Community Minor League Report for 04-30-2007

Just so that Giantsfan doesn't feel obligated to start it every day.

The big thing I'm eyeing is Gallardo - Marmol.  Gallardo has a tough row to hoe if he's to try and keep pace with Lincecum's numbers.

Some games already concluded today.

  • Rasmus starting to pick it up with another 2-4
  • Longoria continues to hit for power (5th homer) and with patience (17th walk). Looks like I was wrong here.
  • Brandon Hynick is old (22) for A+ ball (so were Garza and Slowey last year), but he pitched a complete game 2 hitter with 7ks and no walks.  Now at 22:3 and zero ER in 32 innings

    Thank You
Was just making some notes, but I really appreciate the help.  This should be truly a community diary.

I've got the "other" Andrew Miller going for Fort Wayne against Jeff Manship of Beloit.

I'm still having a hangover from all the Tim Lincecum excitement yesterday.  That was quite an experience.  A bunch of Giants fans were there. Most of them haven't had much to say except his FB was 94-96 on stadium gun.  Most impressive was the complete helplessness the offspeed stuff seemed to induce in the hitters.  That's what really sets Tim apart, I think.  He not only has the great fastball, but if anything, the curveball is a better pitch and it sounds like he's used the AAA time to work in a quality changeup to boot.

    response
i only have high standards for players that warrant those type of expectations. He isnt showing the same type of command he showed last summer which is dissapointing right now. From listening to every one of his starts, he hasnt been able to throw his curveball as consistently for strikes as i have hoped.

by npurcell on Apr 30, 2007 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He might have the exact same control
as he did last summer.... he is just facing much better hitters who wont chase stuff out of the zone, or are now maybe fouling off some of his better offerings rather than swinging and missing and getting another pitch to try and hit.

    WOW
Are you being possessed by Bravesin07???  Granted your post is about 5X longer than anything he's ever posted though.  Here are his walk totals from all five starts : 6, 3, 2, 1, 3.

What if his command is just fine, but the Low A umps aren't calling the strikes on the black?  Or they can't call that curve correctly?  Since you're just listening, you can't see where the pitch actually is.

And it still is just 25 innings.  Nobody has perfect command from the moment they enter pro ball.  Give the kid a break, did you really expect him to walk only 15 or 20 all year???  Mahalo

    Matt

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

    got to agree with npurcell
if Kershaw is really an elite prospect, worthy of all this hype (rather than garnering it simply because he's a Dodger pitching prospect/high Logan White draft choice), then he should be putting together a truly dominating performance. having control issues at such a low level is a bit disappointing, since, at low-A, really good pitchers should be able to put up absolutely SICK K/BB lines (unlike at higher levels).

i don't think npurcell's calling him a bust or anything close to that. i don't even think he's saying "he WON'T live up to the expectations." what i think he's saying (or at least what i'd agree with) is that Kershaw's performance thus far hasn't warranted naming him a top 10 or 20 prospect, which was the upside-expectation for him this season. if he hasn't done that yet, it's disappointing. he still COULD, but he'd have to control the breaking ball better and walk fewer batters, just like npurcell said.

it's not a matter of needing perfection to be a prospect. but, if you're going to be on the level of the Lincecums, Gordons and Uptons, you need to be pretty close. hopefully, in a month, we'll all be saying he's there, but, right now, he's doing pretty well, while coasting his reputation into being called "elite."

by bleedjaxblue on May 1, 2007 2:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

    to be fair
his peripherals are a bit skewed by that horrid opening day start where the weather was below freezing so i guess i might be too hard on him. Hes still an elite young prospect in my eyes but i really wanted to see him reach AA this year and that wont happen.

by npurcell on May 1, 2007 2:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

    Just to compare...
    Lincecum 2006: 3.9 BB/9, 15.61 K/9
    Kershaw 2007: 5.4 BB/9, 12.6 K/9 or if you remove his first start for reasons mentioned above, he's at a 3.5 BB/9, and 12.9 k/9

So, it seems given this early season that Kershaw could at least be compared to Lincecum from last year, when many considered Lincecum to be an elite prospect.

