Jim Callis Chat

On a chat today on ESPN.com, Jim Callis presented his top ten list:

  1. Jay Bruce, of, Reds
  2. Clay Buchholz, rhp, Red Sox
  3. Joba Chamberlain, rhp, Yankees
  4. Evan Longoria, 3b, Rays
  5. Clayton Kershaw, lhp, Dodgers
  6. Mike Moustakas, ss, Royals
  7. Colby Rasmus, of, Cardinals
  8. Cameron Maybin, of, Marlins
  9. Travis Snider, of, Blue Jays
  10. Homer Bailey, rhp, Reds
Obviously, the outlier on this list in comparison to our list is Moustakas.  I, along with many others, were pimping Moose early but were shot down.  It will be interesting to see where BA ranks him this offseason and what he does this coming season.

They Are Really High On Mous
He was rated as the top hitter for average and the top hitter for power in this draft.  If that comes true, and he can keep himself from playing 1B or LF, he will certainly be very valuable (no matter what position he ends up at)...

Interesting
that he rates Mike Moustakas over David Price.

Re: Price
Justin (Nashville): Moustakas in your Top 10 but no David Price?

Jim Callis: (2:40 PM ET ) Price was No. 12. I just really, really, really think Moustakas is going to rake.

he's really going out on a limb
for a guy who has next to nothing in terms of pro experience.  if Moustakas doesn't turn out, Callis should feel pretty dumb.  he's got him higher than a lot of really good young hitters with solid records in the minors.  I'm just a little surprised...

i bet Moustakas will not be as good as people
think.  I mean he wasn't even the top player on his team until his senior year.

Eh?
Kind of a weak argument.  What's more important, the present or the past?

Do you hold it against Price that Alvarez was considered the best prospect at Vandy?

by deezle on Dec 26, 2007 6:02 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Well
Alvarez is going to go number one too ...... so why would anyone hold that against Price.  I actually kind of agree with bravesin and believe that if Moose is a top 10 (or maybe even top 20) prospect than he is all hype.

Meh
Moustakas is an awfully good prospect, but yeah, call me a skeptic about putting him that high.

2 players in his top 50, but he thinks the
A's should have gotten more for Haren? They are actually in his top 30.

Tabata
that is about what I was expecting. Chris Kline seems to be a skeptic, but John Manuel loves Tabata too. He will probably be in the BA top 25.
Todd Frazier for President

Brett Anderson
I can't really comprehend what Callis' argument for Brett Anderson at #21 would be.

by McLovin on Dec 27, 2007 5:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

where did he put fernando martinez
I'm shocked Gomez is in the 20's.

by Bravesin07 on Dec 26, 2007 6:07 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

is it gonzalez or gomez?
because in his chat he ranked gonzalez at 28

by rayver723 on Dec 26, 2007 6:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

sorry about that
It is Gonzalez and not Gomez.

by Trader J on Dec 26, 2007 6:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

higher for anderson than i expected

Bo (Honlulu, HI): Did any of the A's make the top 50?

SportsNation Jim Callis: Before the trade, no. But I have Brett Anderson at No. 21 and Carlos Gonzalez at No. 28.

maybe bean shouldve gotten a scherzer, but if only those 2 work out and the rest only turn into avg mlb players its still a pretty good haul

Re: Moustakas
His hit tool appears to be very good, but everything else (arm/glove/running speed) is average or below.

by samjjones on Dec 26, 2007 10:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

arm??
might want to check that.

by wily mo on Dec 26, 2007 10:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Check the video on MILB
His arm is nothing special, and he doesn't run well.

by samjjones on Dec 29, 2007 12:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

uh huh
When the consensus is that he has an 80 arm...yea. And hitting 97 off the mound...

by doublestix on Dec 29, 2007 4:56 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Also
I've never read that his glove was bad and I don't think that I've read that he was a below average runner - just that he probably doesn't have the range for SS...

by Dfarth on Dec 26, 2007 11:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

mouse
he's a pretty big boy.

by npurcell on Dec 26, 2007 11:56 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

6-0, 195
That isn't that big...

But yes...his only below average tool is his speed.
