Burgess or Heyward

I don't really know if this board is big on the draft but I'll throw this out there anyways.  Of the two bopping HS outfielders in the upcoming draft, which one would you take?  Which one has more power potential?

I have read many descriptions of Burgess launching moon shot after moon shot even against some of the best competition in the country.  On the other hand you have Heyward who clearly has the size advantage at 6'4'' and 220 and a pretty decent track record himself.  Who would you take?

vitters
vitters is the best pure hitter out of the group and plays 3rd base which is more of a skill position than right field.  the others swing it lefty and have more power, but i think i would take vitters and i don't think he will exactly be hurting in the power department down the road.

Burgess
Kid is a prototype RF prospect and his bat speed is reminiscent of Sheffield.

That said, the truly elite preps are Porcello and Harvey - I see each one slipping into the top 5.

Draft Talk
I encourage any and all draft discussion on this site, it's the perfect venue to talk about baseball's next generation of talent. I really think that the MLB draft is in a position to take off (as much as it can anyway) in the next few seasons but it'll take a group of knowledgeable, interested baseball fans to get the ball rolling - sort of a grassroots movement, as it were.

As for the question at hand, I personally like Burgess best at this point. The combination of raw power, explosive (though inconsistent) swing mechanics, 94 mph arm strength, playable speed (6.9 60), and baserunning instincts well beyond his years make for a heck of a total package. Heyward and Vitters are both excellent prospects in their own right and any argument supporting either would definitely have merit.

Speaking of Vitters, I've really been impressed with him and the group of high school third basemen in general this season. My favorite of that group and minor sleeper come draft day is Victor Sanchez from California. I don't think I'll be able to go see any of the top HS third basemen this year in person, but I'd be very interested to see how they stack up against last year's consensus top high school infielder, Billy Rowell (a player who I was lucky enough to see in person multiple times).

What did you think of Rowell?
Since you said you have seen Billy Rowell play in person, I was just wondering what you think of him?

I have his baseball card and he looks like a man child.  Do you think he will stick at 3rd?

Thanks

Billy Rowell
Obvious caveat before I begin: I'm just a guy who watches baseball, so take what I say with a grain of salt. Rowell played a mean shortstop at the high school level - I was very impressed with his defensive game. Having said that, I have definite questions at his chances of sticking on the left side of the infield long-term.

He played a ridiculously deep shortstop at Bishop Eustace, positioning him self so far back that he would stand on the cutoff where infield dirt meets outfield grass at times. I have to figure that he played so deep in order to hide his lack of range and lateral mobility...though on the plus side, he could only get away with playing so deep because of his plus arm strength. Obviously these reasons are why the Orioles see him as their third baseman of the future

Rowell does not lack in athletic ability - the guy moves well enough for a big man and has at least average footwork. Unfortunately, he had a very bad rap around town about not being receptive to coaching, so the conversion to third will be extra difficult if he continues to resist advice.

If I had to guess right this second what position he'd play most in his big league career, I'd guess RF. I think he'll be good enough at third base to stay there in his younger years, but will have to move to the outfield sooner rather than later once he reaches the bigs. To me it comes down to this: either his lack of lateral quickness could be a problem at third OR he could have some crazy natural reactionary instincts that help him stick at the new spot - third base is one of the tougher positions to predict in my mind as it requires such instinctual movements. His arm is plenty strong for the spot, it's a matter of range more so than anything else.

Sorry if I kept going in circles, I suppose it just shows that where Rowell will wind up is still very much open to debate.

Thanks
Thanks Roboz.  It's always nice to hear from somebody who has seen a player in person.

Living in Connecticut I don't get the chance to see many prospects.  Although I suppose I could see Matt Harvey pitch this year.

Thanks again.  I really like Rowell and no matter what position he settles at, I think he will hit.

I'd take Burgess. Less projection with power.

Great Draft!
This is shaping up as most interesting draft.  There's an article in BA today about how it's weak in college RHP's. There are quite a few interesting college LHP's. I'm personally not excited about the college hitters, but maybe some will emerge?   On the other hand, the high school ranks look loaded.  In addition to Vitters, Burgess and Heyward, there's Matt Dominguez, Justin Jackson, a kid named Lambo(I think that's his name) and a whole host of others.  Also the HS pitching ranks look stacked for both RHP's and LHP's.