So I wouldn't say he's coasting, per se, since his performance has been outstanding since his first start, although I think most want him to strikeout 12 in 6 innings with one walk every time out.

went 1-2 today with a homer, a walk, a sac fly, and a steal.  the homer was his 10th of the year.  what a month for the 24 year old, .324/.378/.797 and only struck out 10 times.  i will take a homer for every strikeout any time.

    per hynick/miller
not sure why one would downplay hynick's year so far given his age. his age is the same as miller's, and the same really as any guy coming out of college. College certainly delays development time a bit, and that has to part of the perspective on Hynick, Miller, and others. Hynick's pitching at an appropriate level and, let's face it, to be doing what he is doing in the Cal Lg is pretty remarkable -- i guess it's good prep for Coors!

be interesting to see if he gets bumped up to AA at some point this year.

    Agree
To me, 22 y/o is not old for Hi-A, particularly for a guy drafted out of 4-yr college.  But Hynick has been a mid-range prospect at best up to now.  That will change if he keeps performing as he has so far.  BTW, he put up very good stats last year in the Pioneer League, another very tough pitchers' league.

Could you describe what he's doing at the plate...
    Hello Galt,

Just curious, because I don't get to see him much, if at all, now, what exactly is he doing at the plate?  Is he swinging and missing a lot, is he taking a lot of pitches, is he pulling a lot of pitches and hitting them into the ground, is he hitting a lot of lazy fly balls, is he hitting them hard at someone?

I know in his limited time with the Indians last year, it seemed he had a long swing and it took a while for him to get it going through the hitting area, as well as the fact that he did chase some pitches.

Thanks!  Take care and have a great day!

    Indians' Overview!
    Hello everyone,

Indians were off today; they host Toronto tomorrow.

AAA Buffalo - defeated Pawtucket (BOS's AAA Aff.) 12-4; 67 degrees, clear, 24 MPH wind from R to L:

CF Franklin Gutierrez - 2-3, 3 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K (.370 - really putting together his most consistent stretch since he's been in the Indians' organization - SSS understood - so far in 2007:
    13 G, 54 AB, 20 H, 14 R, 2 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 4 BB, 7 K, 2 SB, 1 CS, .370/.414/.519 - and he's still only 24.)

DH Andy Marte - 0-2 (.000 - wonder if he suffered an injury or not from that HBP yesterday; even so, in my opinion, his not getting a H in 4 AAA ABs isn't exactly encouraging for a player who's supposed to be ready for regular playing time at the ML level.)
RF Brad Snyder - 2-3, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 SB (5 - 2nd base off Hansack/Kottaras) (.286 - very encouraging, both his hitting and his plate discipline - he is just 24, so he still could force his way into the Indians' future if he can continue to produce at or close to this rate.)

    RHP Jim Ed Warden - 0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER; 1 FO; 3 S/4 B; allowed 1/1 IR to score (6.23 - has struggled a bit of late.)
LHP Juan Lara - 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 K, 1 BS; 2 GO, 1 FO; 10 S/6 B; allowed 1/1 IR to score (3.86 - has also not been as good of late as earlier in the season.)
    RHP Brian Sikorski - 1.0 IP, 2 K; 1 FO; 12 S/5 B (5.87 - he's doing better over his last few outings.)
    RHP Edward Mujica - 1.0 IP, 1 H; 2 GO, 1 FO; 10 S/6 B (0.00 - his great season continues - 9 G, 10.0 IP, 4 H, 12 K, 0.67 GO/AO, .125 BAA.)

