Brag away...Fantasy Roster

there's a lot of people who do play fantasy baseball with rosters that include minor league players.  that's how i first found this site.  i have a lot more interest in what goes on now than just the ROI for my dynasty teams.

i haven't been a frequent poster here, mostly because i usually see someone already has written something along the lines of what i'd contribute.  but i do think this site is valuable to people for more than just the facts and minutia about their favorite team or players.  and i know team owners all think they're the best thing that ever happened to a league.  so...

around that...post your best roster.  i have 4 teams, and some of them have taken massive amounts of work to bring to respectability.  the roster below is the only one over which i had control from the beginning.  it's a little different than the others in that we all started with a mlb roster and system, then drafted from the 10 remaining mlb clubs to fill out rosters.  teams were taken as available.  i joined with the pirates and twins off the board.  i wanted to go young with upside rather than established.  so i took tampa bay 3rd.

in the draft i got felix hernandez with the 12th overall pick (hitters went first...thank God), then got tulo and lincecum in the next two rounds.

i just traded lincecum for justin upton earlier this week and my roster now stands like this:

Star-divide

Catcher: Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Chris Iannetta
1B: Todd Helton, James Loney, Kendry Morales
2B: Kazuo Matsui
3B: BJ Upton, Evan Longoria, Akinori Iwamura, Ty Wiggington
SS: Troy Tulowitzki
OF: Carl Crawford, Delmon Young, Justin Upton, Adam Jones

SP: Scott Kazmir, Felix Hernandez, Yovani Gallardo, Jeff Francis, James Shields, Jason Hirsh, Jarrod Washburn, Dustin McGowan, Andy Sonnanstine, Kevin Slowey, Mike Pelfrey

RP: Brian Shouse, Jesus Colome, Andrew Brown, Jonathan Meloan

I'm without a closer, and could just some upgrading in the RP department, but i have moveable pieces to do that now.

so...yeah...i like this team going forward.

it would be cool if we could take all our teams and put them in one league...sort of "run what ya brung"

Yep
it is a dynasty league, long term, no salaries, no limit on the keeper, very simplistic

The league I joined happened to have a lot of teams who were very similar in talent, so I traded Dice K and Beltran, as well as Ichiro, and ended up with Braun, Bruce, hochevar, Gallardo, Briggy, Tabata, Clement, Adam miller, and several first rounders

Some smaller deals, too, but when everyone is worried about the current squad they're willing to trade away the prospects

by Jgaztambide on Dec 14, 2007 5:24 PM EST up reply actions

that's definitely sweet
but 13 teams definitely helps.  i'm trying to stick to 20 now.  i'm in one 14 team league that i love...will stay there...but 20 is so much more competitive.  30 would be interesting if you could ever find 30 committed owners.

but that's a helluva team.

id give this roster
a B+. not a great roster--as you said, you dont have   a closer, but ur only good reliever (as of now) is meloan. the others are either a LOOGY (shouse) and two crap relievers

I like your outfield depth, as well as your SS and 3B positions. 1B isn't bad, but it could be better, and 2B is a weak spot. your catchers aren't guarantees to come out of spring training as starters, mind you, though salty has good upside and the best chance.

by bobbymcnally on Dec 14, 2007 5:11 PM EST reply actions

i'm pretty sure
salty has the starting job.  iannetta was a waiver wire pickup last season.  had a spot and thought i might stash hiim away for a year or two...see what happen.

yeah, when i drafted i skipped relievers altogether, except for meloan.  year to year it seems like someone is new and available.  tb didn't have it's closer situation in had last year when the season began.  but again, i figured i could grab a guy the next season or maybe trade from my depth.

I was justing writing this...
for a new diary, but saw this one before I clicked submit, so I will just copy/paste what I had here:

Someone mentioned in another thread (sorry, forgot who it was so I can't credit them) that it would be interesting to see some of our fantasy/sim rosters. We all see what the rosters posted by occasional bloggers, but rarely the regular bloggers here. So let us have it... I think it would be fun and could help us understand the types of players/roster building that others like.

I only have one team, a DMB Simulation keeper team. League started before the 2003 season, and each GM was able to take over one team and their roster. We started with each team's starting salary cap, and they have been adjusted yearly based on a standard yearly increase, win totals (improving or regressing), Wild  Card, Division Titles, World Series wins and appearances. I took over the Cubs, mainly so I could have Mark Prior (QUIT LAUGHING!)... Each team can have 50 players total on their reserve and active rosters, minor and major leaguers.

