You can take one player in rule 5 who do you take

OK-

here is the situation....you our the gm of your favorite team you can take one player in the rule 5 draft.....who do you take, and how does he fit into your teams plans from 2008?

you can take anyone-even if your team has a late selection (suppose you have made a move to get a higher pick)

you can play gm for more than one team if you'd like

Pet peeve
It's Rule 5, not Rule V.

I'm not sure that anyone jumps out at me as being that great, which should be expected after last year's rule change.  Barton seems like the best bet to be a solid contributor, though his upside is limited.

One sleeper pick I like is Aneudi Cuevas.  He had surgery to end last season, so he's someone who could be stashed on the DL for most of the season.  Recently converted shortstop who can get close to triple digits and has a developing slider, but he's only pitched about 10 innings of pro ball.

Plus, then maybe the "Aneudi Cuevas Sucks Forum" would get more traffic.

Twins
If I was looking at this from the Twins' perspective, I would be interested in D'Antona as another twig in the 3B fasces not to mention a 3rd C.

Taking my Bill Smith mask off, I like Lubanski(OF) and Lindsay (RHP).

Twins
Solid bat off the bench... they have the starting corner spots + DH locked up in Young, Cuddyer, Kubel, but have nothing on the bench in terms of a bat.

Shane Lindsay...
As the Mets GM. I would love to see this arm develop after next year.  He could be something special.  He could be a great setup man or a very good SP in a few years.

Mets need all the bullpen help they can get.

Barton's injury
Does the fact that Brian Barton had leg surgery bother anyone?  Does that change anyone's thinking or desire to have him on their team's 25 man roster?

barton
what about the fact that the indians had him repeat AA after he hit .370 there last year. Or they didn't protect or even try to trade him?

Either they know something everyone else doesn't or they are incredibly stupid

by ScottAZ on Dec 5, 2007 10:07 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No offense, but he actually hit .351/.415/.503
in just 151 AA ABs in 2006.

Heelo ScottAZ,

There were solid reasons to keep Barton in AA to start 2007 - one reason was the one I mentioned above; it was a SSS, though the numbers were certainly very solid.

The other main reason was because of who was ahead of him at AAA Buffalo - while OF Jason Cooper and OF Jonathan Van Every could have been DFAed (and Van Every just signed with Boston within the last 7-10 days,) OF Brad Snyder, OF Shin-Soo Choo, and even OF Ben Francisco were all at AAA Buffalo for a good portion of the 2007 season, and while Snyder's track record of success at AA was arguably worse than Barton's, his track record was longer and the Indians needed to find out if Snyder could truly turn into the power threat many thought he could be.  Plus, Snyder is no older than Barton (a month younger than Barton, in fact.)

As for Choo and Francisco, they both were more experienced and accomplished than Barton was, and Francisco is essentially the same age as Barton (Francisco was born in Oct. 1981, Barton in April 1982,) while Choo is essentially a year younger than Barton (July 1982.)  So, essentially, Barton was blocked by prospects that had more established track records, and in Choo's and Francisco's cases, more distinguished track records than Barton's, due to performing well or very well at a younger age at AAA.

Combine that with the fact that Barton only had 151 ABs at AA in 2006, and I don't think it was unreasonable to have him start back at AA Akron to begin 2007.  He didn't spend all of 2007 at AA, and in a SSS, he only hit .264/.333/.333 in 87 AAA ABs, so it's not like he tore up AAA when he finally reached there, though 87 ABs isn't really a large enough sample size to determine his ability to handle AAA, just like 151 ABs wasn't a large enough sample size to determine his ability to handle AA.

Also, if I recall correctly, Barton got off to a slower start at AA in 2007, especially in regards to his relatively weak BB/K ratio, taking him a while to get his numbers closer to the numbers he put up at AA Akron in 2006 (and not reaching those same high 2006 numbers and ratios at AA in 2007,) so overall, I don't think it was unreasonable to have him start 2007 at AA Akron.

In terms of his ability to help at the ML level as a Rule 5 pick, I think he has some interesting tools that could be useful right now - especially his speed (20 SB/9 CS at AA Akron, 21 SB/10 CS overall between AA and AAA in 2007) and his defense (can play all 3 OF spots at an average to above-average level.)  Offensively, he could probably put together some solid games, though I suspect he'll probably struggle a bit as well, especially in terms of BB/K ratio, as he was a bit streaky to start 2007 in terms of having too many Ks and too few BBs.  In addition, he probably won't hit for much power - at his best, he might have a 20-25 HR season or two, but I suspect that won't be in 2008, so Barton will probably not supply much power to whichever team chooses him in the Rule 5 Draft.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

re
guess it could all depend on the right situation for him. I never though Dan Uggla would amount to much after he was plucked from my Dbacks, but sure enough, he is the epitimy of the new age offensive 2b. Barton could find the right job and run with it. Maybe the Mrlins since they basically have a AAA team and are starting guys like Eric Reed and Joe Borchard (!!!) in CF

Brian Barton
Because I think he's the best player available, and you should generally draft on basis of that rather than need. So, this works for everybody.

by GuyinNY on Dec 4, 2007 12:53 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Barton, agreed
If he's still available, take him regardless of need - he's basically a free pickup, can be used as a chip for better help elsewhere.

I believe the Rays have first pick, right?   Barton would even help fill void from Dukes/Yong departure.  Maybe that's even why they felt it was time to deal Dukes - they have first crack at Barton,  and have basically opened up a roster spot for him.

Diory Hernandez
If i was the Royals, I would take Diory Hernadez and let him compete with Tony Pena Jr. for the starting SS role.

by SBcaptain2 on Dec 4, 2007 12:56 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Same with me for the Cubs
If we could get Diory, I'd take a shot.  He could fill the utility infielder role and could ostensibly compete for the shortstop position (I mean, competition is Ryan Theriot and Ronny Cedeno, not exactly worldbeater at the moment).  He's arguably as intriguing as any realistic shortstop option out there for us.

If i were KC i would plug him in as my utility INF next season....he has some promise and could have value if Pena falters or for when grudz goes down or leaves KC
