Possible Offseason Transactions

I was just curious who we thought were going to get traded and for what? Bedard to the Reds/Dodgers/Mariners/etc., Bay to the Indians/Padres/etc., and anyother possible deals. Who is most likely? Who will they be dealt to? Who will be returned in the deal? Who gets the best end of the deal?
I think the Tigers gave up a lot less than the Marlins could have gotten for Cabrera and Willis if they seperated them. Miller isn't a prospect like Bailey or Cueto and I think the Marlins could have gotten one of them in a deal.
I also feel like the A's must really like Gonzalez because theres a possiblity they could have gotten Hughes or Lester in a deal for him.
What do you think so far about trades?

I'd Still Say Santana
I can't see the Red Sox, Yanks, or any other potential suitor paying as much as they're willing to pay now for him, and I think the Twins are backed into a corner and have to move him before he gets antsy and decides not to give any of the teams pursuing him the negotiating window they're looking for.

Agreed
But there is a possibility that some of the offered prospects for Johan don't start 2008 the way they are expected. Like Ellsbury slumping or Hughes losing some games early and the Yanks slipping out of contention, and the Twins could get even more than what these teams are offering now. (This also goes the other way but...)

Bedard has to be traded
His trade value will probably never be higher than right now, and he's not going to help the Orioles compete over the next two years.

The trade talks may drag as the Orioles try to push for more talent, but I firmly believe he will be traded.

Blanton
Makes no sense to trade Haren unless you are going to go all the way with the rebuild.

+1
you just know Beane is going to find someone to overpay for blanton and completely restock the minors.

Anthill?
LOL!  Yeah, Billy is God, huh?

Maybe
They wait on Blanton. I don't see how Oakland could possibly compete this year but maybe a team will be willing to over pay come the trade deadline. A healthy Harden could garner something also at the trade deadline.

overpay?
If Blanton is a workhorse with league average numbers that is equivalent to the deals that will be handed out to the C.Silva types. Probably 10 million per year for 4 years would be an estimate of the free agent value.

Everyone wants a top prospect to be a superstar. But when drafting you'd be happy if your 1st round pick turned out to be a solid player and save you from spending $40 million.

Prospects are much over-rated over solid-average players IMO.

I'm thinking Houston Street As Well
Billy has traded many a closer away in the past and, if they are going into rebuild mode trading Street makes a lot of sense.

Agree
They aren't going anywhere for the next 2-3 years without Haren anyway, they might as well go all the way with the rebuild.

bedard.
i've seen an o's message board where several reliable-seeming insiders (i.e. they called the tejada trade several hours before it hit the media, etc.) are saying that bedard will, for a fact, be traded, best offer gets him.  so - blanton seems almost equally inevitable, but i'll go bedard.

It would make sense but..
This was put on mlbtraderumors.com
I want to see Bedard a Red but I don't think it makes as much sense for them as people are saying. He is still cheap and though he is closing in on FA's he is still the type of pitcher the O's could build around. If the would deal Roberts and dump all of the bad contracts and just get a few prospects with Loewen, Penn, Weiters and a few others possibly panning out they really aren't as far as they would seem from winning.

Zrebiec On Bedard, Roberts
The Baltimore Sun's Jeff Zrebiec was recently named Rumor Royalty for the Orioles.  Here's the last in a series of questions we asked him.

MLBTR: Erik Bedard and Brian Roberts are elite players under team control through 2009. If you had to guess, will both be playing for the Orioles on Opening Day 2008?

Zrebiec: Yes, I would guess that both will be Orioles on Opening Day. I've been surprised about the lack of trade buzz surrounding Roberts. I can't help but think that it is because O's owner Peter Angelos has already nixed one deal involving Roberts last year and has made his fondness for the second baseman known. I just think Roberts means more to the Orioles than he would to any other team and I don't see MacPhail moving him unless he's totally overwhelmed. And even then, good luck convincing Angelos to sign off on the deal.

Bedard is a little trickier. MacPhail and Mark Pieper, Bedard and Roberts' agent, have been talking "conceptually" about an contract extension for Bedard. I think people in the organization are split on whether they should secure long term the team's first legit ace since Mike Mussina or trade him and get multiple major league ready young players in return to a roster that is badly in need of them. If Bedard's contract demands aren't reasonable, that could make their decision for them. But even if that's the case, I don't see the O's in a hurry to do anything since Bedard is still under contractual control for two more seasons.

breaking news: 5-way trade
twins get bedard, blanton
o's get santana
A's get bay
pirates get fuentes
rockies get nathan

Fuentes
This, in my opinion, has been the longest lasting rumor and is bound to happen eventually.  The Rockies were fine without him for portions of the 2007 season and he appears to have lost his job as the Rocks closer.  I also think the market is ripe for a closer of Fuentes' ilk and believe that a change of ballpark and team could really help him in free agency.

Possible suitors: Yankees, Tigers, Rangers, Mets, Braves, Cardinals, Cubs and Padres.

I see player and job vacancy matches at essentially each team here, the only issue is the lack of closing job vacancy, so Fuentes may be unhappy.
