best player availible.

Furthermore, money is not an issue at this point. We have one of the lowest salaries in the league and we have the freedom to spend money on Boras clients if need be.

Here's what I'm working with in no paticular order

Ross Detwiler
Daniel Moskos
Matt Harvey
Matt Dominguez
Jarrod Parker
Todd Frazier
Kevin Ahrens
Madison Bumgarner
Phillipe Aumont
Blake Beavan
Michael Main
Jason Heyward
and Beau Mills

Personally, I like all the hitters in that group, Beau's "attidude problem" doesn't worry me. I love both Frazier's and Ahrens' bats. Dominguez I like a lot. I feel like Harvey, Detwiler and probably Moskos won't be on the board when 12 comes up, but that doesn't worry me too much.

I like Phillipe Aumont a lot, I can't explain why but I do. I also like Main, as far as pitchers go. I'm starting to shy away from Madison and Jarrod cause I'm a little worried bout their secondary stuff, although they have been very effective with the fastball. I love all the hitters in that pool.

That being said who do you guys think I should take here?

(I'll wait for responses before moving on to other picks)

Sounds good
I like the strategy of taking BPA. Not a fan of Dominguez, he just doesn't "wow" me with any one skill. I'd love to see a guy like Matt Harvey or Jason Heyward fall. I've heard the Marlins really like Justin Jackson, but at this point he is probably a stretch, though I'm not sure why he went from top three HS guy to out of the first round, his numbers are still great.

Michael Main has some exciting tools on both the mound and field, he would be a fun prospect to follow.

justin jackson
i don't understand it either.  he was ranked the top position player in this high school class for a while and was considered a first rounder coming into this year with a chance to move up the boards if he had a good spring.  all he has done this spring is hit .515 with 12 doubles, 5 triples, 11 homers, gone 21 for 21 in stolen base attempts, and has only struck out 6 times.  he is actually pretty close to what cameron maybin did at the same high school 2 years ago except for average.  maybin hit .646 with 11 doubles, 1 triple, 14 homers, and 27 steals.  now i know high school statistics are a terrible judge of talent, but i don't see how one of those 2 is considered the 3rd best player in his draft class and the other is considered a possible 2nd rounder.  what other shortstop in this class is going to give you his power/speed combo and he is also considered to be a very good defender.

Jackson
Yeah, up until about 2-3 months ago, he was considered just about a lock to be a top 10 pick and now It seems like he fall out of the 1st round and I just don't understand why?

I agree
with everything you said. I feel like Justin might be a tad much of a reach. I really like the cold weather pitchers like Harvey and Aumont. and I love Jason's bat.

Thinking about it, I like Dominguez the least of the 5 hitters I mentioned. I love Frazier's and Ahrens' power, and Beau's bat is obviously outstanding. IDK where I'd go if I didn't have Phillipe, Harvey, and Heyward on the board. That's why I'm debating between Jason, Beau, Frazier, Kevin, and Main

Well...
Assuming Harvey, Aumonte and Heyward(those are the three I want too) are gone like I  expect them to be, I'd personally rank them like this: Blake Beaven, Michael Main,Beau Mills then Kevin Ahrens. I really don't like Frazier that much and would even put LaPorta above him.

You don't seem as high on Beaven as am I am, why is that?

Meh
I can't really say I don't like Blake. I do. That being said, I like a lot of the hitters in this spot over Blake. He never really seemed to wow me. Not outstanding velocity on the fastball, although that's only in comparison to guys like Aumonte and Main. That being said, I've heard very good things about him. I guess it's not really that I don't like him, but I feel a lot more comfortable taking one of the hitters or Main here.

The 12th is likely too early...
but Julio Borbon might fit a need for the Marlins in CF and coming out of the UT he'd be on the fast track. Just a thought.

Anyways, it would be great for the Marlins if Moustakas feel to 12 imo.

Madison Bumgarner
What about Madison Bumgarner? A LHP who throws 95. Any love for him?

by FishHead on May 17, 2007 10:32 AM EDT reply actions

Not really
He doesn't have any secondary pitches at all. At all. He only started throwing a curve last year, because of his father. That worries me.

worry?
i think its great that his father wouldn't let him throw a curve until he was 16.  they always say your elbow isn't fully developed until around 16 and that you shouldn't throw breaking balls until then.  of course you can never tell who will get hurt, but his arm should be in great shape.  i don't see how not having much of a breaking ball is that big of a deal anyway.  a lot of times the team changes breaking balls with high school pitchers anyway like making them switch from a slider to a curve or something like that.
