Community Minor League Report for 04-12-2007

DrB hasn't started one yet, so I figured I'd put this up. And, since I'm the one starting, obviously I'm going to put the Dodgers minor league games in the diary header.

The Great Lake Loons (low-A) played a 7-inning double header today.

Josh Wall started the first, and not well. 3.2 IP, 7 Hs, 4 ERs, 2 BBs, 1 K, 1 HR and the loss. I don't know if anyone here still considers him a prospect in a meaningful way, but they shouldn't.

Clayton Kershaw got the call in the second and was MUCH better than his first outing, though the walk totals were still a touch higher than you'd like. All in all, he had 5.0 IP, only 1 H, 0 Rs, 3 BBs, 7 Ks, to earn the victory. He also picked two people off 1st base. Crazy.

Preston Mattingly played both games, only one at short, and was a combined 1-for-5 with a triple and 2 Ks. He also made a fielding error.

Josh Bell only played the second game and continued to struggle -- 0-for-2 with a walk and a K.

Francisco Lizarraga, who split the games between short and second, stayed right at .500 for the season, going a combined 3-for-6 with a double, K, and GIDP.

More updates to follow.

Anyway, who're some of the better pitchers starting today in the minors? Any exciting updates? Keep the info coming...

Jeff niemann is starting today
and I think Tim Lincecum is starting tonight as well.

Niemann struggling a little...
His line so far  3inn 3h 2bb 0r 4k and about 75 pitches thrown.  I wouldnt be suprised if next inning was his last.

Niemann
He's getting behind pretty much every batter and command has been a problem all night.

The only good thing so far is that he's not making mistake pitches when runners get on base.

He was pretty good in the 5th though...
I would think he is done:  5ip 3h 0R 2bb 6k's on 94 pitches...for the year he has 10ip 7h 2r 3bb and 13k's.  I would say he is right on track.  He needs to work on getting his pitch count down but 13k's in 10ip is something to like a lot.

Seemed to hit his stride in the 4th and 5th...
2 perfect innings with 2ks.

I would like to see him be more efficient tho, but I'd say he's started the year pretty well.

I think
Franklin Morales will pitch tonight for Tulsa...

Morales
I've been listening to most of the broadcast of the Morales game. His fastball has been great according to the announcers, sitting around 94. His problem has been command of the curveball, which they said he's only thrown for a strike twice up to the 4th inning. The good thing is that he's throwing his changeup consistently, which is the pitch he'll need to become a successful MLB starter.

Morales

3 K

Just one BB is a real good sign for him. The 3 K looks a little low for his stuff, just one outing though.

Jacoby Ellsbury...
Continues to tear apart Double-A pitching to start the season.  2-3 so far with his 5th double in 4 games to raise his average to .471.

Adam Jones is still reaking havoc in Tacoma
hitting .379/.457/.655 in 29 at bats. It'll be interesting to see what he does against Tim Lincecum tonight.

Brett Sinkbeil got rocked tonight
5.1 innings, 10 hits, 7 runs, 6 earned, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts, and allowed a homer.

deals with Phil Hughes Comparisons
I hate how everyone compares him to Clemens because of his size and low ERA in the minors.  I just don't think he has the stuff of a young Clemens.  I see Phil as more of a Roy Halladay type pitcher who will be a very good pitcher that could win 20 games and strike out 180 guys but he won't be a Clemens that strikes out 250 guys in a season.

by Bravesin07 on Apr 12, 2007 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Huh?
I've never heard of a Hughes-Clemens comparison. Youu are right about one thing, he doesn't have the stuff of a young Clemens - which doesn't speak poorly of Hughes. Hughes has a fastball much more similar to what you might see out of the OLDER Clemens, something with above-average velocity but plus-plus movement. The sink on his fastball is impressive, and it reflects in the extremely low number of HRs he's given up so far.

Some performances I noted
Tylver Colvin for the Daytona Cubs: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 SB. Now hitting .429 for the season, 3 SBs. Looked VERY good during spring training and continues to look sharp. He's been a personal favorite of mine since before the 2006 draft - five tool guy with an impressive plate approach.

