Rule 5 Draft at 10AM ET

The Rule 5 draft is today, and it usually only lasts a few minutes.

According to Nationals Farm Authority, the draft order is as follows (number of players on 40-man roster in parentheses):

Rays (38)
Orioles (37)
Giants (38)
Marlins (39) ... if the Cabrera/Willis trade is official prior to the draft (Marlins can draft regardless of trade status)
Reds (39) ... waived Jorge Cantu
Nationals (38)
Astros (36)
Athletics (39)
Twins (38)
Dodgers (38)
Blue Jays (39)
Cubs (38)
Mariners (39)
Tigers (38) ... if the Cabrera/Willis trade is official prior to the draft (otherwise the Tigers are filled at 40)
Mets (37)
Padres (35)
Phillies (39)
Rockies (38)
Diamondbacks (39)
Red Sox (38)

The lastest buzz from Baseball America is that the Padres will trade up to select Barton at #1.

Will there be any Hamilton-type picks this year?

If there is a Hamilton pick
it'd be Jeff Allison.
Todd Frazier for President

crazy risky
but it'd be cool to see what he would do.

what a shame
allison is from the town next to mine (i live in mass) and he was unreal in high school, then turned to drugs.
just hoping for the best from this kid.

i think they are higher up than that....i don't even see them on your list

I think
The list I have only includes teams with room on their 40-man.

The Royals would have to cut someone to makeup a rule 5 pick - I'm not sure if it's too late or not.

by dkdc on Dec 6, 2007 9:45 AM EST up reply actions

If I am the Mets
I hope an arm like Fernando Hernandez falls to their pick.  His curve could come in handy and he is an improvement over guys like Aaron Sele and Darrin Oliver who have been in the Mets bullpen the last 2 years

Lubanski
Is Chris Lubanski available to select? I thought I read a thread that mentioned him and was suprised.

by colinadam on Dec 6, 2007 9:51 AM EST reply actions

Yep
Royals left him unprotected.

by deezle on Dec 6, 2007 9:55 AM EST up reply actions

Yes
I have a hard time seeing him make a major league roster, though. He wouldn't offer much currently.

by doublestix on Dec 6, 2007 9:56 AM EST up reply actions

Pirates...
Just had a selection...so this list isn't right.

by doublestix on Dec 6, 2007 10:13 AM EST reply actions

That list
was from yesterday. Several teams made moves last night/this morning to open up spots

Cards
Also have a pick, because they released Taguchi.

Orioles take Bierd
Giants take Capellen

Nats take Whitney

by Flynn Blake on Dec 6, 2007 11:20 AM EST up reply actions

I dont think anyone will take him....
... and I sure hope noone does, but Eddie Bonine seems to be an intriguing pitcher available. He may not fit well in a bullpen for a year, but he is a 26 year old knuckleballer in the Tigers system.

He showed decent numbers at Erie and supposedly has a high80s/low90s sinking fastball to go with a decent slider, and 2 different knuckleballs, a hard knuckler and a slow knuckler.

Id like to see him stay as an emergency callup for the Tigers for a bit. I think hes an intriguing guy to have around.

THANK YOU!
No KC players selected in MLB phase. Definitely was scared Luby and a few others might be gone.

end of round 1

Mariners R.A. Dickey
Mets Steven Register
Padres Mike Gardner
Phillies Travis Blackley

Nice grab by Cards
they actually might have a spot for Barton, and he's probably the highest-upside position player in the draft.
Vacuums: where sock puppets go to die.

by siddfynch on Dec 6, 2007 10:28 AM EST up reply actions

Whitney
I think the highest upside guy is Whitney (taken by the Nationals).  He had tons of promise when he was originally drafted and some Cleveland papers were reporting he could develop into a Manny Ramirez type of hitter.  The comparison was unfair, but he was finally healthy this year (and moved to 1B), and was raking.

