Gomez
Went 1-4 with a run scored, he might get called up soon depending on Alou's injury.

by Bravesin07 on May 1, 2007 5:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

no chance
on top of the fact that hes struggling right now, they've got endy and newhan in the majors already and then ben johnson ahead of him and lastings if its going to be drawn out...gomez will see time at shea this september and then probably start the '08 season in RF for the mets

by robcast23 on May 1, 2007 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well
I would agree but under certain circumstances he could get the call. First, Ben Johnson and Milledge are both hurt. So that makes him the number one in the minors. Secondly, If Alou is out for a long period of time the Mets will not rely on Endy and Newhan. Newhan is the super UTL player, but the Mets don't like him in a starting role. The same with Endy, the mets have said time after time that in a starting role Endy isn't as productive. If the circumstances present themselves then Gomez, even in his young age, might get a call.

Alou's Injury?
I hadn't heard about that.  Wow!  That's a surprise.  I don't think he's ever been injured before, has he?  Here I was thinking the Giants got the short end of the deal with the Mets first rounder and a supplemental pick.

by DrBGiantsfan on May 1, 2007 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Alou didn't get DL'd
He'll be on it probably by mid May if he's crashing into walls.  Man David Wright has been terrible, he's hitting like a Joe Randa this year.

Alou injured
back in 1993 he has one of the ugliest fracture you'll ever see. I didn't like to watch blood, but I think you could see some bones in his leg. He injured running at max speed rounding third.

I got 37 minutes as the line on how long until dougdirt replies that Maybin has fanned more than Bruce!

seriously you are good
It was 35 minutes, and it was the first time I had been on the site in like 4 hours since I just got home about 10 minutes ago.

I've just noticed
because I am a Tigers fan, and that makes me a Maybin fan.  I would be happy with either one on my team, they both project to be studs.

surely
I like Bruce more, but Maybin is the #2 OF prospect in my mind.

Close
29 strikeouts in 101 at bats. So 28.7%.

but since I got called out on it, might as well.

Maybin has 27 strikeouts in 77 at bats, so 35.1%.

Didn't Wood get sent back a day or two ago?
Hello King Felix 21,

If I recall correctly, I think Brandon Wood was sent back to AAA Salt Lake City Saturday or Sunday, so that matchup won't materialize just yet.  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

Clay Buchholz is dealin'
Perfect game through 4.

4 IP, 0 hits, 0 walks, 0 runs, 6 K's.

by Plus Plus Fastball on May 1, 2007 7:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He will be a good three or four on Boston
On any other staff I would think he would be a very good two or a possible number one.  On Boston he is going to be behind Dice-K and Beckett and possible Lester in future.  Boston could have a staff of 15-18 game winners that are young very soon.

by Bravesin07 on May 1, 2007 7:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Re: Buchholz
Perfect through 6 now. 8 K's in the game and his ERA is now 1.69 on the year.

His dominance from Hi-A late last year has carried over to Double-A.  I love this kid.

AA suns
3 notables

Hu- 2-5 .340avg

Xavier Paul- 1-4 1hr(3) 1bb .293avg

Zach Hammes: 2IP 1H 0ER 0bb 2k

While playing CF, on the season he is hitting 293/375/467 with 3 homeruns.

he still striking out a bit too much (25% of PAs) but so far, so good right now. When drafted, he was lauded as a 5 tool player and it seems he might be putting it together this year. Hes a CFer with the strongest arm in the oraganization. He might have slepper/late bloomer potential if he can keep up his current line.

Zach Hammes is another bullpen sleeper. The dodgers are really high on this kid after he blazed through the Hawaii Fall League and saw his fb sitting in the mid 90s and touching the high 99s. This kid is huge, and might be a late bloomer himself. With Meloan probably getting promoted soon, Hammes will probably take over as the closer for the AA team.

both players are 22 yrs old.

by npurcell on May 1, 2007 7:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Perfect game and no-no gone...
Buchholz allowed a leadoff single to open the 7th.  Runner was thrown out trying to steal 2nd so he has faced the minimum amount of batters still.  His night is probably over and his final line would be:

7 IP, 1 hit, 0 walks, 0 runs, 9 K's.  27/3 K/BB ratio on the year and a 1.61 ERA.

Phil Hughes Update
IP   H R ER BB K Season ERA
4.0  0 0 0  2  3 4.32

...against a pretty formidable Texas lineup.  Go kid, go! Now that the jitters are behind you, time to flash that pinpoint command. Hopefully he sticks with the Yankees after this start - God knows the pitching staff could use a boost.

I was just going to post that
Looks like he'll get his first win unless the rangers comeback like the Yankees did last year against them.  I donno how he's looked because I can't see the game.  If the box score is right he's only thrown 32 pitches in 4 innings.

by Bravesin07 on May 1, 2007 9:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

43.
He's thrown 43, Yahoo taking a while to update.  Also had all his outs besides the K's obviously on the ground, including two weak balls hit to him.  He's also produced two DP's after his walks.

by Tabata Time on May 1, 2007 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That article about Hughes
I wonder what that guy feels about that.  Remember Halladay used to throw in the mid 90's when he was young now he's in the low 90's.  That's why I compare Hughes to Halladay.

by Bravesin07 on May 1, 2007 9:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

hmm?
Seriously, is that the only reason you compare the two?  A change in velocity?

96
Blew a 96 MPH heater past someone in the 9th last night.  Might have just been a bad Sportsnet reading, but it's not like he can't dial it up when he's on.  He's been consistently at 93ish in the games I've watched this year, with quite a lot of movement.
Rios is the next Juan Gonzales, thats right, I said it.

