Minor League Report 5/12

Adam Miller vs. Matt Garza today.  Both pitched well with Garza getting the best and the win by going 7ip 5h 2w 6k, while Miller goes 7ip 9h 3r 2er 1w 2k.
Anything else we want to watch for today or tonight?  Any "sleepers" that anyone is keeping a particular eye on?

Well, arguably Miller pitched better than Garza because he showed better control today.

But he had 10 more GOs than Garza!
Hello jrose643,

I think mrkupe makes a good point - Miller threw the same number of strikes as Garza did in 14 fewer pitches (68 of 95 compared to 68 of 109 for Garza.)  Garza also threw a WP and had a HB as well.  In addition, as I mentioned in my report, I think Miller dominated more via the GO rather than the KO today, as 17 is a very high number (3 more than Andrew Miller had at AA for Erie in 8 IP; Adam had 17 in 7 IP.)

I don't know if Rochester had a plan of hitting Adam early in the count to try to make something happen or what, and while they did get 9 Hs off of him and only struck out twice against him, you can't really say that Miller didn't dominate either - 17 GOs don't happen everyday, even by groundball pitchers (Carmona, for instance, only had 12 GOs in 7 IP against the A's.)

Garza did outduel him, but the disparity wasn't by THAT much.  Miller essentially was on the short-end of a pitchers' duel, which didn't look like much of a duel at the end of the game with Lara having command problems and Warden allowing 2 IRs to score.  Not the most glamorous outing by Miller, but hardly a bad one either.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

Other Games
Eric Hurley takes his 5-0, 1.47 ERA record into today's Texas League Game.  Hurley may need to move up to AAA soon to be challenged.

Another interesting matchup is in the Cal league where Joe Martinez, 3-1, 2.66 goes against Michael Bowden, 1-0, 1.62.

The Louisville staff let him go back out for the 6th inning when he had already thrown 99 pitches. He promplty gave up a double then a sac bunt before leaving the game. Poor choice on the coaching staff. Bailey was working with a lot of his breaking stuff in the game. He struck out 1 batter on 3 straight curveballs.

More from El Sid
Rotoworld reports...

Sidney Ponson-S- Twins May. 12 - 5:08 pm et

"Sidney Ponson was lit up for six runs -- five earned -- in four innings by the Tigers on Saturday.

Going with Ponson was never a very good idea in the first place, and it's time for the Twins to try something else. They have four better candidates for the rotation in Kevin Slowey, Matt Garza, Scott Baker and Glen Perkins, with Slowey in line for the first shot to take over."

I have said all year people should lay off Sidney as he is as legit of a #9 starter as you'll find in any rotation in the majors.

isn't he making his AA debut today? i'm very uncertain of this, and milb.com doesn't seem to have him listed, but he pitched 5 days ago for lakeland and then was promoted.

by jpahk on May 12, 2007 6:41 PM EDT reply actions

i seem to have guessed right
so far he's pitched 5 scoreless innings with 3 strikeouts, no walks, and 2 singles allowed. he has induced 10 groundouts and 2 flyouts.

by jpahk on May 12, 2007 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

final line
8.0 IP, 6 hits (all singles), 0 walks, 1 HBP, 7 K's, 1 run (unearned). 14 GB outs, 2 FB outs.

not bad for his first AA start. he's on the fast track, all right.

by jpahk on May 12, 2007 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

why?
OK, so by my understanding, he has only two pitches.  Fastball and slider.  Both good pitches, the slider especially great.

But he doesn't throw a splitter.  He doesn't throw a sinker.

So why the hell all the groundballs?

by Curtis Pride on May 13, 2007 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions

fastball
he has two fastballs: the four-seamer, which he doesn't throw much, gets up into the mid-90s. the two-seamer, which he throws all the time, is low-90s and has a TON of sink. that's how he gets all the ground balls.

generally speaking when people say "sinker" they mean sinking fastball, i.e. two-seamer.

by jpahk on May 13, 2007 1:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Two Seamers
The fastball is probably a two seamer that, if kept low in the zone, will sink enough to induce GB's. Sliders, of course have considerable downward action.