    Pawtucket:
    CF David Murphy - 2-4, 2 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI (.278)
    RF Brandon Moss - 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 OF assist (threw out Gutierrez at 1st) (.316)
C George Kottaras - 0-3, 1 BB (.212 - not hitting very well at AAA to this point.)

RHP Devern Hansack - 6.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 1 HR (solo to Keith Ginter,) (L - 1-3); 9 GO, 1 FO; 60 S/32 B (3.77 - good outing in terms of GO and K; decent outing in terms of runs given up - one run was given up by Edgar Martinez in relief.)

AA Akron - off, along with the rest of the Eastern League.

    High-A Kinston - defeated Lynchburg (PIT's High-A Aff.) 10-4; 89 degrees, clear, 1 MPH variable wind:

    RF Jose Constanza - 3-5, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 2 SB (6 - 2nd base and 3rd base) (.289)
    SS Josh Rodriguez - 2-5, 3 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI (.238)
    3B Wes Hodges - 2-5, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI (.286 - 1st multi-HR game of his pro career!)
    DH Chris Gimenez - 2-5, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI (.302)

RHP Jeff Stevens - 3.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K; 5 GO, 2 FO (0.45 - worst outing of the year, and his 2nd BS - his first BS came on that unearned run he gave up earlier in the year.)

Low-A Lake County - defeated Hickory (PIT's Low-A Aff.) 10-4 in 7.5 innings due to rain; 57 degrees, cloudy, 5 MPH variable wind; 23 minute rain delay:

    RF Roman Pena - 3-4, 3 RBI, 1 K, 1 CS (2 - 2nd base) (.294)
    1B Matt Whitney - 1-2, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 BB (.329)
    3B Jared Goedert - 1-2, 3 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB (.357)
    LF Nick Weglarz - 2-3, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K (.240)
    SS Carlos Rivero - 2-4, 1 2B (.295)

RHP Steven Wright - 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 7 K, 1 HR (solo in the 4th); 7 GO, 3 FO (5.66 - outside of one bad outing, he's done very well in his first season of pro ball.)
    RHP Cody Bunkelman - 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K; 3 GO (1.88 - first bad outing in last several appearances.)

Take care and have a great day!

    too bad
there is such a logjam of veterans on the big club because they could use Mujica in the pen right now.  Not convinced that Roberto Hernandez is all there, although Joe-Bo isn't as bad as advertised - there are a lot more K's there than I realized there would be.  And the question remains... what to do with Carmona now that Cliff Lee is healthy.  He needs to stay in a rotation getting work as a starter.

by TigerFanInCleveland on May 1, 2007 12:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thoughts on Mujica, Carmona, and Marte!
    Hello everyone,

TigerfaninCleveland - those are very good points.  I'm also thinking that Mujica could replace Hernandez eventually if Hernandez continues to struggle, but the Indians will probably give him another month or two to get straightened out, since they like his experience and his influence on their young pitchers.

As for Carmona, that's why he got sent down to AAA Buffalo today - he'll continue to start every 5 days down there.  OF Ben Francisco was called up to give the Indians some more balance offensively in their OF (Sizemore, Dellucci, Nixon, and Choo are all LH batters, and Blake, one of two RH OF batters, is playing regularly at 3B now in place of Marte, leaving only Michaels to bat from the right side.)

casejud - I do exaggerate a bit, but he went hitless again in his second AAA game as well; the questions about his hitting ability are not going to be helped by the fact that he can't get a hit in his first two AAA at-bats.  While he did fairly well at AAA, he didn't exactly dominate the level, and with the way he's looked in the Majors to this point, one has to wonder whether he'll get extended time at AAA to work on his swing and approach, because at this point, he doesn't ready for the Majors offensively to me.

Therefore, it wouldn't surprise me if Marte is down in AAA for 2-4 weeks; I don't think he'll be back up that quickly because he's not crushing AAA pitching to this point.  While one game won't tell you much, most ML-ready hitters can usually hit pretty well right off the bat when facing AAA pitching, which is the main reason I made the comment I made in my review regarding Marte's offense.

