Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Edinson Volquez = Roy Halladay

Dallas Morning News reports that Volquez will start the season at High A Bakersfield.  I remember the Blue Jays doing this with Roy Halladay.  Mark Conner was the pitching coach for Toronto in 2001 and is now the pitching coach of the Rangers.  I like the move.  He wouldn't have helped at all this season anyway and this really sends a message to him that he won't make it if he doesn't fix his command problems.

Halladay
dropped down to a low level because they totally revamped his mechanics and didn't want him worrying about results.

wow
Talk about a slap in the face.

And this is completely different from Halladay as mentioned above.

Rays in '08....

I'm going to go in a different direction
I'll say this is a good move. Volquez has all the stuff he needs to be a good major league starter, and it seems pretty clear that the Rangers would love to give him that chance. Still, he has some work to do, especially on his breaking stuff. So really . . .why not send him to a level where he's clearly better than the competition to work on the things that he needs to improve? If he does well and the team likes what they see, I'm sure he'll be back soon enough.

A slap in a face, hardly. This looks to me like it's  a team giving a struggling prospect an opportunity to turn back the clock a bit and develop his talent so that he CAN be a good ML pitcher.

If Volquez turns things around this year, we're all going to be applauding this move. And if he doesn't, then sure, the star is fading. I really doubt he'll fail because of this move . . .but he might just succeed because of it.

Very reasonable
I agree with this completely.  It's wise by Tex to put the kid in a situation where he can both work on developing and have some success.

I expect A+ hitters will be no match for him, and it sounds like the coaches are going to ride him, so there's less concern about complacency.  He knows it's probably his last shot in the organization, and I think if there's anything there, we'll see it--if he irons out his mechanical issues and bolsters his confidence, I think there's a chance they'll push him aggressively and he could be read for the majors by this time next year.

Volquez is Benoit
That's all he is, he doesn't have a dominant like Halladay has in his Curveball.  Halladay still had his Curve when his control went on him he just didn't have any command of anything at the time.  Volquez has a weak breakingball and is a two pitch pitcher.

Wow...
it seemed like just yesterday when I had to convince people he wasn't Pedro Martinez-lite.  How things have changed.

Why not?
He's not really getting anywhere with his command in AAA, so if this serves as a wakeup call, great.  If not, what have the Rangers really lost?
