Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Tim Stauffer. What happened?

This guy was supposed to be the next best thing. He was drafted early first round by the Padres, revealed he had a shoulder injury after being drafted(bad luck SD), and now seems mired at the age of 24 with little luck of making an impact. Can anyone shed some light on this once up and coming prospect?

If I recall correctly
Stauffer was never a hyped that much and was considered safe to be a back of the rotation starter with limited upside. He seems to have failed even at that, which happens sometimes.

I may just not be remembering very well though.

Projected as a nice #3 innings eater, but the injury seems to have sapped his general effectiveness across the board. He was always more of a finesse guy to begin with.

I think it says a fair amount about what he could've been that even given the injury, he's on the fringes of the major league spectrum. He's still young . . .doesn't seem right to me to say he's totally through before 25 when a lot of pitchers don't figure things out until ages 28-31.

Why do you think he's a bust!
Stauffer last year - pitched effectively in AAA, made a few Major league apperances (I think he had a good start against the Dodgers).

Stauffer This Year - is in Major League camp competing for a fifth/sixth starter or middle relief guy.  Plus they still had to keep him on the 40 man roster.

That puts him in the top 10% of prospect pitchers.

Wish I could be there at 24!

Will he be a superstar, most likely not - but maybe a better Franklin Stubbs (had to get a second reference in on Stubbs!).
