Potentially awful news for Marlins

A league source told MLB.com that Josh Johnson has a significant problem with his elbow and could miss an extended portion of the season. The Marlins haven't suggested anything of the sort, but it wouldn't come as much of a surprise. Sergio Mitre, Yusmeiro Petit and Jose Garcia are candidates to win the rotation spot vacated by Johnson.

He's Done
He probably has a similar problem like Liriano because Johnson throws a slider.  That's why future pitchers like Philip Hughes and Homer Bailey are going to be durable because they throw curveballs that are less stressful on the arm.  Jose Garcia is a big time sleeper, if he gets command of his breaking pitches and has good control, he could have a season like Sanchez did last year.  Petit is a AAAA pitcher, not enough velocity, mediocre breaking ball, and an average change.

you are just so right
Every single slider is exactly the same, and Johnson and Liriano must have exactly the same pitching motion.

Hughes and Bailey, on the other hand, are golden just because they throw curveballs, since every curveball is the same.

Come on.

All Those Sliders......
sure cut the careers of Lefty Carlton and RJ short, huh?

Yep
I felt the same about Garcia.  Do you believe he starts in FLA and gets playing time though?

Just to keep in mind!
Hello everyone,

Bravesin07 - you make good points about sliders and curveballs, but keep in mind that Hughes has already had shoulder inflammation, even without throwing a slider, so just because pitchers throw curveballs and not sliders, doesn't guarantee they'll stay healthy.

In fact, you can't guarantee any pitcher will stay healthy no matter what he throws.  There are also pitchers who throw sliders who have had no major arm problems in their careers, so just presuming that curveball pitchers will be durable and slider pitchers will be injury-prone isn't accurate in my opinion.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

Very True about that
A lot of it depends on the delievery.  I don't know how Johnson throws, but the Marlins better be careful or they are going to lose both Johnson and Sanchez.  Sanchez already blew out his elbow once and he doesn't throw a slider and he had arm problems in winterball right?

more bad news
taylor tankersley wont be ready for opening day.

im sure anibal sanchez will get hurt at some point this year too.

silver lining: our new wave of young starters - petit, gaby hernandez, jose garcia, brett sinkbeil, hell even sergio mitre - gets a chance, 1 or 2 of them step up, and in 2008 we have the best of the 06' and 07' squads, with maybe a Chris Volstad or a Sean West thrown in there for the best rotation in the national league.

after we trade dontrelle for rocco baldelli, we have the best lineup in the nl as well,

Ramirez
Uggla
Cabrera
Willingham
Baldelli
Hermida
Jacobs
Olivo

Oh yeah!

We have, I fear, confused power with greatness.

the nl east...
....is going to be pretty intensely competitive this year, with fans of pretty much every team in the division proclaiming themselves among baseball's elite. i'm still waiting to hear from the nationals fans.

p.s., no way do you guys make the playoffs this year. if you did, you'd have to win the world series. and, if you win the world series, your owner would have to have a fire sale. but it's not technically possible to sell your parts off for cheaper ones, given the ridiculously low amount everyone costs now. therefore, your owner would be caught in the extremely awkward position of either having to hold onto a winner (which i don't think anyone would stand for), or having to hold the first "fire sale" where you paid the new team more than the old. frankly, just to avoid that, i'd guess you owner will have you throw games before you make the playoffs and put him in that awkward position.

but maybe i'm just letting my imagination run away with me.

There are always replacement players
they can hire scabs to complete the fire sale.

Or do scabs make more than the current Marlins?

by siddfynch on Mar 1, 2007 9:57 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think....
....the Marlins would have to get an exemption from the Players Union and start paying minimum wage in order to pay a team less. Kids would have the choice of making some extra spending money for the summer by either working at a local drive-thru or being placed on the Marlins 25-man roster.

Why on earth...
would anyone trade Willis for Baldelli?

Trading a #1 SP for a 6-hitter with a bad OBP, declining speed, and an injury history doesn't seem very wise to me.

#6 hitter?
He had a .900+ OPS as a CF last year....
Will Eli be showering in Evian at last?

by Brickhaus on Mar 1, 2007 7:30 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Re: OPS
is .872 the new .900 and nobody told me? Especially in the context you used it close is not good enough. Because your aim was to associate him with the caliber of player that is a 900 OPS player... in otherwards that ends up being players who OPS between 900 and 950 with regularity.

Also, Rocco didn't even have 400ABs last year. He needs to repeat this performance before he has a legit claim to arriving. Afterall, over 1/2 of his 16 HRs were in one hot month.

certainly debatable
depends how you see a #1

by Maverick on Mar 1, 2007 11:10 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

By name recognition....
he probably is, but 3 out of his 4 seasons he's been more of a good #2.

Baldelli the most overrated player in the major
This guy isn't very good, he is a so so fielder and has terrible plate disiplane.

by Bravesin07 on Mar 1, 2007 7:59 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

but but but
he is white and could be the next Joe Dimaggio!

by Galt on Mar 1, 2007 9:37 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Perhaps
But I would also say that Dontrelle is the most overrated pitcher in the majors.

Ha I remember that from a long time ago
He won't ever make an all star team.  To me he's a poor man's Francouer at best.

Baldelli is a future Hall of Famer
The next DiMaggio?  No.  The next Tris Speaker?  You bet your ass.

20 years from now, he's in f***ing Cooperstown.  Bank on it.
