Deolis Guerra

What do you think about his future??

here's a scouting report from baseball america..

Strengths: Guerra has two present above-average pitches that could become well above-average. His fastball had below-average velocity for most of his first season, but now it ranges from 89-94 mph and touches 96. He features excellent arm speed on his changeup, his best offering since he signed, and it should become a big league out pitch once he commands it.

Weaknesses: While Guerra's curveball remains a below-average pitch, he has shown an ability to spin the ball and it projects as an average offering. At 18, Guerra still is learning the finer arts of pitching, such as holding runners, fielding his position and pitch sequences.

The Future: Guerra has thrown just 179 pro innings and has plenty of projection in his big-shouldered frame. The Mets have monitored Guerra's workload carefully, and he has plenty of projection in his big-shouldered frame. His next goal will be to stay healthy and pass the 100-inning level.

~I love the kid.. Not to many 18 year olds are 6'6 200 pounds topping out at 96 MPH...  I think pre-season 2009 he'll be a top 10 prospect in baseball, but that's just me.. The kid is an absolute beast..

He's mostly hype at this point, and the age to level is the only thing he's got going for him. His control was better this year, the strikeouts weren't, he allowed a lot more hits, and more importantly, his HR rate went up. He's a Top 100 prospect mainly because he's still so young, but I see a back of the rotation starter, possibly a 7th inning reliever down the road.

Ruban Quevedo 2.0
all hype no production.

no production?
2.20 ERA in A ball at age 17 isn't good enough for you?

The only reason why he had an ERA in the 4's was because of some injuries he faced this year.. Also the Mets put him on an even stricter pitch count after the injury..

Guerra...
Saw him in the futures game of 2007.  When I first saw him, I didn't know it was Deolis Guerra.  My impression: Well with 89~92mph fastball and okay curve, how did he make the futures game?  Then one of the announcers said his name, so I went: Oh, THAT"S that Mets 17-yrs old top guy.  To be honest, I was real excited with him with his young age in relatively high level, but I don't know what will happen to him when he reaches AA or AAA.  It wasn't like he was hitting more than 92mph as often than I had expected in that future's game (mostly 90~92).  He's gonna have to bring his velo up to more 92~94mph range than I'd call him a real deal. There are some prospects with less velocity who thrived on lower level, but destroyed in higher level (Kirk Saarloos is one of the exceptions)

And with an injury showing at that young age, the sad thing is that he could get hurt in near future.  Good luck to him

velocity
ive read reports that hes never hit the mid 90s before and is more in the 89-91 range all the time. considering the guy has had multiple injury issues this year and has no breaking pitch, i wouldnt hype him up too much (although the mets will, he and niese are all they have left in the way of projectable starters, pre 2007 draft)

by PooNani on Dec 23, 2007 6:39 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

hmm..
everything i've seen is he was 90-92 getting it up to 94 when needed, and after the injury he was more 89-91 getting it up to 92-93

O and Kevin Mulvey is a pretty good prospect himself.

Mulvey is average at best
He has a poor K/9 and no plus pitch.  I'm not sure Mulvey will be even better than Dave Bush.

yet
I'm sure you used to think Chuck James could be an Ace.

"He has a poor K/9" he's not a strike out pitcher, so why should it matter he doesn't have the best K/9??

"no plus pitch"

Maybe not yet, but he has 4 average pitchers 2 of them not to far away from being plus..

You give me a 23 year old who can locate 4-5 pitches, I'd be very happy..

Give the kid some time soon enough his sinker will be considered plus, and so will his slider.

baseball america scouting report

Strengths: Mulvey throws four pitches for strikes and keeps everything down. His fastball, which sits at 87-91 mph and touches 94, features good sink and run. He dominated righthanders, limiting them to a .224 average and no homers. His mid-70s curveball with 11-to-5 break and his low-80s slider both are average pitches, and at times his slider is a put-away offering. His changeup shows signs of being average. His competitiveness makes his whole greater than the sum of his parts.

Weaknesses: Mulvey has trouble against lefthanders because he can't work them inside easily. At times his changeup is too firm. He has lost 2-3 mph off his fastball from his days at Villanova, but he could gain some of that back as he gets accustomed to the pro workload.

The Future: He'll open 2008 in Triple-A, but Mulvey could get a look in the rotation by midseason. He projects as a No. 3 or 4 starter.

again I'm sure all of your "thoughts" are biased because you hate the Mets.

If he wasn't a NY Mets prospect
nobody would be talking about him.

Prespective
A kid right out of HS putting up these numbers would be well regarded.

Is he a sure thing ace... Hell no.

But he is someone I would like to have on my team and I thinkt heir is a chance he could continue to improve to be that ace.

exactly
I'm glad some people realize that there's no way to know what Guerra will or won't be. He's 18 years old and has a huge 6'5 frame. We don't know where his velocity will end up. It jumped about 3 mph between 2006 and 2007 and we don't know if that's it or if he'll throw even harder this year.

The only thing Guerra has proven is that he can throw strikes and has a plus changeup. But there's nothing he's proven he can't do, either. There are questions about his velocity, durability, and breaking ball. All of those issues might be resolved in 2-3 years of growth and experience. Or none of them might be. Just have to wait and see what he turns into.

he is no julio teheran
who is younger, already throws harder and has an out pitch.

Huh?
Did you actually read the summary that said he had a killer changeup?
