Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

MOD: Mariners

Who should we pick in the first round? Help me out, M's fans!

Star-divide

Alright M's fans - help me out. The Mariners have the following picks in the draft: 11, 52, 76, 106, 136, & 166.

Let's start out by discussing our first-round pick. At #11, there are some guys we can expect to be off the board: Price, Wieters, Vitters, & Porcello won't be available for the M's. So, let's talk about who the M's could take in the first round.

Mike Moustakas
Ross Detwiler
Daniel Moskos
Matt Harvey
Jarrod Parker
Jason Heyward
Madison Bumgarner
Phillippe Aumont
Matt Dominguez
Beau Mills
Josh Smoker
Matt LaPorta

One of these players will be available. Obviously, we want the best player available, so our job is to discuss these players and determine how we would rank them. So, try and find as much information as possible about these players and let me know what you think.

You can contact me any time with draft thoughts.

Found some video
I found some video on some of the top guys

http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/events/draft_report/y2007/index.jsp?mc=LASTNAME

use that URL and type in the last name of the player you want to see where it says LASTNAME. You'll find scouting reports for a lot of the top guys and video for some of them.

Haha
oooor...there's a drop down box that I didn't see the first time. Use that instead.

Hmm..
Will a lot of those guys be there? I have a hunch Detwiler, in particular might be gone. I'd be looking for the Mariners to draft an impact bat. Mills could be a nice fit at 11...

As a Mariner fan....
is it possible to draft a General Manager? Maybe some SEC school's Athletic Director may be there. Good upside, and hopefully no signability issues? As long as he has been at the school three years, there is no problem I think.

Honestly though, I would like to see more high ceiling pitchers drafted. Our infield looks pretty set for the next few years, so we don't need any college infield bats. Could use some projectable high school bats for the outfield though. Ichiro isn't young, and we need to plan for about three years down the road. Players to team up with Adam Jones and whomever else we have out there (given up on Jeremy Reed now). Power corner outfielders is what I would like with some high risk-high reward pitchers.

About half of them will be available at pick #11.

If you figure Price, Wieters, Vitters & Porcello will definitely be gone, that leaves the list I gave + Andrew Brackman (who I don't like much) as the top available players.

My reviews
in backwards order

LaPorta: not what we need, we don't need any more RH hitters in our system, especially one already limited on the defensive side. Also, I'm not a big fan of how his bat will translate to professional ball.

Smoker: nothing special

Mills: Like him, like the pedigree, might not stick at 3B, but perhaps could move to COF before 1B.

Dominguez: total pass. He's got nothing over Mills and his bat action seems prone to exploitation from breaking pitches.

Aumont: Love his stuff, but he's incredibly raw, lacking command, might have some of the highest upside, but I'd be looking for something a little safer with the 11th overall.

Bumgarner: Also pretty raw given his lack of secondary pitches. He's got some arm mechanics that need to be changed (his reach back) but other than that, looks ok.

Heyward: Great fit for the team with plus power potential from the left-side. When one of your weaknesses is listed as "might be too patient", you know this is a guy the Ms need.

Parker: good stuff, good motion, i like him overall.

Harvey: good later pick, I wouldn't take him at 11, but would at 52 in a heartbeat. He wont last to there though.

Moskos: future reliever.

Detweiler: I can see why many people like him, but I am not as enthused. Can he put muscle onto his frame? His lower body mechanics need some work.

Moustakas: Like him, not much else to say, good bat from the left side, has some defensive value, incidentally, I rather like his pitching motion too.

Draft Preference:
Heyward
--small gap--
Mills
LaPorta
Parker
Moustakas
Harvey
Detweiler
--tiny gap--
Aumont
Bumgarner
--gap--
Smoker
--gap--
Moskos
Dominguez

Thanks!
Thanks Matthew!

Unfortunately, I don't think Heyward, Harvey, Moustakas, Detwiler or Mills will be available...

That leaves us to possibly choose from the following:

Jarrod Parker
Madison Bumgarner
Matt LaPorta
Phillippe Aumont
Matt Dominguez
Daniel Moskos
Josh Smoker

At this point, I think I'm leaning toward one of the HS arms: Parker, Bumgarner or Aumont. Probably in that order, although Parker & Bumgarner are close for me, right now.

Here's how I think those three rank in the following categories:

Size: Aumont, Bumgarner, Parker
Fastball: Parker, Aumont, Bumgarner
Comand: Parker, Bumgarner, Aumont
Secondary: Aumont, Parker, Bumgarner
Mechanics: Parker, Bumgarner, Aumont
Makeup / Other: Bumgarner, Parker, Aumont

The makeup/other rankings can be explained by this:
Bumgarner first, because he's a lefty and because, while his secondary stuff lags behind, it's because his dad didn't let him throw it until last year (which I think is a good thing for the health of his arm). Parker and Aumont are probably interchangable.

If you give 3 points for first, 2 for second and 1 for last, here's how those three guys rank...

Parker: 14
Bumgarner: 11
Aumont: 11

Yeah - looks about right...