I'll give Marte more time because SSS is a factor, but so far, the early results are not promising, though at least he hasn't struck out.  :-)

    Just my 2 cents.

Take care and have a great day!

Still that's a good game with the two BB's.  He has a better eye than Maybin and is showing why he could be Griffey Jr. but I don't think he'll ever hit 56 HR in a season though he's showing the power maybe to clear 40.

by Bravesin07 on May 1, 2007 8:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

    He isnt Griffey
and not really close. Ken Griffey Jr, injuries aside, is the best baseball player to come along in a long long time. He played great defense at one of the most important positions on the field, where guys don't historically hit well, and then went on to be one of the best hitters ever.

At the age Upton is now, in High A, Griffey was on his way to finishing up a month in the Majors. When people get compared to Griffey or Arod these days I just sit back and laugh. Those guys were above and beyond anything we have seen recently and it is not close. Those guys may be two of the best prospects EVER and its a slap in the face when people get compared to them. Look at what they did at the ages they did it.

Its not fair to the player or to either of them.

    Antoan
Am I the only one who keeps seeing "Antoan Richardson" and reading "Antone Williamson" and getting very confused?

    Whothehell is Antone Williamson?

    "Prospect"
Yeah...  4th overall pick, ahead of Nomar Garciaparra, Jason Varitek, and Todd Walker, among others.  Basically he couldn't field, couldn't run, couldn't hit for power, and that was all before he started getting hurt all the time...  Truly one of the bigger busts in MLB draft history, and perhaps in at least the recent history of all of sports.

But yeah, I keep seeing this "Antoan" guy and thinking "He's making a comeback??  Wow, why haven't I heard about this bef... oh, right."

    Antoan
Well, Antoan doesn't hit for power at all, but he's a good fielder and he can definitely run.  He not only runs fast, he runs smart, showing an ability to keep is CS's down.  He's got excellent plate discipline and has maintained great OBP's at ever level in addition to hitting close to .300 or above.

I wouldn't rank him in the Giants top 10 prospects right now let alone the #73 prospect in all of baseball as PECOTA does, but he's definitely an interesting player to watch.

BTW.  Antoan's mother was a sprinter for the Bermuda Olympic team, for whatever that's worth.

    Gomez pimps?
Where have you gone tonight? The only reason left to give a dam about the Mets AAA team (at least position-wise for now) went 3-4 tonight, with another SB (15) and two runs scored. I hesitate to jinx him, but he is currently on pace to steal 94 bases...

by MetfanBren on May 1, 2007 1:05 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

    you jinxed him!!
now he'll only steal 91 or maybe 90 if he gets hurt.

He had been batting leadoff, and I saw they had him hitting 3rd last night. This might have some impact on his SB totals. Wait, Anderson Hernandez is hitting in front of him. Nevermind.

    He has not..
He has been batting third all season. He hasn't batted lead off at all to my knowledge and i follow their games every night.

    hes good
his suff isnt considered elite but he knows how to pitch. Hopefully as he matures physically and turns some of that baby fat on him into a leaner body, he can gain a couple of ticks on that fastball.

    Rox Report
    Tulo continues to hit well, going 4 for 4 to raise his average to .244. He's 8 for his last 17 with 2 HR's, 5 RBI's, 3 BB and 3 K's.

Colorado Springs gave up 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th to lose 7-6 to Tacoma.
    --3B Ian Stewart (.291): 0 for 3, 2 runs, BB, E (3), reached on error.
--RF Sean Barker (.511): 3 for 3, 2 2B (8), run. I don't know what to make of him. He turns 27 May 26th, but it's hard to ignore his start. Obviously he's not going to keep up this pace, but he's hitting .511/.540/1.021. Has 8 2B, 3 3B, 4 HR in only 47 AB's!
    --1B Joe Koshansky (.257): 1 for 4, run, RBI (13), E (5)
--RP Josh Newman (1.96 ERA): 2/3 IP, 2 BB. Lefty has 10 K's and 3 BB in 9.2 IP. Holding lefties to a .125 average.

