Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Winter Meetings Thread

I thought it might be a good idea to create one thread to discuss the Winter Meetings. There should be several deals made, and not all of them will be worthy of their own threads. Instead, we can discuss them all here.

First up....

MLB Radio is reporting that the White Sox will acquire Carlos Quentin from the Diamondbacks for Chris Carter.

Chris Carter?
Isn't he Red Sox property right now?

no there is another one who is 21 years old
Great deal for Arizona, Carter has huge potential.

Did not know that..
no matter, if this is all for Quentin my mind has changed a little about Ken Williams' trade ability. I still feel Quentin is a future star in the making who will have a few all-star appearances.

Elijah Dukes
According to someone who was eavesdropping on Jim Bowden, as reported by the St. Pete Times, it sounds like a Dukes to the Nationals trade still may be in the works (even after the trade for Milledge).

If true, I'm not surprised on the Rays' end, even after trading Young.  The FO seems to have a very low tolerance for rabblerousers and a need for good character (which would also be a reason for trading Young, and explains the draft philosophy over the past couple years).  I guess the Nats could use 4 outfielders, but one would think they'd try to plug some other holes first.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

Is this is true
The Nats have a huge boom or bust OF. Either the Nats will have a nasty line-up in five years, or will be in constant rebuild. Milledge, Dukes and Pena is sick potentially

Most combustible clubhouse
Since the '86 Mets, probably.

Seems like Bowden is trying to make the Nationals into the Oakland Raiders of the NL.

if memory serves....
...the end result was just fine for that '86 Mets ballclub...

not that the 'Nats are anywhere close to the '86 Mets

Milton Bradley
is still a free agent and would probably come cheap.  Any chance they could trade for Jeff Kent?

by Scott Proctor Fan Club on Dec 3, 2007 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

if they get dukes
i'd imagine they could put out a better LB corps.  maybe even a better offense.

Estrada
If the Mets non-tender Estrada, the Nats can pick him up on the cheap.  Although he's not really combustible, more lazy and fat.

Minaya
Offered Estrada "for free" as part of the Milledge deal, and the Nats passed.

Ah, wasn't aware of that.

Maybe they are counting on the fact that they can get him cheaper once he's non-tendered?

I don't know much about the Nationals - who is their main catcher now?  Flores?

by tyguy20204 on Dec 3, 2007 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

Read it
In one of the reports on the Milledge deal, not sure which one.

Not quite sure what the Nats will do...Flores is the only C currently on the roster, but the rumor is that Washington may be shopping for a free-agent catcher like LoDuca or Barajas.

If he's really cheap, I actually think Estrada could be an OK pick-up for Washington on a 1-year deal.  His lack of power wouldn't be as much of an issue in RFK, although his horrendous CS rates last year, if they continue, would be a big problem.

RFK
I believe the Nats new stadium will be ready for '08, so no more RFK (thank God).

Rule 5
What day does the Rule 5 draft take place on?

Wow
In my opinion this is a huge deal for the White Sox.  I agree with an earlier post that folks are way too down on Quentin.  I think we can all agree that he's a plus fielder, whether it's LF or RF...heck, he could play a little CF too.  He also still projects to hit around 270/380/500 with about 25-30 homers annually.  He'll also control Quentin's rights for (I think) another 4 years which is right in the thick of his prime as Quentin just turned 25.

Assuming the Sox land one of Jones, Rowand or Cameron, that's one hell of a defensive OF and a very nice offense over last year's model:

Cabrera
Quentin
Konerko
Thome
Dye
CF
Fields
Pierzynski
2B (Uribe?)

Not bad at all.

Bench?
Do we all think he will actually go to the bench?  I am assuming he is dealt to allow Fields in the line up.