Same game: Jeff Samardzija goes 5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 HR allowed. Samardzija has only given up 3 ER in his first two starts, although he's not King guys. Personally I'm thinking he continues to look very promising.

Kyle McCulloch (CWS 1st round pick last year) for Winston-Salem: 5 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K. Has a 3.60 ERA through his first couple of starts but not really showing terribly much across the board otherwise. Unlike Samardzija, he doesn't have especially good stuff. Being a heralded prospect from from the Texas program you'd hope he would make an easy run through A ball . . .it doesn't seem to be happening just yet, though.

Another guy I wanted to point out
Somebody I decided to keep an eye on this year is C.J. Henry out of the Phillies system. You probably remember him as a former Yankees 1st rounder who represented the bulk of the returns for Bobby Abreu. Didn't have a very good year at all in 2006, having some injury issues and looking pretty raw otherwise. He's a return visitor to the Sally League, and has enjoyed a nice first week. He's also moved over to 3B these days.

Went 1-4 in the first game of a double-header, with a double. Going into the 2nd game of the double-header he's hitting .333 with 4 doubles and a triple through five games, also has 2 SBs. Still a lot of refinement to be made here, but he's starting to show off that upside too.

Joe Mather
Joe Mather is 2-3 with a couple of homers tonight for the Springfield Cardinals.  He is hitting .455 with 4 homers and 3 doubles so far this year.  he was a 3rd round pick way back when, but is still only 24 and had a decent year in the FSL last year where he hit .270 with 16 homers and 33 doubles.  maybe he is starting to put it together.  this year's Terry Evans?

Another double and homer today.  He's slugging .771 now.

Akron Update
Rodney Choy Foo hit a grand slam tonight, and is now hitting .571 with 2 HR and 8 RBI on the season.  And Scott Lewis pitched 3 2/3 as the starter, not too bad: 2 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K - but was pulled and no word yet as to why.  Maybe still on a strict pitch count, but I thought they were going to lift that this year.

Wright
Chase Wright - another superb outing for Trenton to keep the Thunder atop the Eastern League Northern Division:

7 IP  0 ER  1 BB  1 H  10 K

Kid looks good, but does he stay in AA all season?  Or when Hughes is promoted does he move to Columbus?    Or does he make a move to NY for any reason this year?

Tim Lincecum
Anyone still think there's a reason for Lincecum to be in AAA?

Just a sign of how dominant he was tonight.... Brian LaHair slammed his bat to the ground in anger after striking out in the 6th for the 2nd time tonight.

And for those worried so much about Tim's walk rate and ineffectiveness with pitches... 8 K's to 1 BB in 6 innings and only 75 pitches through 6.

If he can substain that control, the he's ready
But he needs to cut down the walks if people expect him to succeed, or else he'll be another Daniel Cabrera, or if he's lucky, Carlos Zambrano.

But tonight was a good start, let's see how he builds on it.

I'm kinda sad that he cooled off Adam Jones a little though. Just 1-4 with a K? That's gotta be his worse game of the year.

Nice to see Jeff Clement knock another double. He's been stinging the ball in pretty much every game, and they're finally starting to avoid the mitts. Nice little .200 ISOP and a 4/5 BB/K ratio.

by Goose on Apr 13, 2007 1:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Daniel Cabrera and Carlos Zambrano
2 guys who have above-average ERA's for their league. Even last year, Cabrera had an above-average ERA in the AL in by far his most abysmal season to date in terms of control.

There's nothing wrong with a pitcher being promoted to the majors who doesn't have pinpoint control. Lincecum could be a guy who never gets his BB/9 under 3.5, but it won't prevent him from dominating major league hitters if his stuff is on. You can't wait for perfection to promote prospects.

i love lincecum
but how can you criticize a guy by saying he has a chance to turn into carlos zambrano? big Z is a freaking awesome pitcher. the worst ERA he has posted in a full season is 3.41, despite pitching in wrigley his whole career. oh, and he's averaged 210 innings a year, too.

i dont like either comps
big Z and cabrera both bring more extreme groundball stuff then lincecum. I dont think the comparisons work that well.

by npurcell on Apr 13, 2007 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

no
i don't like the comps either. part of it is the groundball thing. for another, zambrano and cabrera are both huge guys, and lincecum is tiny. my point was merely that it doesn't make much sense to downplay a prospect's upside by comparing him to carlos zambrano.

