Maybin serious early development

they really need to challenge this kid with AA now... or soon.

you really gotta love his 13/19 BB/K ratio imo.
 he's mashing .311 with 4 hr's 6 SB's.

They need to give him a challenge and move him up soon. Does anyone else agree with me on this? The Tools are there and its a real positive sign to see him develop the walks so far. the power was always there but he's showing it now.

Give him more time....
It's only been a couple weeks. Let it continue for now. Let him have his first drought in A ball and see how he responds. Let him stay down there to get more confidence.

There is no need to rush him right now anyways, the Tigers have an abundance of OF with Thames, Granderson, Maggs, Sheffield, and Monroe. There is no need to possibly hurt Maybin's development by rushing him instead of letting him take his time and completely dominate every level and instill a lot of confidence in the kid.

Or at least, that's how I see it. Just my opinion.

Agreed. Fast starts shouldn't be the barometer
If they were, people would be screaming for Adam Jones to get promoted to majors, and nobody thinks thats a good idea right now, despite the .339/.408/.484 line.

he already had his first drought
during the first week of the season. he started out like 2-26 or something like that

Im a huge Maybin fan...
... but I would like to see him cut the K-rate a bit before moving up. He seems almost too selective right now. His K-rate is really bad overall, but he does balance it a bit with a great BB rate.

He's looking like one of thebest prospects in the minors at this point though

I agree
If anything his drought may have already occurred. He started out like what, 0 for 12? He was abysmal the first week. I guess many prospects were as well though.

At least give him one more month. Two fold reason.

1.Let Erie warm up a bit
2. If he continues at the rate he is or better, he should only be at High A one more month to a month and a half at most.

If he even improves his K-rate a nudge(Which i believe he will) he will be on the fast track to being the best overall prospect in the Minors(or damn near close) IMO.

re agree
agree with everything said above. Its nice to see Maybin add power and discipline this year, but there is no need to rush the kid. AA callup at midseason seems reasonable to me.

maybin
The walks are great but that's still like 160 K's over the course of a season.

by ultxmxpx on Apr 20, 2007 11:05 AM EDT reply actions

actually much higher
19 K's in 14 games which projects to 220 K's in a MLB schedule of 162 games.

The walks are nice and so are the other good things he is doing.

But he certainly does have more work to do on his plate discipline.

by pedrophile on Apr 20, 2007 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

re
Obviously the K rate at this low of level is a red flag, but if these numbers continued at the same rate in AA and AAA I think the Tigers would trade all those K's for his increase in power and walks. 200 K's is bad, but is negligible if he hits 30-40 bombs, walks 80-90 times, hits over .260, and wins Gold Gloves.

He could be a faster, more athletic, and better defensive version of Adam Dunn

by ScottAZ on Apr 20, 2007 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions

for sure
but 220K's at A ball would translate to what in the majors? 250? 270? Typically the numbers will go up without adjustment. And the batting average usually goes down with that.

Of course I do believe Cameron is good enough to make those adjustments.

My comment isn't to say he is terrible or anything. It's to show he has quite a bit of adjustments ahead and that people who are implying his plate discipline has been "fixed" are incorrect.

by pedrophile on Apr 20, 2007 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

K's
The thing is, if he strikes out 200+ times while only walking 80 times, it more likely that he'll be a .230 hitter than hit "over .260" like you're suggesting.

It's not that strikeouts themselves are bad. But they do affect the number of balls in play a player contributes, and that affects the player's batting average, and that affects the number of times they reach base rather than make an out. Right now Maybin would be a far below-average player with regards to his on-base skills. Let's give him some time to develop rather than look at the superficial numbers and assume he should be rushed up the organizational ladder.

I have been impressed with
his early show of power. Last year he was hitting the ball on the ground so much I was wondering if his power would start to show this season or if it would be something to show in a few years, but at least early on he is showing it. The strikeouts are still a big concern though, and I wonder if maybe he is trying to be all or nothing, which would explain the strikeouts and the power so far to this point.

power
how many of the homers are inside the parkers?  i know atleast one is, but i haven't checked the others.  just b/c he has homeruns doesn't mean he is showing power.  he could be using his speed in the big FSL ballparks.

by fewgoodcards on Apr 20, 2007 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Inside the park
Is this what's happening: Maybin hits a groundball right at the shortstop, shortstop boots it, throws it into the stands, Maybin awarded inside the park homerun. ?

Lots of fast players in the FSL that aren't racking up inside the park home runs. At the very least the assumption should be that he's hitting legit doubles or triples, which are still displays of power.

Now, if someone was at a game and could vouch that defenders turned an out into an inside-the-parker, that's different.

by ian on Apr 20, 2007 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

To my knowledge only 1 is an inside the park HR
but even if you take that away, he still has a bunch of XBH's.

I do wonder if it is a thing of the parks he has played in. Coming into yesterday his team had 14 Hr's. The guys in 3rd place in the league had 7. So Lakeland as a team has been killing HR's while they were last in the league in doubles. Usually those two things don't go hand in hand...

Maybin
he might really become Adam Dunn with speed and defense.

by Bravesin07 on Apr 20, 2007 12:29 PM EDT reply actions

didn't see this
a few posts above I said the same thing. I think the Tigers would happily trade 200 K's for production of 30-40 homers, 30 steals, 80-90 walks and Gold Glove defense.

As you said, Dunn is a commodity and he doesn't do anything anymore other than hit homers and walk.

Maybin
Before we crown Maybin for a good streak ask yourself honestly, will his approach work at higher levels?  Or is major adjustment still needed.

I think you have to judge Maybin by his tools and projection, which are outstanding.  His stats are nice, but they're not too exciting because they tell us he's far from arrived.
