cooper brennan

just signed with the Padres, was injured in Iraq.  gist of the story on MLB.com goes:

"Brannan was recommended to the Padres by scout Brendan Hause, who worked out the Houston native.

'This is a great opportunity for both parties,' Fuson said. 'He's a young and athletic Marine with a solid build, a promising arm and a great breaking ball. The Padres love taking chances on athletic players, and we're excited to have Cooper in the organization.'"

Question is after rehab he's going to be a minor league baseball player.  What do you think his chances are?

PR move
I really believe this is a PR move more than a baseball move.  They brought in Garth Brooks a few years ago.  But I am really glad they brought in an injured veteran and I wish him the best.

Whats that have to got to do with anything?

Agreed
Unless the fact that he lost a finger suddenly turns him into Miner Brown, this has to be a pure PR stunt.  Best I can tell, he didn't even play baseball in high school.

FTA...
Brannan attended Highland High School in Gilbert, Ariz., where he was a three-year letterman in football and baseball.

I realize
it says that in the article, but I went back to box scores for Highland High in Gilbert Arizona from that time period (online newspaper caches) and I couldn't actually find him in any of their boxscores.  I mean, he certainly lettered, I'm just saying I'm not sure he actually PLAYED.

Sorry...
Don't you have to play to letter?

On Dan Patrick show
I caught a little of the interview on the Dan Patrick show today.  He said the grenade went off while in his hand!  I dont see how he have any hand left, or even an arm, after that.  Amazing!  He's lucky to even be alive.  He said the only significant permanent injury was that part of his pinkie was amputated!  I guess they dont make grenades like they used to.

Anyway, I think it's a great story, and I wish him the best.  Even if it was a 'PR' signing, it still sounds like a good idea.
