Santana to the Angels?

Just read it about a minute ago.

http://www.beloblog.com/ProJo_Blogs/SoxBlog/archives/2007/12/update_angels_j.html

Wood and Weaver and a extra prospect for Santana.

If Im the twins, I probably could do better than that, but that is just me. I really don't have a love or hate thing with Wood. I am not a weaver fan though.

Nothing
That does nothing to address Minnesota's needs.
This is me being polite.

How not?
They have a black hole at shortstop and need a good young pitcher.  If their scouts think Wood can play SS, it fills two holes in a big way.

I'd have to think this through better, but I might actually like this deal better for the Twins than some of the other proposals.  They'd still need a CF, but Dejesus may be on the market pretty soon, and there may be other options available, especially if they're still thinking about trading Nathan.

Pitching
Minnesota has a ton of young pitching. they need offense more than they need pitching.

And Wood isn't a SS.

This is me being polite.

Not a bad offer
They could plug Wood in at 3rd or short and he would be a significant upgrade over Lowrie. Weaver is an upgrade of Lester in my opinion, although I'm sure that could be disputed.  If the 3rd player included is a legitimate prospect, I would have to consider that offer as the Twins GM.

True,
They would still need a centerfielder, but maybe the 3rd player/prospect could fill that role, or maybe a Nathan trade could land them one.

Willits?
With Vlad, Hunter, GMJR, Rivera, and Anderson in the Angels' OF, Willits might not be too badly missed.

I've got my fingers & toes crossed
hoping for this, or the Mariner rumor. Anywhere but the Sauron & Saruman of the baseball world.

Weaver is a definite upgrade over Lester, maybe even Hughes, Wood could play 3B (big hole for the Twins there), hell even SS. I'd ask for Kendrick but the 3rd player could be Sean Rodriguez (a SS) or Terry Evans (OF) both are pretty much ready. Plus they've soured on Jose Arredondo (RP) as well. The longer this goes the less likely Santana is moved now. All those guys on this site saying he would be gone by Tue. Well, it's Tue. Tick tock ...

I'd probably take
Wood, Willits, and Weaver over the Red Sox offer.

by Galt on Dec 4, 2007 3:55 PM EST reply actions

not me
If I were the Twins, it would take Wood, Weaver & Adenhart to make the deal. Of course, I don't like Weaver that much so...

by my dixie wrecked on Dec 4, 2007 4:04 PM EST up reply actions

great
but all they have to do is beat the Red Sox and Yankees.

Adding Adenhart is equivalent to saying that while the Red Sox over Lester, Crisp, Lowrie, etc or the Yankees over Melky, Hughes, etc, the Dodgers should be offering Kershaw, Kemp, and LaRoche.

If you are of the camp that the Twins shouldn't trade him because they aren't getting enough, then that's a different argument.

But adding Adenhart is a HUGE leap in terms of talent going to MINN from what is currently being discussed.

by Galt on Dec 4, 2007 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

I'd take that over
either of the other deals offered.

In my mind....

Hughes>Weaver>>>Lester
Melky>Crisp=Willits
Wood>>>Lowry and Masterson>>>>>>Yankees prospect not on their 'untouchable list

I'm really not that high on Hughes and Melky though.  I still don't see Melky as more than a servicable offensive player, and Hughes' injury history scares the heck out of me.

Looking at things another way:

Yanks: Potential all-star, solid player + so-so prospect
Red Sox: Two solid players, one good prospect, one decent prospect and one so-so prospect
Angels: Two potential all-stars and one so-so player.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

+1
I'd take the Angels offer over the other 2.

Hughes
Hughes' injury history scares the heck out of me.

If all the Yankees are offering is Hughes, Melky and a "mid-level" prospect, this could have been a disastrous trade for the Twins. What if Hughes blows out his elbow or shoulder? Then the Twins are left with less than they would have gotten by just letting him go to free agency.

The way I see it
Hughes >>> Weaver > Lester
Crisp > Willits > Melky
Lowrie + Masterson >>>> Wood >>> Yankees gargabe

Yanks: Potential ace/#2, Crappy player that might be serviceable in the future, garbage
Red Sox: One solid player, two good prospects, one decent/good prospect
Angels: League average pitcher, Potential All-Star but most likely a bust, one serviceable player

Re:
I'll give it a try:

Hughes>Weaver>Lester - there is separation, but not huge IMO
Crisp>Melky=Willits
Wood>>Lowrie + Masterson>>>Yankee throw in

Yanks: Potential #2, fringe OF, garbage
Red Sox: Potential #3, fringer CF placeholder, potential solid SS, potential Mike Timlin setup man
Angels: League average pitcher, Potential All-Star SS with bust potential, 4th OF

Personally, I don't understand why the Yanks don't up the ante and include Ian Kennedy. Just by flexing their financial advantage in the draft they have the power to find Kennedys and Jobas later in the draft than almost any other team. They could go out and spend hog wild on the 2008 amateur draft and replenish the farm.

The latest
Per Buster Olney on the ESPN blog is that the Angels deny being involved in talks for Santana.  For what it's worth.