The Giants are in a commanding position to really restock their farm system in this draft with 3 first rounders and 3 supplemental picks.  I can't wait.

Fear factor! Brian Sabean loves to draft college RHP's.

re
the high school ranks are stacked this year.  power arms from both the left and the right side and good position prospects all over the diamond.  the college position players may be a little weak, but there are some good ones.  matt wieters would be one of the best in any year.  mangini and frazier could be pretty good players.  there may not be a whole lot of college righties that are first rounders, brackman and arrieta are the only 2 i think i would take in the first round at this point, but there are a bunch of guys that are sandwich round/2nd round types.  guys like bryan augenstein, wes roemer, james simmons, sean morgan, brad meyers, and of course the closers josh fields, casey weathers, and eddie kunz.  like you said it is a very good class for college lefties.  david price, ross detwiler, daniel moskos, joe savery, sean doolittle, and nick schmidt are all legit first rounders and so is cole st. clair if he can somehow make it back this year.  brett cecil is another lefty reliever that could sneak in to the tail end of the first rounder b/c he has great stuff.

forgot
forgot to mention when talking about the position players that if the two Tennessee stars JP Arencibia and Julio Borbon come back from their injuries and play like they are capable of they are first round type talents.  other guys who may not be first rounders b/c of the depth of the class, but are pretty good players are josh donaldson (who is absolutely crushing the ball right now), matt laporta (11 walks, 9 HBP, 4 homers, 1 strikeout), josh horton, beau mills, and zach cozart if he starts hitting like last year.

Catchers
I've read that this is an unusually strong class for catchers, both college and HS.  Good catching prospects are about as scarce as hen's teeth so some of them could go pretty high.  I know catching is a black hole in the Giants organization and has been for years.  Of course, I think they should take the best player available regardless of position.

Wieters
Catcher Matt Wieters from Georgia Tech will be the #1 pick in the draft.

Book it!

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.

6'7"?
Isn't Wieters 6'7" or some crazy height like that?  Guessing he'll end up at 1B.  Still, he is a catcher in college.

I think Weiters is
highly regarded as a 2-way player.  Could be drafted as a pitcher.
I ate a Grand Slam @ Denny's yesterday... pooped out a 2 run double today.

David Price
...may have something to say about that.

I'll take that bet.

David Price goes #1

Wishful thinking
I agree, but we'll just have to see.  TB needs pitching bad, but between the depth in the draft, the depth TB has for minor league pitching and financial concerns, it wouldn't at all surprise me to see TB going after a cheaper option with # 1 and adding pitching later in the draft.

Then there's KC.  Do they also pass on him due to money?  Think about it... they have spent a lot on top picks the last few years, especially when you contrast it to their ML payroll.  They just blew a $55 million wad on Meche and will need some financial flexibility in the next few years if they are serious about building a winner around Butler/Gordon/Hochevar.

Hmmmmm..... That leaves my Cubs staring at Price.  The odds may be long for both TB and KC passing on Price, but I do hold out hope as I think it's a reasonable outcome based on what I said in this post.

re
anything can happen in the draft. Just look at three years ago when the consensus top two players of the draft went 13 and 15 (Weaver/Drew) while a scrub went #1 (Bush).

I do think teams learned from SD's 04 blunder and we haven't seen quite as ridiculous cost saving decisions made since. Price won't last to the Cubs, not saying that I wouldn't like to see him in a Cubby uni more than being wasted in KC or TB

by ScottAZ on Mar 9, 2007 4:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That was pretty ignorant...
Wasted in KC or TB? Riiiiiiiiight. I forgot...teams can't turn it around. Too bad Verlander is being wasted in Detroit.

by doublestix on Mar 10, 2007 12:34 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No chance....
TB and KC both pass on Price. Dayton already said he expects to spend money in the draft, and that starts by taking the best available player, that will probably be Weiters if Price is taken #1.

by doublestix on Mar 10, 2007 12:32 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I know
That's why the title was 'wishful thinking.'

Like Scott says, weirder things have happened in the draft.  I don't hold out much hope for Price to fall, but if he does, I think what I posted would explain / will have a lot to do with it.
