Toonces

John,

Sorry to hear about Toonces.  My cat Murphy was 15 and 1/2 last december when the vet told us that he had cancer.  We were worried about putting him down when I came home and found him coughing and about ready to go.  He died on my lap.  At least I was there for him and didn't have to put him down.  I feel for you and your loss.

I know what it is like to deal with this decision for a pet. One of my family's cats that I have become very attached to was recently found to have cancer; she probably doesn't have very much time left. My condolences to your family, and RIP Toonces.

My condolences to John, Jeri, and the Sickels
family!

Hello John,

Like BoristheSpider, I had a cat who died right there in my arms (actually two - see below) - my Siamese cat, Sammy, who was 12.5 years old when she died, from kidney failure.  In fact, this May 11 will be the 10-year anniversary of her death.  I still think about her from time to time - I was going down to take a shower early that Sunday morning when I found her sprawled out on the floor, gasping for air - it was so sad.  She let out a low meow before she passed.  I take some comfort in the fact that I was there for her in her final moments.

In fact, I had another cat, a stray, named Snoopy (for him being black and white) also die while I was right there - he was at least twenty-years old; he fought hard to stay alive, but eventually passed.  It's so sad to see them go, but you know they're not suffering anymore when they do pass on.

AucklandGM - I'm sorry to hear about your cat having cancer - best of luck to you in deciding what to do and my condolences to you and your family on this sad news.

Again, John, my condolences to you, Jeri, and the Sickels family.  RIP Toonces.

We lost our dog the same way.  She had a couple operations, but the cancer kept coming back.  The night before she was goign to be put asleep she died at the vet.

It always stinks to lose a pet, espically ones that get close to the family.

He lived a long life in a warm house with caring owners...a great life for a cat.

I know what you're going through - we just had to put down the cat that I essentially grew up with. We got her when I was 6, and she lived for 15 more years. Very tough to see them go.

my condolences
john + family.

Man, it's hard to let go of pets like this.   Toonces obviously left quite an indelible mark on your family.   I know the feeling, having put down a couple of cats, one that I grew up with, and I swear hung on till I was back from college to finally give up the ghost, and another that my wife and I had for a short time, but who instantly became a cherished, if eccentric, member of the family.  Like a short, hairy uncle with an oversized personality/self-confidence.

To Toonces, and all the great pets we've had!

I think John disabled the comments for Toonces for a reason.  If some comments are made like they were last time, I suggest you delete this diary.

Once again, sorry about Toonces.

Slurve,

Last time, there were some insensitive comments by posters who don't care for cats.  Anyone posting comments against a person who is grieving is just a complete loser.  Especially when John and his family have been kind enough to support this site financially and with their comments.

I would recommend deleting the negative postings, yet not deleting the thread because there are quite a few posters who care.

Are we referring...
...to the jerk who was chastising everyone for saying John and his family were in their prayers, and that cats don't have souls?  Religion is a touchy subject, so as long as people stay away from that there ought not be any problems.

My condolences John.  It's always hard making that decision, though I can say from experience it's for the best.  I wish you and your family the best.

Sorry for your loss.  Happy Toonces was lucky to find a wonderful home like yours.

I would miss my Toonces look-alike terribly.

By the way, the name "Toonces" always gave me a good chuckle when I saw it.  So thanks for that, too.

My Condolences
So sorry you lost a member of your family. You can ease your mind in knowing Toonces is in a better place and no longer suffering.  You'll always hold the memories you and your family has shared together.  Our family has had to go through that process twice, and its one of the toughest things you'll ever do.  But, We have two more now that help make our house a home.  There are other "toonces" out there looking for a loving home, so after you've had time to heal, consider another kitty...after all, who will run your house?