by Bravesin07 on May 12, 2007 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

come on
horrible mistake? they can't even pretend that they're going to win this year so who cares if hes not hitting right now? fans still want to see him so  they're still happy and hes a good enough player that letting him take his lumps now and figure out things at the highest level (which i have absolutely no doubt that he will) will ultimately help his development in the long run

by demoting him after just 1 month you're going to completely ruin his mentality and shake his confidence for however long it takes him to establish himself in the majors...every resulting time he got back up he'd be worried about falling into slumps, every time he got out he'd press a little harder and he'd be trying to hit 8 run hrs in every ab...playing head games with the player who carries the future of the organization in his hands is not a smart move

they did the absolute right thing, they recently gave him a full vote of support and stated that he was unquestionably their starting 3b and that if they had the chance to do it all over they wouldn't have done a thing differently

by Rob Castellano on May 13, 2007 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Hey it worked for Teahan didn't it
He was hitting about .210 and they demoted him for a month and he hit great in the 2nd half and is hitting good this year.

by Bravesin07 on May 13, 2007 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions

so let's send him in 08.
Teahen was up for most of 2005, so he was sent down after a year and a half in the majors.

i.e. do follow Teahen's path would be to keep Gordon UP now. fool.

by ufoboy90 on May 13, 2007 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions

fool?
I think that was a bit harsh. the obvious analogy is that Teahan was sent down and it didn't ruin his confidence, rather the pressure was taken off and he got his swing back.

i'm not sure where this whole theme of "if he's sent down he'll be mentally ruined" comes from, but though it's repeated often i see no evidence for it. in this case, Gordon clearly has the ability to hit at the major league level and clearly isn't. he needs to be given space to get back to where he was.

by scooter on May 13, 2007 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Teahen
His case was a little different. There was an obvious hole in his swing that pitchers were abusing. So he got sent down to fix it, and when he did, he got called right back up. Obviously you know the story from there...

Yankee pitching prospects
are just too sick. Horn's control is getting better, and his stuff is plain sick. Chamberlain is one of my favorite prospects period. The guy has the big time fastball and has good control. The only thing I worry about Chamberlain is his breaking stuff which can be inconsistent at times but they do have some potential. Nevertheless, Chamberlain so far looks great on the mound.

Osiros Matos- 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.

Lancaster blanked SJ 1-0.
SJ managed just 1 hit, a double by Alex Requena.  The SJ offense has pretty much ground to a complete halt in the last couple of weeks although they were going agains Bowden, a good pitcher.
Joe Martinez- 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 2.51.  Martinez pitched a great game in his own right.  Just not quite as good as Bowden, or maybe the SJ hitters weren't as good as the Lancaster hitters?

Indians' Overview!
Hello everyone,

Indians defeat the A's 6-3:

RHP Fausto Carmona - W (4-1) - 7.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, 1 HR (2-run to Cust); 12 G/3 F; 60 S/40 B (3.12 - gave up all 3 runs in the first, but only allowed 3 more hits after that; his command wasn't as sharp today, but was able to battle through it, something he likely wouldn't have done last year, as he was always rushing on the mound, whereas now, he can calm himself and recompose himself on the mound.)

2B Josh Barfield - 2-4, 2 3B, 2 RBI (.212 - first Indian to hit 2 3Bs in a game since Omar Vizquel did it back on Aug. 12, 2001 against Texas.)

Oakland:
DH Jack Cust - 1-3, 1 HR, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K (.316 - continues to stay hot; he seems to be hitting the ball to all fields, something I don't think he did as well in the past, being more of a pull hitter in his earlier ML trials;  the fact of being a DH, as was mentioned, probably helps as well.)

LHP Dallas Braden - 4.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K (5.65)

Onto the Minors:

AAA Buffalo - lost to Rochester (MIN) 8-1:

CF Ben Francisco - 1-3, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 S (.317)
SS Hector Luna - 2-4 (.271)
1B Ryan Mulhern - 1-3, 1 2B, 1 E (2 - throw) (.318)
RF Brad Snyder - 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K (.262)

RHP Adam Miller - L (4-1) - 7.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR (solo to Jones); 17 G/2 F; 68 S/27 B (2.45 - not a bad outing by Miller, though he came up on the short end.  Notice the G/F ratio - 17 GOs probably explain why he had so few Ks, and might also partly explain the higher H totals compared to his past few outings.  It seems he was pitching more to contact today - maybe the Red Wings hitters were trying to hit him early in the count, which worked to some extent, as they did have 9 Hs off of him, with only 2 Ks, but still didn't score very much off of him.)
LHP Juan Lara - 0.1 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB (1 IBB); 1 F; 9 S/15 B (7.20 - horrible command by Lara today, which helped to open the floodgates for the Red Wings.)
RHP Jim Ed Warden - 1.2 IP, 1 H, 3 K; 2 F; 13 S/7 B; 2/2 IR scored (9.19 - better command by Warden today, but the one hit given up was costly, as it allowed 2 runs to score.)

