Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Fowler v Hunter

I haven't read too much about Dexter Fowler or Cedric Hunter.....either of these prospective CF's going to make it long-term?  Having looked at John's book on these 2, it appears that they may have a future at some point.  Others have opinions on these 2 guys?  Will they be the CF's in the future for their clubs?  What is the gap between these 2 and Bruce, McCutheon, and Rasmus or any other CFer that comes to mind?

Fowler is one of the best athletes in the game. He is still raw, but has the potential to be a five tooler. He is 6'5" and still filling in. He's one of those guys, that if it all clicks, could be a 30-30 guy with GG defense.

Hunter has a much more limited tool set than Fowler. His only standout tool is his bat and his eye. He doesn't have great speed (solid) so he probably won't be a CFer, doesn't have much power. High end he is a .300+ hitter with very high OB% and 15ish HRs and steals.

Both are a ways off, so neither are a sure bet. We can tell a lot about Fowler this year. If he has a big year he will be mentioned with the elite guys and be a top100 player

my two cents worth
Just for the sake of clarity, Fowler is a five tool player, not a "potential" five tool player.  As John says in his book, a hammer is a tool, but you have to know how to use the tool.  Fowler has a long way to go to translate those tools into skills.

Fowler is more intriguing as a prospect because he has a higher ceiling, but he also has a long way to go to achieve his potential.

As ScottAZ says, Hunter offers a much more limited tool set and therefore less upside.  And he's also a long way off.

So if you're looking for fantasy advice, I think the smarter pick/play is Fowler.  I agree that we should know a lot more about both of these guys 1 year from now.

Power?
Not sure if he can be considered a true 5 tooler until he displays more power. He is 6'5" and it may come when he adds weight into his 180 pound frame, but right now it is not guarenteed to happen.

I like Fowler
I like Fowler a lot more than Hunter because he projects to hit for a lot more power.

I think Fowler is already a top 100 prospect in my proverbial book.

I think Bruce and McCutcheon are at the top of the OF prospect list.  Rasmus in the middle (I'm not a big Rasmus guy) Fowler and Hunter are somewhere after that.

I do think Fowler will move to the front of the pack this time next week.

I meant next year
Next week would be an unbelievable task.

Response
Fowler's ahead of Hunter by a pretty large margin at this point. ScottAZ summed it up pretty well.

Bruce, McCutchen and Rasmus are all ahead of Fowler still, but it's not as big a difference as you might think. It's very, very close between Fowler and Maybin IMO, and I wouldn't fault anybody for choosing one over the other.

I'll agree with that
I might be inclined to go Fowler because he appears to be able to succeed without putting the ball on the ground at Castillo-like rates.

come on guys
Im as big a Fowler supporter as their is (I almost put him as high as 35 or so on my Top 100)...but take him over Maybin? come on...not yet anyway....what did Maybin have to do in his first year to make you guys happy?

Agree
I would jump on Fowler if available in your league. His body-type and style of play remind me of Soriano.  If COL doesn't do something silly like offer an extended contract to Tavares, or overpay for their man-love of Baldelli, Fowler could be in CF in '09.  It will be interesting to watch Fowler and Justin Upton mature at the same time based on their pre-draft hype difference.
