Andrew Miller to start Friday vs St. Louis

"BOSTON -- Tigers manager Jim Leyland said today that the Tigers are putting pitcher Jeremy Bonderman on the disabled list and will recall left-hander Andrew Miller to start in his place Friday night against St. Louis at Comerica Park.

Leyland said that Miller will stay in the rotation as long as Bonderman is unavailable, but the plan is to send him back to the minors once Bonderman returns."

not sure
i'm not really sure what to think,
i wouldn't be surprised if he has a pretty good start, but i still don't think he is necessarily "ready"

one thing to remember
the cardinals absolutely suck against lefties and they also suck against pitchers they've never seen before.  that bodes very well for miller.  another thing, being a lefty might get chris duncan, the cardinals best hitter so far this year, out of the lineup.

"chris duncan, the cardinals best hitter so far this year"

whoa.

I know it's been true, but ...just, whoa!

good points
in my mind he's one of those young guys who could have success mixed with some blow-ups, not overly polished but not completely raw.

he's going to be facing looper, i think,
would be nice to see detroit get a few runs early.

wow is right
but if you're going to give a top prospect his first MLB start as an injury fill-in, there are worse times to do it than at home vs the 29th-best offense in baseball.

The right move....
Just like the Tigers did with Verlander a couple years back, they are giving their young rocket arms a chance to pitch when the team needs them. With Verlander, it was in late season double headers, and with Miller it's as an injury replacement. They are already paying him big league money, might as well get some big league production out of it. I don't think this will hurt his progress at all, in fact it may help it. He has traveled with the big league squad before, might be nice to remind him of how nice it can be to keep his eyes on the prize.

wow
I'm excited to see Miller throw!  He looked like he had great stuff at the end of last year, but was really nervous as to where it was going.

Talent
Leyland has said many times in the past, he'll take the guy with talent.  He did this last year with Zumaya and Verlander, despite some skepticism out there.  Of all the options, Miller is the most talented.

The options:
Ledezma: I think he'd be ok as a temp fill in.  However he would take an arm away from a weakened bullpen (we called up Tim freaking Byrdak).  I also don't have confidence that he'd go very deep into a game right now.
Miner: He's been mostly bad this year.  Been better his last couple of outings.  He also started to get crushed after he got around the league a bit last season after some early success.
Vasquez: not eligible to be recalled since he was just sent down.  Didn't exactly have a stellar debut.
Trahern: still very young and only one game of experience above AA.  Not on the 40 man roster.  No reason to rush him yet anyways.
Jurrjens: not ready and not quite as talented as Miller. And not on 40 man roster.
Bazardo: No thanks.
Grilli: Uhhhh, nooooo

No telling how Miller'll do, but I'd say he'd do at least as good as any of the team's other options.  Hopefully, Bonderman's blister doesn't become a bigger problem than it already is.