Rochester:
RF Garrett Jones - 2-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K (.316 - had the solo shot off Miller in the 2nd; 2B off Lara.)
3B Matt Moses - 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI (.258 - 2B off Lara.)

RHP Matt Garza - 7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 WP, 1 HBP; 7 G/8 F; 68 S/41 B (3.75 - solid outing by Garza today; as was mentioned, Garza didn't have the same command as Miller, as evidenced by the B/S ratio and the WP and HBP, nor had the same amount of GOs, but had more Ks than Miller and gave up 4 fewer hits.)

AA Akron - defeated Erie (DET) 2-1 in 11 innings:

CF Trevor Crowe - 1-6, 1 RBI, 2 K (.168 -
SS Asdrubal Cabrera - 2-4, 1 HBP (.307 - had 1 hit off of Miller, as well as a HBP by Miller.)
RF Brian Barton - 1-4, 2 K (.282 - had 1 hit off of Miller.
LF Ryan Goleski - 1-4, 1 BB, 2 K (.261 - had 1 IF hit off of Miller.)
DH Pat Osborn - 2-4, 1 BB (.242 - had 1 hit off of Miller.)
2B Brandon Pinckney - 1-4, 1 R, 1 BB (.294 - had 1 hit off of Miller.)

LHP Shawn Nottingham - 6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K; 4 G/9 F (2.92 - another solid to great outing for Nottingham, pretty much matching Miller pitch-for-pitch, which enabled the Aeros to win it in 11.)
RHP Jensen Lewis - 4.0 IP, 2 H, 5 K; 6 G/1 F (3.00 - starting to get locked in at AA:  last 13.0 IP - 7 H, 5 BB, 15 K)
RHP Randy Newsom - W (1-0) - 1.0 IP, 1 K; 2 G (0.00 - AA debut for just turned 25-YO undrafted FA signed by the Red Sox and traded to the Indians as the PTBNL in the Crisp-Marte deal.)

Erie:
3B Kody Kirtland - 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI (.295)
2B Michael Hollimon - 1-4, 2 K, SB (4 - 2nd base off Lewis/Toregas)

LHP Andrew Miller - 8.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, 1 HBP; 14 G/2 F (1.13 - impressive AA debut for 1st-Rd. 2006 pick out of North Carolina.)

High-A Kinston - leading Potomac (WSH) 3-1 after 3.5 innings when the game was suspended by rain; it will be resumed Sunday at 1 PM EDT before the regularly scheduled game.

Early notes include Drennen going 1-1 with 2 RBIs and a BB, while RHP Clint Everts was struggling with his command - 3.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 2 K, 2 HB (Head and Hodges.)

More notes on this game in tomorrow's report!

Low-A Lake County - lost to Lakewood (PHI) 5-4:

RF Jason Denham - 2-5, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K (.319)
3B Jared Goedert - 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB (IBB,) 1 K, 1 E (7-fielding)

LF Nick Weglarz - 1-4, 1 R, 1 BB (IBB,) 2 K (.257)
SS Carlos Rivero - 1-5, 1 K (.275)
DH Roman Pena - 1-4, 1 HBP (.255)
2B Adam Davis - 1-2, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP (.207 - has a good OBP of .371 and a 21 BB/23 K ratio in 92 ABs, but the 2006 3rd-Rd. pick out of Florida is struggling to hit at Low-A so far after hitting just .213 at SS-A Mahoning Valley last year.)

RHP Jeanmar Gomez - 5.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 1 HB; 6 G/6 F (6.35 - solid outing except for the walks.)
RHP Paolo Espino - BS (1); L (2-1) - 2.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 K; 2 G/3 F (4.79)
RHP Josh Tomlin - 2.0 IP; 1 G/5 F (2.49 - continues to do well at Low-A: 25.1 IP, 18 H, 4 BB/29 K, 0.68 GO/AO, .200 BAA.)