Eric Hurley and others
Eric Hurley went 6 tonight, gave up 5 H, 2BB, 1R, with 7 K for Frisco. His ERA for the year is .82 and his ERA in AA Texas League in 8 starts is 1.69. It's a small sample size, but it's still impressive.

Taylor Teagarden (C - Bakersfield) hit two more doubles tonight and drew another walk. He has 11 BB for the year, and his OBP is now a ridiculous .650, along with a near .700 slugging %. Oh, and he gave up his first stolen base tonight vs. Eric Young Jr.

Former Mets Prospect Victor Diaz is now hitting .462 in AAA Oklaholma after going 2-3 with a double and two walks.

Crowe/McCutchen
Both continue to struggle. I know it is still early, but McCutchen still does not have a hit yet. I hope frustration does not set in and ruin his confidence. It sounds like he has good makeup, but he's only human. Maybe a half a season in High A would not have been too bad.

I thought Crowe was vastly underrated by the experts and would be as good as Ellsbury. Hopefully he gets going soon. Again, it's early, but terrible starts can get in a guys head, especially the guys who are used to being stars and have never really struggled over a long period of time.

I really like both these guys and hope they get going soon.

Indians' Overview!
Hello everyone,

AAA Buffalo - defeated Ottawa (BAL's AAA aff.) - 2-1:

CF Franklin Gutierrez - 1-3, 1 K, 1 PO (first game of '07, returning from a quad injury, I believe.)
RF Shin-Soo Choo - 1-2, 1 BB, 1 SB (.455 so far.)
DH Brad Snyder - 0-3, 2 K (I know it's early, but when you have 8 K in 14 ABs, that's not a good sign, no matter if it's early or not.)
C Mike Rose - 1-3, 1 K, 1 CS! (only reason I include him is because his presence might mean that Victor Martinez might be back sooner rather than later.)
1B Ryan Mulhern - 2-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K (.417 so far; a bit old at 26, but with future question marks at 1B with Garko, Aubrey, and Head, Mulhern might still have a shot, so you might want to keep an eye on him; he does have good power, hitting 32 HRs between High-A and AA in 2005.  Also 3 BB, 2 K in 12 ABs so far, a much better start than Snyder.)

Another error by Luna, this time, a fielding error - that's the main reason he's not in Cleveland right now!

RHP Edward Mujica - 1.0 IP, 2 H (got a DP groundball from Jason Jaramillo to end the game.)

AA Akron - defeated Bowie (BAL's AAA aff.) 9-5:

RF Trevor Crowe - 1-5, 1 RBI, 2 K (2-18, 2 BB, 7 K so far; I too thought he would get off to a better start; don't know if his constant changing of OF positions virtually every game has anything to do with it or not, if it's the cold weather - though it was 57 at game time tonight in Bowie, or if he's just struggling, but being that he hit better than this (.234 with the 2B position change) even last year at AA, I suspect he'll pick it up at some point in the near future.)
CF Brian Barton - 1-5, 4 K (ugh - I know Barton would have a game every so often with multiple strikeouts, even 3 or 4 on rare occasions.)
LF Ryan Goleski - 2-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K (.273 so far.)
3B Pat Osborn - 1-4, 1 R, 1 K (.417 so far.)
SS Asdrubal Cabrera - 1-3, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K (.333 so far.)
C Wyatt Toregas - 2-3, 2 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB (.364 so far.)
DH Rodney Choy Foo - 2-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB (.571 so far.)