I'm very surprised the Nationals took him since they already have Dmitri Young and Nick Johnson at first.  Not sure how they figure he'll fit into their plans.

by lenred on Dec 6, 2007 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

And add to that ...
the Nationals just signed Aaron Boone.

I agree with your assessment of Whitney but he seems like 26th man on the Nationals 25-man roster

by NFA Brian on Dec 6, 2007 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

Round 2
Nationals Garrett Guzman
Padres Callix Crabbe
Phillies Lincoln Holdkom

No picks in 3rd round

AAA
Rays Rashad Eldridge
Pirates Josh Hill
Royals Ray Liotta
Orioles Ryan Rodriguez
Giants Juan Ciriaco

nobody took lubanski? they must know something i don't know. he looks like a pretty solid prospect from here. for $50k, i'd definitely take a shot on him.

Ray Liotta
he was highly respected a couple of yeard ago----can anyone give me a accurate report of him now.

His stuff fell
off a cliff in 2006 (was sitting mid-80's and got hit hard), and he had labrum surgery last year.  Probably more of a project and hope than anything.

Good For Joe
I'm glad for him.  Too many relief arms in the Giants organization. This could be a good pickup for the Brews and a nice opportunity for Joe.

surprised Allison & Lubanksi
were not taken. I would have liked to see them both get chances in another organization because neither of their current teams seem to think that much of them imo.

by Havok1517 on Dec 6, 2007 10:59 AM EST reply actions

For $50k no
For free a few teams will be interested, once Allison gets released.

by Flynn Blake on Dec 6, 2007 11:14 AM EST up reply actions

50k
has nothing to do with it.  That is a waiver-wire price, plus you can always get 25k back by returning the guy.

I think teams just don't want to try to fit Lubanski or Allison on the roster all year

Can anyone point me to the official list of draft picks? AS usual, the mlb.com site has no news, despite the fact that the draft is over.

Crabbe and Lubanski
I'm pretty surprised that Callix Crabbe fell so far... he seems like an good utility guy, unless his defense is totally brutal.  Not much "upside", but I think he'd be better than the 25th man on most active rosters.  And it's not impossible that he could surprise.

White Sox should have taken Lubanski... they need lefty bats something awful, and the Royals are looking like a team to worry about over the next few years, so weakening them wouldn't be bad.  And I'll be a bit surprised if the Sox finish higher than 5th in their division this year with or without Lubanski taking an active roster slot.

Crabbes D at 2b is fine
Its just that he is not a shortstop.  Hes got a some speed, a good 2b glove and a decent, developing bat

Lahey to the Cubs

by wibadger on Dec 6, 2007 12:25 PM EST reply actions

what happened to Barton?
was shocked he was exposed, not surprised that it ws reported teh Rays would tab him as the #1 overall, and then shocked again when the Rays and many others passed.

it certainly seems that he's a passable, ready to go CFer. I know l read that teams were worried about his knee but, heck, to me it makes him almost better: easily stashable on the DL until healthy, so won't even take up a roster spot necessarily.

is the concern more his mediocre stats? or is that the knee will never get better?

by scooter on Dec 6, 2007 12:55 PM EST reply actions

Barton looked worse this year
than in 2006.  He does have tools but his power, plate selectivity and defense declined this year.  He has excellent speed and a decent arm but it seemed he had trouble getting to balls or throwing effectively.  I don't think many are surprised that he got taken but, even as a 4th OF, he does not look ready at the plate for ML pitching.  I don't look for the tribe to take him back since they really have better options in Buffalo.

by sdtribefan on Dec 6, 2007 6:09 PM EST up reply actions

say what?
Care to explain to me how a guy with a career line of .316/.416/.473 and about a combined 305/401/421 line in AA/AAA doesn't look ready for major league pitching? Maybe not for power, but for average and OBP in MLB he looks just fine to me. You could use the knee surgery as an argument, or cite his apparently lack of power, but how can you say a guy with that kind of career AVG/OBP can't hit in the majors? Guys with .400+ career OBP don't grow on trees.