It's a little early to get on and off bandwagons.  The season has a long way to go but I have a few upgrades.  I did not think Jordan Brown had enough power to be a top 10 but he just might.  Rivero might also be top 10 material.  My faith in Scott Lewis and McBride look justified.  I haven't made any serious drops yet even with some slow starts.  How about you.

I agree with you; a few other notables!
Hello sdtribefan,

Thanks - greatly appreciated!  :-)

I agree with the ones you mentioned; I too am surprised by Brown's power (9 2B, 1 3B, 3 HRs in 123 ABs,) and maybe even moreso by his speed (6 SBs, 0 CS.)

Ever since I heard about Rivero, I've been keeping a special eye on him, along with the young ones, Pena and Weglarz, both of whom are doing reasonably well at Low-A.  All of them are on my radar, along with McBride and Goedert of course.

I think Goedert shot up a few rankings at least, while Crowe is teetering on falling - I keep waiting for him to go on a tear, but if he keeps this up through May, I think he will have to drop somewhat at least, as I expected him to be at AAA by June, which he won't be if he keeps up his poor play.  Stephen Head is another one who is threatening to move down the list as well if he keeps up his poor play.  Constanza has not done well at High-A either after handling the level last year.

I'm keeping an eye also on LHP Reid Santos, who is adding to the Indians' nice collection of LH reliever prospects (Perez, Lara, Sipp, Santos.)  If Mariano Gomez could add to it, and is off to a decent start so far, he would be another one to watch.

Jeff Stevens also intrigues me a bit; he's struggled a bit of late, but his Ks and low H rate (10 H, 26 K in 26 IP) is quite good, even though it should be at High-A, but most talked about him like he was a no-name when we acquired him as a PTBNL from the Phillips deal - he might have a chance to be more than a no-name if he can keep this up, especially if the report is true he can reach 95 with his fastball.

Frank Herrmann is also another intriguing name to watch - the undrafted FA from Harvard is doing quite well, putting himself on the prospect map.

Brad Snyder is still striking out too much, but is actually doing better at Buffalo than I thought he would (has a .381 OBP thanks to 14 BBs, along with the 29 K in 83 ABs.)

Ryan Mulhern is really hitting quite well and giving the Indians some depth at 1B, something they weren't having after Aubrey's latest injury and Head's High-A ineffectiveness.

Francisco continues to stay consistent and really should be considered more often than he is - I think his offensive skillset is just as good as Gutierrez's, and he'd probably make a perfect 4th OFer for the Indians or another ML club.

John Drennen is off to a slow start at High-A, but unlike Crowe and Head, I'm not going to move him down at this point, since he is young for High-A and is rebounding a bit (going 6 for 7 recently to move his BA up into the .240s.)

Overall, I agree it's a bit early to be moving around prospect rankings too much, but those ones above have caught my eye, mostly moving up or having the chance to move up a few spots, with the exception of Crowe and Head, who are headed down without some quick turnarounds.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the update - stay tuned!  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

Bowden
pitching for Lancaster.  Hitter's haven (although he was away tonight)

7 innings 1 hit 5Ks 1 BB

he's got a 1.37 ERA and a 46/8 K/BB ratio in 46 innings so far this year, and has yet to give up an earned run in 3 away starts (19 innings)

Gomez called up to the Mets
Rickey Henderson was there tonight to work with Gomez, and he said that Gomez was called up. Oberkfell also said that Gomez was not in Vegas tonight.

is back....went 2-2 with 3 walks and a HR. geez, the rap on him was great defense questionable bat, but I suppose now the rap will be if he can keep healthy enough to stay behind the plate. granted, particularly with his time out with a bad elbow, it's early yet, but a .557/.690 OBP/Slugging line is impressive. It's in Bakersfield, which isn't one of the Cal Lg's better hitting parks, though when on the road he's certainly hitting in some good hitter parks.

leaving aside small sample concerns, the 19 walks vs 8 Ks is remarkable.

Dallas Trahern
Tigers prospect not many know about made his debut in AAA last night for Toledo and picked up the win.  He's still only 21 years old.

6 1/3 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
most importantly: 14 groundouts to only 3 flyouts.  Not a big K guy, but a true groundball freak.

Had a 1.88 ERA in AA with a 3.29 GO/AO ratio in 6 starts previous to being promoted.  Had a 3.58 GO/FO ratio last year.