I only have one division title, and that was in 2007, but I have never had a losing record. My current roster (we are starting free agency next month, so it's slim) and how I obtained them:

Pitching:
Craig Breslow (trade)
Neal Cotts (trade)
Aaron Cook (trade)
Roy Halladay (trade)
Michael Hinckley (draft)
Phillip Humber (draft)
Jon Leicester (inherited with team)
Tim Lincecum (draft)
Chris Mabeus (draft)
Justin Pope (trade)
Mark Prior (inherited)
Nate Robertson (trade)
Ricardo Rodriguez (trade)
Matt Roney (trade)
Jonathan Sanchez (trade)
Rafael Soriano (trade)
Huston Street (draft)
Justin Verlander (draft)
Carlos Villanueva (draft)
Matt Wise (trade)

Hitting:
Benjie Molina (signed)
Brad Ausmus (signed)
Mike Lowell (signed)
Bernie Castro (trade)
Tony Abreu (draft)
Jason Bay (trade)
Joey Gathright (draft)
Franklyn Gutierrez (trade)
Nic Jackson (inherited)
Jackson Melian (inherited)
Rene Reyes (trade)
Endy Chavez (signed)
Nate Frese (inherited)

As you can see, I love to draft high ceiling/low floor pitchers (Verlander, Street, Lincecum). I also had Rich Hill up until a few weeks ago, but I traded him basically for Aaron Cook and Nate Robertson. It filled my rotation so I didn't have to sign an SP this offseason, and it made my rotation more groundball-ish. Hill just kept getting slaughtered with the gopherballs. I also rarely sign pitchers in free agency, instead I trade for or draft them.

I still have several players who I will never use on my team. Melian, Ricardo Rodriguez, Rene Reyes, Nate Frese, Nic Jackson, etc. In order to waive a player, we have to pay them their salary for that year. My finances have usually been too tight to do that, so I have just let them rot away on my reserve roster. I traded for Reyes and Rodriguez back in 2003 or 2004 when they still had a decent ceiling.

So what do your teams look like? Let's see them!

Re: Prior
I gave up Chris Carpenter in a package for Prior right before each headed in 180 degree directions opposite of each other. How's that for luck? Still, I've had the best record in my league the last 3 years so it hasn't stung as bad as it would have otherwise.

by McLovin on Dec 14, 2007 5:28 PM EST up reply actions

chris mabeus?
i've never even heard of some of those guys.

by wily mo on Dec 14, 2007 5:31 PM EST up reply actions

lol...
I drafted Mabeus in 2004 I think, third round of a three round draft. He had been closing in the Texas League for Midland and was just promoted to Sacramento. I thought he would become a good RHP in my bullpen which was really weak at the time, and maybe develop into a major league closer.

Here's his stats:
http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/M/Chris-Mabeus.shtml

And like I said, some of those inherited players came with the team, and I just never got anyone to bite on them in a trade, or never got around to waiving them so I could save salary room for players that meant something. If a 1st-4th year player isn't called up, we don't have to pay them a cent. But if we drop them, we have to pay them the rookie salary for one year. So keeping those 5 guys or so saves me about 2 million. Semi-re-building right now, so if I have the spare cash after free agency, I plan on waiving them then.

my end of year roster
looks ridiculous because I traded away alot of minor leaguers/keepers (Gallardo, Pence, Garza, Andrew Miller, Morales, Liriano, etc, etc) and ended up with all top round talent (Vlad, Beltran, M. Cabrera, Sizemore, Mauer, Peavy, Smoltz, Webb, etc.

I like the keeper aspect (and was able to retain Bruce, Rasmus, and Antonelli along with some further away guys like Jennings, Villalona, and Brett Anderson), but there are just way too many trades, as everyone gives up early, punts, and will give away their entire team for a minor leaguer.

We had a guy trade away his 1st, 3rd, and 4th round picks for Justin Upton.

And players can only be kept for 4 years max anyway (after they lose ROY eligibility) so it gets a bit frustrating.

