Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Jennings or Schafer

who do you feel has more upside? Jordan Schafer or Desmond Jennings? who would you want and what type of numbers do you expect in each players prime? I feel this is a good battle between the 2 as they are 2 of my favorite prospects..but I have to go with Jennings as I see a guy who will hit .300 with a .380 OBP 20-25 homers and 50 steals as well as possible double figures in triples in his prime. Both play excellent CF from what I understand..comments!!!!

Jennings
On my top 500 prospects list, I currently have Jennings at #30 and Schafer at #40, so that's the gap I see. I think Jennings is the more well rounded prospect, while Schafer has the bigger power outlay and potential. With that, Jennings isn't going to strike out nearly as much and I think he's going to draw more walks. I think if I had to come up with 3 slash lines for them, once they are both settled in the majors, I see

Schafer: .265/.350/.475
Jennings: .290/.380/.465

I'll take the better contact hitter with the better eye at the plate and sacrifice some power, especially considering the lineup he's likely to be a part of in Tampa.

haha
I actually have 620 guys listed right now. In the process of trimming it and then tweaking the order. Should be done in a month or so, and some of the info is top secret because of people who read this site and participate in the same fantasy league as me. But I plan to write up the full Top 500, and then post brief blurbs on my top 200 guys and why I put them where I did. I'll probably do the writeup on my blog and post the link here when it's ready.

Jordan Schafer
I actually had a chance to see both guys play in Rome IMO Schafer is better especially defensively. He see the ball of the bat extremely well and runs good routes to get to the ball as well! The only other CFer that I've seen do this on a consistent used to patrol CF in ATL!

Offensively, both guys had great seasons but Schafer put up great numbers even in Myrtle Beach and if any of you have ever seen or heard about that stadium would know that it's a pitchers park. The wind always blows in off the ocean and robs guys of many hit. Schafer had a mediocre showing stealing bases but this guy can fly and will definitely get better at stealing bases. The only flaws in his game at this point is base stealing and strikeouts. My projection for him full potential is .300 AVG/20-25 HR/80-90 RBI/25-30 SB.

full potential 80-90 RBI
is that in a good lineup or a bad lineup?

by wily mo on Dec 28, 2007 12:04 AM EST up reply actions

Wow
Not disagreeing with you pal and, I havent seen Schafer play like you have. In fact, yours is JUST the kind of first-person account that I really respect but, I'll say this, if he really is that good that's a Top 5 prospect isn't it? If not it's darned close anyways right? If he can chase flies like AJ and hit with that kind of sock that makes him a better prospect that Ellsbury doesn't it? In your eyes at least or, am I wrong?

by casejud on Dec 28, 2007 12:33 AM EST up reply actions

Well............
My projected numbers are with him reaching his full potential. Now Schafer still has a few question marks such as base stealing, K's, and he still has to follow up this past season with another great season but as far as the Ellsbury comparsion you can't compare them Ellsbury is 24 Schafer is 21. Schafer still has some things to work out at the plate but if you ask any scout plus I've seen it with my own two eyes the way this kid plays defense is nothing short of amazing!

Either / Or
I think Schafer will be better defensively based on how scouts rave about his D, but Jennings will be at least slightly better offensively.

I would rather have Jennings on my fantasy team and Schafer on my real baseball team.

One point to note is that while they are very, very close in age, Schafer was doing his hitting last year at Coastal Federal Field, a level above Jennings in the Sally League, so it is very difficult to really conclude who will be better offensively.  I think Jennings will strikeout less, but as Schafer is kind of a converted pitcher, he may still be have more room to improve than Jennings.

Agreed
Although they both started out in the Sally League Schafer was moved up and performed extremely well while making the move but both guys hopefully will turn out to have great careers. How about for fun lets add Gorkys Hernandez, how would he match up with those two guys?

by Jay212033 on Dec 28, 2007 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

Hmm
I think Gorkys is at least one, probably two tiers below both guys. He's basically a contact hitter who doesn't draw many walks and has no real current power. He's mainly projection at this point.

Hernandez vs Martinez
"I think Gorkys is at least one, probably two tiers below both guys. He's basically a contact hitter who doesn't draw many walks and has no real current power. He's mainly projection at this point."

At least Gorkys has already "proven" that he can play. He was the MVP of his league last year. All Martinez is is hype and projection at this point his numbers have not shown anything at this point but he's ranked higher than Schafer and Jennings.

Uh
I like Gorkys too but Martinez had nearly the SAME ops in AA as GH had in A-ball and he's a year younger.

martinez numbers in the Eastern league may niot jump out at ya but, he experienced some sucess.

I agree..I have a hard time getting excited over guys who havent really done anything at the minor league level(Gomez and F-Mart)..at least Schafer and Jennings have had success

by NYSOX on Dec 28, 2007 8:52 PM EST reply actions

Gomez
...had a FINE season in the Eastern league just a year ago man.

I like Schafer and Jennings too though but, Gomez has had sucess at a higher level than they have so I dont know exactly what you are talking about. Gomez was a league average offensive performer in his time in AAA as well this year.

Don't let my facts interrupt your Mets hating though :) If thats what it is.

Gomez and Martinez
I mean they may turn out to be awesome players but what I'm saying is that their production so far does not warrant all of the attention that they are receiving! OK F-Mart played in AA at 19 but his numbers were mediocre which tells me that he's being rushed! Even when he was in a ball his numbers were not eye-popping so I'm just not understanding where all the hype is coming from.