I suppose the Twins could get a player or two back. But that's really strange.

Yes and no
I expect the Twins will get back two of the three players taken in the major league portion. The three taken in the minor league portion are gone for good.

yes
Minor league Rule 5ers don't come back, but on the other hand they are absurdly unlikely to hurt you.  I wouldn't be worrying about it.  I'd trust the Twinnies that they know what theyre doing when they left whoever unprotected in the minor league version

by nms on Dec 6, 2007 6:06 PM EST up reply actions

Whitney
Why does Washington need another 3b in Matt Whitney when Zimmerman is there? Also seems unlikely he'd move to 1b with Nick J and Meat Young there.

Trade bait?

I won't get married until the Red Sox win the World Series. AGAIN!!

by Shep on Dec 6, 2007 1:06 PM EST reply actions

yeah
as an Indians fan i was a little upset to see Whitney get taken.  I was surprised to see a slugger without an at bat above high A get selected at all.  Then again he did hit 32 homers this year.  Whitney's conversion to first base seems likely to stick as he really can't handle third base.

I'm gonna assume he doesn't make it out of spring training with the Nats unless Young or Johnson get hurt.  Unless this means that Nick Johnson is on the move.

by kaisertown on Dec 6, 2007 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

NickJohnson get hurt?
naaaaw...that'll never happen.

by scooter on Dec 6, 2007 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

He has upside but is a
defensive liability, even at 1B.  He has terrific fast ball power but is not capable of handling breaking balls or offspeed pitching.  I think that even the transition to AA would be tough for him, much less the majors.  Not surprised that he was taken by Nats but I cannot see them stashing him for a year.  With his power potential, I think Cleveland will take him back.

by sdtribefan on Dec 6, 2007 6:21 PM EST up reply actions

Rumblings
Combine Johnson still uncertain status from his broken femur and the fact that Zimmerman had hamate surgery this fall, it sounds like Bowden was looking to hedge his bets.

Though the drafting is a bit more puzzling now that the Nationals have announced the signing of Aaron Boone

by NFA Brian on Dec 6, 2007 1:53 PM EST up reply actions

It wasnt a pick
based on the current roster needs.  There no one in the Rule 5 youre going to count on to help now.  I think the Nats just picked him since he was the highest upside guy available.  Plus I wouldnt count on Young or Johnson to be my 1b of the future

call it the "honorary Jesus Flores dead roster spot"
Joba the.... Apologetic?

by ufoboy90 on Dec 6, 2007 10:24 PM EST up reply actions

Jesus Flores actually has talent
but Tony Blanco was/is a total zero in 2k5.  And Levale Speigner and Tyrol Godwin (Bowden's other Rule 5 picks with the Nats).  We carried worthless Tony Blanco the WHOLE year we were in the hunt for the playoffs and led the division for so long.

Meanwhile on a team hurting for starting pitching, we lost Claudio Vargas and Darrell Rasner to waiver claims so we could keep Blanco while having to resort to starting John Halama down the stretch.

So trying to say there's "meaning" behind the pick may be a stretch.

Register/Bakker
As a Mets fan, what do you like about those two?  I remember a bit about Register from when he was drafted.  Have not really followed his career since then

by mtk52983 on Dec 6, 2007 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

RegiBak
I saw Register at Auburn and with Team USA.  Hes a skinnky kid with solid fastball (current readings say hes at 91-93, which sounds right), a good split (from what I remember), good control and some guts.
I'm not saying I think hes going to be a special big leaguer, heck I'm not even saying he'll make the team.  But as far as Rule 5 picks go I think he has some good talent.  I can see him as a possibly solid middle reliever someday.

Garry Bakker showed a good, hard, low 90s sinking fastball and decent control when he pitched collegiately at Carolina.  Hes a minor league Rule 5er so the odds of him EVER being anything are really, really low, but I can see him having a little chance to have a Kevin Gryboski-ish career.