That said, I've won in back to back years, so I probably shouldn't complain.  I trade away all of my minor leaguers for value, and then just pick up  good ones before anyone else has heard of them.

by Galt on Dec 14, 2007 5:24 PM EST reply actions

Interesting
I use the exact same philosophy.  But 2007 for me was a little bit different.  I really did not have quite enough to finish in 1st, so I settled for 2nd.  And I kept the likes of Longoria, Lincecum, Upton, Butler, Kershaw, Price, LaPorta, Porcello, and quite a few "second tier" guys (like Antonelli, Marrero, Jennings, etc.).

I traded Rasmus, Asdrubal Cabrera, F-Mart and a couple others during the year to secure my 2nd place finish.  Rasmus is the only one I regret, but having an OF of Frenchy, Delmon, J-Up, Kemp and Magglio going into next year will ease the pain just a bit.  As you can see, I really did not "need" Rasmus.

Yeah, very deep minor league system (15 spots) and 14 teams with 23-man active rosters.  So the player talent pool runs pretty deep.

Re:
I'm in a 24 team sim league. Not going to post my roster at this stage of the offseason. Just lost 7 guys to free agency so my team is incomplete.

My team has won 124, 125 and 115 games the last 3 seasons. Scored 1200 runs the first year. Scored right in the 1000-1050 runs range the last two years, but beefed up my pitching depth to allow less than 620 runs each of those two seasons.

FANTASY NERD THREAD
all right.  here's mine.

league setup is interesting.  16 teams.  H2H.  6x6 (2B+3B, SB-CS, OBP not AVG; holds).

salary cap auction league.  $100 (million, but whatever) cap.  multi-year contracts (5 years max).  so, good starting players go for about $6M x 3Y; studs will get $10M+ over 5.  pujols is getting $20, but that's considered faintly ridiculous; that always happens.

minor league draft every winter.  25-man low minors roster.  you can keep minor leaguers for 3 years.  minor leaguers are free, salary-wise, unless you promote and use them, in which case they cost the minimum ($0.3M) for the rest of the 3 years.  at the end of 3 years, you can take them to arbitration: below-market fixed rate contract extensions.  $0.4M for 1 year, or $3M for 5 years (for that special player), or a range in between.

so, as in real baseball, player development and cost-controlled young talent become hugely important.  drafting a good player means you get him cheap for the next 8 or 10 years.  but it's not just straight dyansty keeping; you have to calculate costs.  at the end of 3 years a guy might be only in AAA; he looks like a stud, but is he really worth $3x5?  it's tricky.

here's my roster.  the league started before the 2006 season, and i took a sort of long-term rebuild-from-scratch strategy, essentially punting the first year in order to build a monster that would crush everyone.  my big auction investments were weeks, upton and mccann.

here's the current team:

C: mccann ($2 x 2)
1B: kotchman ($2.75 x 1)
2B: weeks ($6 x 3)
SS: tulowitzki (rookie)
3B: mark reynolds (rookie)
OF: bj upton ($4.5 x 3)
OF: chris young (rookie)
OF: mike cameron ($6.5 x 1)
DH: butler (rookie)

bench (stats count half)
C: salty (rookie) / napoli (rookie)
CI: huff ($4.25 x 1)
MI: asdrubal (rookie)
OF: dukes (rookie)
OF: juan rivera ($1 x 1)

SP: sheets ($11 x 2)
SP: lincecum (rookie)
SP: gallardo (rookie)
SP: greinke ($2.75 x 2)
SP: kuo / sean marshall / lannan (rookies)

RP: marmol
RP: okajima
RP: rafael perez
RP: mark lowe / fernando cabrera / rowland-smith
(all rookies)

minors:
clayton kershaw, chris tillman, scott elbert,
james mcdonald, dellin betances;
desmond jennings, jordan schafer, lars anderson, carlos triunfel,
josh rodriguez, wes hodges, gerardo parra, justin maxwell.

12 open slots for upcoming draft (plans heavily redacted).  plus i have the most money open for this year's auction by a fair margin (about half my payroll's free) even though i already like the team as it is.

made the finals in second year last season.  so far so good.

for some reason i can never get a real third baseman though.  i signed ensberg originally and that guy turned out to be a total jackass.