LHP Scott Lewis - 3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HR, (2-run shot to Nolan Reimold,) 3 GO, 6 FO, 1 PO (pickoff.)
RHP Joe Ness - 4.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 4 GO, 4 FO
RHP Bubbie Buzachero - 1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 K, 1 GO, 0 FO

Orioles -
RF Nolan Reimold - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K (.409 so far), 1 OF assist (2nd base - threw out Barton,) 1 E (throw)

I have no idea why Lewis was taken out after 3.2 IP; to my knowledge, he was only supposed to have a slightly-less than normal pitch count (I'm guessing around 90-95 pitches,) but I don't think he reached that in just 3.2 IP from that line.  I'll see if I can find out anything and post it when I hear about it - stay tuned!

High-A Kinston - lost to Wilmington (KC's High-A aff.) - 4-3:

RF Jose Constanza - 3-5, 3 R, 1 2B, 2 HR, 2 RBI (.259 so far)
SS Josh Rodriguez - 2-4, 1 BB (.238 so far.)
CF John Drennen - 2-5, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K (.200 so far.)
C Max Ramirez - 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K (.263 so far.)
DH Mike Butia - 0-3, 2 K (.133 so far.)

LHP David Huff - 4.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 GO, 7 FO (2.25 ERA)
RHP Chris Niesel - 2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 3 GO, 2 FO (1.80 ERA)
RHP James Deters - 2.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 GO, 3 FO (2.08 ERA)

Low-A Lake County - lost a doubleheader to Greensboro (FLA's Low-A aff.):

Game 1 - Lost 6-5:
RF Lucas Montero - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 K (.478 - being that he's 22, I'm suspecting he'll be up in Kinston within a month or so.  He's from the Dominican Republic.)
2B Adam Davis - 1-4, 2 R, 1 K (.333 so far.)
C Matt McBride - 0-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K (.500 - cooled off after going 8 for his last 8.)
1B Matt Whitney - 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K (.318 so far - any chance of him being a MLer in my opinion, he's got to keep hitting and force his way back to Kinston soon.)
3B Jared Goedert - 0-1, 2 BB (.294)
SS Carlos Rivero - 0-2, 1 BB, 1 K (.045 - 18-YO looks overmatched; might be at SS-A Mahoning Valley if this keeps up.)
LF Nick Weglarz - 0-2, 1 BB, 2 K (.217)

RHP Carlton Smith - 5.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 HR, 9 GO, 4 FO (gave up 2-run shot after making a fielding error - 2nd time this has happened to him.)

Game 2 - lost 6-5 in 8 innings (supposed to be 7 innings.)

2B David Uribes - 1-2, 1 R, 2 BB (.143 so far for 2006 32nd Round Draft Pick out of Pepperdine Univ.)
DH Matthew McBride - 1-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K (.455)
3B Jared Goedert - 0-4, 2 K (.238)
LF Nick Weglarz - 0-4, 1 K (.185)
SS Carlos Rivero - 2-4, 1 R, 1 K (.115 - I spoke too soon or he heard me!  :-)
RF Roman Pena - 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K (.235)

RHP Steven Wright - 4.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 4 GO, 2 FO - first professional start for 2nd-round 2006 pick out of Hawaii)
RHP Neil Wagner - 1.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 HBP, 1 BS, 1 GO, 2 FO

Not much more info. on Lewis!
Hello everyone,

Talking to some other LetsGoTribe members, it seems Scott Lewis is being held to 70-75 pitches early in the season, and might be built up to around 100 pitches by midseason.

However, it still seems unlikely that Lewis reached that pitch count in just 3.2 IP, especially with only 3 H and 1 BB.  Some are speculating that Joe Ness (the "Untouchable") was supposed to get some significant innings as well, almost like a "tandem starter" idea (though I didn't know the Indians were even considering doing that, if that is the case; I know the Rangers did that a few years back, and still might be doing it - I'm not sure.)

So, in essence, I'm not really sure why Lewis was taken out that early - I haven't seen any reports that said that there was a problem.  Perhaps the early snowouts threw the schedule out-of-whack and the Indians want to be extra cautious with Lewis, especially considering his past injury history.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.

Omar Poveda
It's Low A and he's repeating but he's still a teenager and he's got a projectable frame and some stuff. If he keeps this up we'll be getting more regular updates. Last year he started strong and then faded the last 1/4 of the season. I think fatugue had to have been a factor. We'll see how Poveda does this season.