K'd two in the inning. Seems like he's getting stronger after walking 3 in the first two innings.  Will Torre let him go the whole way though if he has a no hitter through 8 or let Mo finish it up.

Gotta give Hughes the chance...
...if his pitch count isn't too high.  Potentially throwing a no-no in your 2nd major league start - wow! Something tells me Steinbrenner will NOT let Cashman send this kid back down after tonight's display.

I heard he's coming off the DL soon.  That would be a great matchup if they face off.  Two future aces of the league if they don't get hurt.

Thank You
If Russ Ortiz makes another start this season, I may get sick to my stomach. I know he's a nice guy and all, but have Ortiz supplant Chulk's lead-blowing self in the bullpen and put Lincecum in there. He's making fools of AAA players (and Brian Sabean as we speak)

Giants Report
AAA- Tucson edged Fresno 7-6.

Fred Lewis- 2 for 5, 2B, 3B.  BA= .241.  Fred needs to kick it into gear here or he ain't ever going to see the major leagues.

Nate Schierholtz- 2 for 5, 3B.  .302.  Good to see Nate back up over .300.

Justin Knoedler- 2 for 5. .272.  Could be a backup MLB  catcher someday.  Longshot though.

Matt Palmer- 5 IP 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 2 K.  2.83.  Unexciting numbers, but a 2.83  ERA isn't bad for the PCL.

Scott Munter- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 6/0!  Munter had the ol' sinker going today.

AA- Altoona beat CT 6-2.

John Bowker- 2 for 4, HR(4). BA= .319.

High A- San Jose topped Stockton 3-1.

Antoan Richardson- 2 for 3, 2B, SF. BA- .326.  Antoan continues to confound the critics.

Joe Martinez- 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 11 K.  Nice rebound from a rough start last time in Lancaster.  Not quite Tim Lincecum, but not bad.  ERA= 2.86.

Low A- Kannapolis outhit Augusta 8-5.

Adam Cowart- 5 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 5 K, GO/AO= 7/2.  ERA= 2.06.  Is the league figuring out Cowart the second time around, or did the law of averages just catch up with him?

Rockies Report
Colorado Springs took a 3-1 over Tacoma in 14 innings, scoring a run in the 9th and two more in the 14th.
--3B Ian Stewart (.306): 3 for 6, run, K. Still not showing much power, 4 XBH in 85 AB's.
--1B Joe Koshansky (.267): 2 for 5, 2 RBI (15), K. Has 12 BB, 21 K in 75 AB.
--SP Ubaldo Jimenez (8.14 ERA): 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K. 64 of 108 pitches for strikes. His last two starts, spanning 13 innings, he's allowed 8 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 11 K.

Tulsa had a 7-run bottom of the 9th to tie the game at 8 before losing the game 9-8 in 10 innings to visiting Arkansas.
--2B Corey Wimberly (.000): 0 for 4, run, E (1), HBP. Season debut after hamstring injury.
--SS Jonathan Herrera (.333): 1 for 4, 2 RBI (9), run, BB.
--RP Darren Clarke (0.00 ERA): 1 IP, 1 H, 2 K. Season debut for hard throwing righty after groin injury. Fastball in mid to high 90's, must stay healthy.

Modesto went into Visalia and beat Upton and the Oaks 12-6.
--CF Dexter Fowler (.212): 3 for 5, 2B (2), 3 runs, BB, CS (3). Finally over the Mendoza-line!
--2B Eric Young Jr (.247): 2 for 4, RBI (12), 2 runs, BB.
--SS Chris Nelson (.277): 2 for 4, 2B (6), HR (3), 4 RBI (15), 2 runs, BB.
--SP Samuel Deduno (6.55 ERA): 6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, 1 HR, 2 WP. Is more than likely his last start in Modesto, will be up in Tulsa soon.

Asheville whipped up on Greenville 8-1.
--SS Hector Gomez (.216): 0 for 5, 2 K, E (9). I think I jinxed him yesterday.
--2B Daniel Mayora (.295): 3 for 4, 2B (8), HR (1), 2 RBI (11), 3 runs, K.
--1B Michael Paulk (.416): 1 for 4, 2B (9), RBI (18), 2 K.
--RF Victor Ferrante (.290): 3 for 4, 2B (2), HR (3), 3 RBI (16), run, CS (4).
--SP Simon Ferrer (2-2, 5.65 ERA): 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.

It's hard to root against Ferrer. For those wondering and don't know, the 26-yr-old converted infielder is now facing long odds, trying to make his journey to the majors as a knuckleballer after failing as an infielder. Here's a very good article printed about a week ago on Ferrer:

Michael Bowden
20 yo RHP with Lancaster Jethawks.

6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K's.

Season line- 1-0, 1.91, 33 IP, 7 BB's, 37 K's.

Anybody got info on him.  He's faring much better than some more highly touted BoSox prospects in the wilds of the high desert.  20 yo on high A is impressive too!

by DrBGiantsfan on May 2, 2007 9:03 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Bowden
He was a sandwich-round pick of the Red Sox in '05 out of an Illinois high school, and despite a somewhat unorthodox delivery sox felt they stole him there because of his excellent curveball. BA briefly tried to hang a "third-starter ceiling" label on him, but I think they've backed off that now. He's always ranked just behind Buchholz on Sox prospect lists despite being almost two years younger, mainly because Clay B. is thought to have the more complete arsenal. But they're as close as can be in most minds...

Angel Guzman...what the???
What is with this guy???  He is supposed to be a top talent and he can just never put things together and be effective for more than two games in a row.

This guy has to be one of the most overrated prospects in recent memory...either that or the Cubs have no idea how to bring along young arms.