Compare our rosters
Huckleberry, I think we're in the same league, RRBL? well here is my roster, same set-up as Huckleberry's but I chose the Indians
C- Pierzynski
1B- Hafner/ Millar
2B- A. Cabrera/ Barfield
SS- Tejeda/ Guillen
3B- no one
OF- Beltran, Sizemore, Ibanez, Bourn, Maybin, Murpy, Lind
UTIL- Thome

SP- Cabrera, Smoltz, Sabathia, Perez, Hughes, Jurrjens, Danks, Detwiler, Byrd, Westbrook
RP- Borowski, Corpas, Walker, Turnbow, Ray (inj)

I need a thirdbasemen and am pretty stacked in the OF and SP any suggestions would be appreciated. Plus M. Cabrera and A-Rod are on the block, what would be a fair offer for either of them?
Our counting stats are R, HR, RBI, SB, BB, TB, AVG. Pitching are W, CG, SV, K, HLD, ERA, WHIP

by wir963 on Dec 14, 2007 5:53 PM EST reply actions

my keeper list this year...
In a very competitive 16 team league, each team keeps 8-12 players.  Format is H2H, with 10 hitting and 10 pitching cats.   1 player per position (LF, CF, RF)+Util.  1 SP slot, 1 RP, and 3 P per day.  Scoring includes both SV and Hld.  Pitching scoring favors low WHIP, high K/9, high K/BB pitchers.  Offensive scoring favors top-middle of the lineup, high AB hitters who get their value from hits, not BB/HBP.

Staff:
Chris Young
James Shields
Roy Halladay
Josh Beckett

Lineup:
C-Victor Martinez
1b-Albert Pujols
2b-Chase Utley
SS-Jose Reyes
3b-Miguel Cabrera
LF-Carl Crawford
CF-Josh Hamilton
RF-Alex Rios

Harden is also kicking around my roster as well, but I got burned by keeping 3 SP's last year-including Harden and Prior

This offseason, I've dealt Krod, Youk, Snell, Vernon Wells, and Zambrano to land Beckett, Shields and Halladay.

My Team
12 team al only 5x5 scoring. This is my early keeper.($260 cap)
Carlos Pena       10
Alex Gordon        5
Daric Barton       5
Howie Kendrick     7
BJ Upton           11
Delmon Young       7
Travis Buck        5
Adam Jones         7
CC Sabathia        17
Francisco Liriano  14
Joe Blanton        9
Phil Hughes        5
Rafael Betancourt  4
Huston Street      15
JJ Putz            5

Will also keep 2 of the following; Bobby Crosby(11),Adam Lind (5), Franklyn Guitierrez(10) or Andy Sonnanstine(10).(suggestions guys)
This leaves me a ton of money to buy the expensive players(M. Cabrera and J. Lackey maybe)

Also in my minors. Wade Davis, Jake Mcgee, Jeff Niemann, Hank Conger and Bill Rowell.

Did you finish last 2 years in a row?
I would suggest keeping Guts cause I think he is just better than the 3 other guys by a lot.  Than maybe Lind cause he's cheaper.  Sonny might surprise, he always seems to.

Not Last
I actually rebuilt the last 2 years(3rd from bottom and last year surprisingly snuck into the money, 4th.) Only about 5 guys really pay attention to the minors so you can really rebuild quite easily.
I was leaning on keeping Gutz and maybe trading some of the others for a pitcher. I also forgot to mention I have Dejesus as well for $9.

by fiftydrinker on Dec 15, 2007 10:09 AM EST up reply actions

Well, you have lots of young talent
Lots of them should start producing this year.  I really like Jones, but I think he's a year away.  Betancourt has a good chance to get some saves next year, and more the year after.  I would trade Liriano if I was you though.  Your team has some similarities to mine, but yours is way deeper (it's listed at the back end of the comments).  Hope you  win.

Dynasty League
Doing a message board 20 team dynasty league draft right now.

My first 6 picks.  (pick 16)

Carl Crawford
B.J. Upton
Alex Gordon
Justin Upton
Francisco Liriano
Clay Buchholz

And JUST missed Butler in the 7th round.  LOL

Sim League
I'm in a 30 team sim league with full minor league systems.  I'm currently rebuilding:

C-Joe Mauer/Yorvit Torrealba
1b-Carlos Pena/Daric Barton
2b-Mark Ellis
3b-Josh Fields
SS-Jimmy Rollins
UTI-Alfredo Amezaga/Brendan Ryan
LF-Xavier Nady/Matt Diaz
CF-Chris Young/Jacoby Ellsbury
RF-Corey Hart
OF-Skip Schumaker/Ben Francisco

That offense should be one of the best in the league this year, but here's the problem:

My starting rotation (I'll list them alphabetically to save from having to pick 5 starters):
Buddy Carlyle
Jose Contreras
Edwin Jackson
Andrew Miller
Ramon Ortiz
Anthony Reyes
Adam Wainwright

Obviously some guys with future potential, but currently a ton of suckage.

