Prospect Advice - Milledge versus Carlos Gonzalez

I'm trying to decide between Milledge and Carlos Gonzalez. I keep hearing about how great are Gonzalez's tools, but his numbers aren't that great. Milledge's numbers are better and he's not much older than Gonzalez, but he's been knocked for his attitude.

Who do you think will have the better major league career? Are either of these players going to hit for average in the majors?

Thanks.

milledge

needs to get traded to a team willing to give him a chance.

theres no reason for him to be hitting .340+ right now in AAA

DL...
Well he just went on the DL yesterday with a strained ligament in his foot. Supposedly he's having further tests done on it, and further tests are usually not good news. I think it's safe to say that Gomez is ahead of him now, showing signs of steady improvement...

Plus as thudean said in his response, there's nowhere for him to get AB's in the big leagues even if he were healthy. He should have been getting AB's in AAA from the beginning of the season, but you can't blame them for wanting to hedge their bets on Green. Either way he needs to get healthy though, because he can possibly be very valuable to the organization, even though he's been traded 1,000 times by most people already...

Mill
Milly is on the DL right now, so let's see how he rebounds from his foot problem.  I like him better than Gonzalez at this point, and his 'attitude' problems have been way overblown.  He handled his demotion like a champ, saying he doesn't mind, he'll work on his game and that he'll be waiting to help the team however he can.

As others have mentioned, Shawn Green and Moises Alou are hitting the cover off of the ball.  You can't bench a guy producing as well as either of them, so there's no room for him right now.  The Mets also have Endy Chavez as their super-sub OFer, so where does Milledge play for the Mets right now?

He won a reserve spot out of spring, with the likelihood that he'd supplant Green if Green struggled.  The Mets want to give him a chance but they have no room for him.  If he wasn't in their plans, they'd have moved him for pitching in the off season.

I think Green has enough left in the tank to be decent, but he's obviously playing above his head right now.  Alou is always lethal but is always getting injured.  At some point this year, one of them will go down and Milledge will be back up.

and
I'll add that he's hitting .333, and in just 39AB, so I'm not sure where you got .340+.  He's been tearing it up lately though.

Milledge in AAA
They have green, green is hot, so is alou.  Not going to have milledge in the majors riding the pine.

Aside from that - They can be very similar players.  Both have similar power projections and avg projections.  I do think that Milledge has better strike zone judgment, especially as of lately.  His recognition of off-speed stuff was much improved.  Considering level, I would go with Milledge because he is the surer of the two.  Neither is a bad choice.

Milledge
He's the easy choice in my book.  Unless this foot injury is much more severe than initially reported (like to the point of hindering his speed for the rest of his career), his tools still grade out slightly higher than Gonzalez.  I still think Milledge is a young Barry Bonds (pre-juice), and with 2 aging OFs, I don't see a reason why he will not be a starter in 2008 in New York (or somewhere else if he gets traded).

i agree
to me, milledge has become one of the most underrated prospects in baseball. the quite common slowness of transition to the MLB level (a slow start during the initiation period, and then the OF being packed this spring) along with silly accusations of an attitude problem (in fact, he seems to have a remarkably good attitude) lead to a dimming of enthusiasm. to the contrary, though, as someone mentioned, over the last year + his plate discipline has really improved, he has good defense (despite some nerves last year, leading to things like dropped fly balls), and that incredible bat speed.

unless this foot thing is major, to me he's a guy ready to break out big time. gonzalez is a real good prospect, but not nearly at the milledge level.

Milledge will be in Left for the Mets in 08
He has already moved to left in AAA because he was playing terrible defense 4 errors in 5 or 6 games in RF.  Gomez is going to be the Mets RF in 08 if he keeps hitting around .300 with his solid BB-K ratio 10-13.