Tulsa whipped up on Springfield 8-2.
--SS Jonathan Herrera (.337): 4 for 5, 2 runs, K. Was in a 0-for-16 slump, breaks out with a nice game.
    --SP Ching-Lung Lo (2-2, 6.55 ERA): 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 HR. Still only 21 until mid-August.
--RP Juan Morillo (3.86 ERA): 2 IP, zero's across the board, 4 GB-2 FB. Still adjusting to relief role.

Modesto, behind Hynick's gem, won a pitchers duel over Inland Empire 1-0.
    --CF Dexter Fowler (.187): 1 for 3, run, SB (5), BB, K
    --2B Eric Young Jr (.237): 1 for 4, SB (13), 2 K. Hitting .333 with 8 SB last 10 games.
--SS Chris Nelson (.267): 1 for 2, RBI (11), HBP.
--SP Brandon Hynick (3-0, 0.00 ERA): 9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K, 14 GB-6 FB. Continues to impress. Not room for him in Tulsa with Reynolds, Morales, Mattheus, Lo, and soon to be Deduno (one more start in Modesto). Unless of course they decide Reynolds is ready for Tripe-A.

Asheville lost 8-7, giving up 3 runs in the top of the 9th to Greenville.
--SS Hector Gomez (.227): 2 for 4, 2B (7), 2 runs, BB. Just turned 19 year old now has 5 BB, 2 K's last 4 games. Slowly showing improvement.
--DH Michael Paulk (.424): 1 for 4, RBI (17), run, BB, SB (6)
    --1B Logan Wiens (.362): 2 for 4, 2B (8), 3 RBI (17)
    --SP Aneury Rodriguez (5.26 ERA): 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 6 GB-6 FB. Youngster's allowed 0 HR's in 25.2 innings.
--RP Ethan Katz (1.02 ERA): 1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER. Had not allowed a run in 11 games, spanning 16.2 innings before tonight. Has 2 BB and 15 K's in 17.2 IP, with a .161 OPP AVG.

Looking back in the month of April, here's some reflections on the system:
--Three players not really thought of as prospects (Barker, Paulk, Wiens) all have had big months.
--Morales, Reynolds, Hynick, Strop, Weiser have impressed. Jimenez and Rodriguez both have started slow, with Rodriguez pitching better lately.
--Couple prospects, Seth Smith, Koshansky, and Fowler in particular have started out slow.
--Stewart hasn't shown power but has shown more contact ability, and Nelson is hitting the ball hard.

Lets see whats in store for the month of May...

    Paulk and Wiens
I think we've all learned to be wary of people who start looking like hitting prospects once they get to Asheville.  The short porch in right, together with a huge left center and almost no foul territory really boosts batting averages for righties and home run totals for left-handed hitters.
Will Eli be showering in Evian at last?

    Re: Paulk and Wiens
You present a valid argument about Asheville, but not in regards to both of these player's performances.

    Paulk:
    Home- .217/.424/.261, 1 XBH (2B), 9 BB, 5 K
    Road- .500/.542/.694, 9 XBH (7 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR), 7 BB, 8 K

    Wiens:
    Home- .421/.421/.737, 4 XBH (3 2B, 1 HR), 0 BB, 6 K
    Road- .321/.441/.679, 7 XBH (5 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR), 6 BB, 5 K

Both have been successful so far outside of Asheville....

    Zach McAllister
Has anyone heard anything about him?  I know there was discussion about him round ST but haven't seen anything since.
RIP Brian Bluhm I hope you soul has found its way to a much better place.

McAllister will be starting in low A
I think him and Betances are still in extended spring training and will be pitching sooner or later.