Bullpen:
Jose Valverde
Ryan Madson
Luis Ayala
Boone Logan
Tyler Johnson
Dustin Nippert
Tyler Walker
Brian Wilson
Jorge Campillo
Rudy Lugo
Edwar Ramirez

I'm also the leading bidder currently on Soria, since he's a free agent in our league. And I have the 4th pick in the draft, which Okajima is in, so I might end up with him too.

The highlights of my minor league system:
Jed Lowrie
Gio Gonzalez
Anthony Swarzak
Adrian Cardenas
Desmond Jennings
John Shelby
Ricky Romero
Kyle Drabek
Matt Maloney

My Team
NL only 40 man rosters, 12 teams, 5X5, $260 auction cap (OBA,R,RBI,SB,TB) (ERA,WHIP,QS,Hd+Sv,K:BB)
2 C,1B,2B,SS,3B,MI,CI, 5 OF, 9 P & SW (pitcher or hitter)

I have to cut down to 23 in January, then a max of 15 before the Draft in March.  We can keep up to 4 minor leaguers in addition to the active players.

C: McCann $7, Benji $10
1B: Conor Jackson $5, Cantu $5
2B: O Hudson $12
SS: H Ramirez $19, Drew $2, Tulowitzke $5
3B: B Ryan $5,
OF: Milledge $2, Upton $2, Duffy $5, Bay $42, Nady $3, Pierre $37
SP: Snell $4, T Hudson $9, Young $16, Billingsley $5, A Sanchez $5, Armas $5
RP: Benitez $10, Gordon $20

Minors: Rasmus $2, Vitters $2, Lillibridge $5, Fernando Martinez $5, Jaime Garcia $2, Kershaw $5

I'm going to own 25% of the starting SS in the NL.  Both Benitez & Gordon are going to be cut so I have no closers.  I'm also going to cut Bay, Pierre & Duffy.  Armas & Sanchez will go back in the player pool and I'll part ways with Benji & Cantu most likely too.  Finally, I'll have to say goodbye to Jaime.  Hopefully it won't come back to bite me in the derriere.

I finished 5th and with a good draft should compete for the title.  Mahalo

only thing I have
My leagues have not went so well recently and I am not in a keeper league right now.  But as far as bragging goes- the only thing I can say is that in 2005 the AL Only league I was in on CBS Sportsline was the #1 ranked league in the world on their site.  I personally never got ranked higher than around 100 or so but the person who won our league's regular season title was the #1 ranked fantasy baseball player on Sportsline that season and the person who won the playoffs was the #1 ranked player on sportsline the year before.  I finished around .500.

I resisted this as long as I could
  5 X 5, AL only, 10 teams, 25 man roster (18 active, 7 bench),  plus up to 7 "prospects" (no cost), $300 in-person auction
2 prospect draft picks of anyone without ROY eligibility per year, you can trade anything - players, prospects or prospect picks for the year upcoming.  $20 transaction budget ($5 per FA p/u, $1 for every MLB player, prospects/picks free).
The league will change this year from keeping 3 players to unlimited keepers.  We have had 6 different winners in the last 4 years - 2 ties for first in 2 years.  To say that it is competitive would be a slight understatement.
2 of the last 3 years I have bailed, last year I tried and failed.

C   _
1st Pena $15   FA pickup last year
2nd Howie $6   turned from prospect to big team last year
SS  Peralta $25
3rd Gordon $6   turned last year

_  I have about $100 for 5 active and 5 bench

Traded Jamie Shields ($3), Aybar ($8) and Maybin (pr) last year for Figgins and Ray - not too sad now that Maybin is traded
Traded C. Durbin, Greinke and Brandon Wood for J. Accardo and Loewen, dropped Loewen to p/u C. Pena.
To drop players in this league they have to be dead men (on 60 day DL) traded to NL or dropped to the minors.
I know Mathews and Hunter are expensive, but there just are so few OFs that will be available this year that steal and hit HRs.
Have these prospects left: T. Snider, Lofgren, Fukudome - now unusable unless he's traded to AL
