what do you think
of the Yankees' system?

I'm more interested
in what John thinks of its depth. For instance, no one really talks about a guy like Brett Gardner, but he's putting up Michael Bourn numbers.

Joba et all just aren't interesting at this point. Everything you can say about him has been said. What about the prognosis for Sanchez? Chris Garcia? There are some interesting sleepers like Calzado, McCutchen, and Fortenberry. There are sort of in-between players like Curtis and Corona. There are relative babies such as McAllister, the Almontes, Heredia, Cuello, DeLeon, Pirela, Urena, etc... that are just intriguing as hell.

tigers
any chance of doing a before/after kind of list, just so we'd know where the players lost in the renteria/cabrera trades would've landed?

re
Maybin wouldve been #1, with Porcello #2, Jurrjens #3, and Hernandez #4.  Trahern may have been next and DLC wouldve been top 10 as well.

Now its Porcello alone at the top.

why is trahern a better prospect than eulogio?
personally, i think de la cruz is a significantly better bet to be an above average major leaguer.

re
Trahern has an excellent sinker which yields a lot of ground balls.  He is very durable and has a great pitcher's frame.  The likelihood that he becomes a good big league innings eater is very high.  He is also not plagued by inconsistant command like De La Cruz.

De La Cruz could end up being a dominant setup man, a bust, or somewhere in between.  The probablility that he will never get the consistant command needed to reach his ceiling is high however.

Trahern is the better prospect.  He is much closer to a sure thing and his ceiling is not that much lower than DLC's.  Personally, I think Trahern is a significantly better bet to be an above average major leaguer.

Tigers top 10?
This ought to be the easiest if your list Tiger prospects who are better than average or the most difficult to find even 20 real prospects.

Push back Tiger rankings...
As you have said, The Tigs are barren save for Porcello.  I would suggest waiting on the Tigs as they have some major league assets they are looking to trade for minor leaguers, namely Brandon Inge and possibly Dontrelle Willis if you believe the adage where there is smoke there is fire.

I wouldn't
This gives John the opportunity to do what he sometimes struggles with.

The guy closer to the majors with the lower ceiling, or the guy in the low minors with the high upside.

The Tigers gutted a system, but they gave up a bunch of easily replaceable parts beyond Maybin and Miller.

So let's learn a little more about who they do have in the low minors that they recently signed or drafted.

Also, the Willis rumor was a potential 3 way deal with the Mets (including Pudge going that way).  When it didn't happen that day, it was squashed.  Willis and Pudge are going nowhere as Tigers fans are estatic at the trade.

As far as winning a World Series goes, its hardly a slamdunk, but they're a better team with Willis/Pudge than without.

The Mets would've unloaded a number of specs to get it done, and none of them would've helped the Tigers this year in all likelihood.

Bonderman, Verlander, Willis, Porcello, OH MY!

It was worth it though
The Tigers system may have been gutted, but it was more than worth it. I understand that prospects are highly value now, but the prospects they gave up certainly had question marks (esp Maybin). They have a really strong team right now, although their pen I think is their soft underbelly.

Not to mention...
it's not like they traded for players who were 35 years old. Both Cabrera and Dontrelle are pretty young and the Tigers can possible sign them long-term. I know most people are down on Dontrelle after this last season, and some because they didn't like his 2006 season either. But I still like the kid. He's a LHP they can put in at #3 and he still has a lot of upside. Let's see how he does for an organization that seems to be a little more committed to winning than Florida was.
