SPAMM

Really this is getting out of control.. the other threads are getting pushed off the front page, because this one guy wants to do all these polls right after each other.. Give it a day then go to the next one.. stop flooding the diaries.

Real simple solution
Three step process for you to solve your problem:
  1. Go to the bottom of the Diary list
  2. Change the number "10" to "50"
  3. Click "set"
There, now it won't cycle out the diaries in a day.  Simple as that.

Actually, this blog probably has the fewest new comments daily of any blog I go to.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

also
it's not like there's anything else to talk about.  It's not like these prospect rankings are pushing important topics off the front page.

Feel free to start many engaging non prospect ranking thread

Ironically
Of all the posts pushing diaries off the front page, this one is the most pointless and unrelated to the minor league ball.

by AucklandGM on Dec 14, 2007 3:22 PM EST reply actions

it doesn't have to do with minor league baseball
but it does have to do with minorleagueball.  the guy is aggravated, probably didn't know about the longer diary list fix, and probably isn't all that interested in the community prospect list.  these are all fine and dandy things for a person on this site to experience.  not everyone comes for the same reasons.

he says the community prospect listings are pointless.  you say his post is pointless.  everyone thinks something here needs to be better.  trouble is, just like the government, most of the time what needs to be better is never agreed upon.

i'm only responding because i see an amazing proclivity toward bashing everyone who writes on this site.  people are called idiots, told they're stupid, whether blatantly or between the lines.  i just don't understand what happened to people being able to let something go that is of no import to them.

and before you say it's ironic that i'm saying that and yet posting instead of letting go, this is of import to me.  i want to be able to read a diary on this site where someone isn't getting bashed.  can we please keep it to a minimum?  if we all were freaking scouts and had the weight of the world hanging on the accuracy, importance, and value of each word on minorleagueball, then it might make a little more sense.  but mostly, we're just people who love the baseball and the prospect side of it.

so...fantasy question?  ask away.  comment on a trade rumor?  do it.  trade evaluation?  put it up.  i'd even like to see a thread where some of the geniuses on this site could show off their acumen by posting their fantasy rosters...cuz you know we all have them.  or how about some trivia posted by the very knowledgeable among us?  i'm always up to learn a little or a lot more.

I agree
with you and disagree both the original poster and some of the threads here.  I don't really get bothered with seemingly "pointless" threads.  whether it be the "tell me more about..." or "fantasy question", or random OT topics.  Maybe during the regular season it would clutter things, but there's nothing wrong with it now.

Regarding fantasy rosters, sure why not.

12 team keeper, 6 keepers max (cost to keep is round drafted + 3).  Minor leaguers (anyone who still qualifies for ROY) count as a last round pick.  League counts OPS instead of BA, has standard IF positions + an MI and CI.  Outfield positions are LF, CF, RF.

I was in a push for the win, so I traded away a lot of my keepers/minor leaguers.

Current Minor Leaguers:
Hitters:  Rasmus, Bruce, Antonelli, Desmond Jennings, Angel Villalona
Pitchers:  Brett Anderson, James McDonald, Michael Bowden

We'll have a supplemental draft for '07 draftees (Price, Weiters, etc), so I'll likley drop McDonald and/or Bowden to get one of them - I have the 12th pick

Potential keepers (round it will cost to keep them) - I can only keep 6
James Shields (15)
Matt Kemp (24)
Kelvim Escobar (13)
Brandon Phillips (7)
Asdrubal Cabrera (27)
Nick Johnson (19)
Valverde (8)
Orlando Cabrerra (24)

Here's the deal
I was like that too; I didn't think very highly of the community prospect rating threads since they pushed stuff off the front page and came 5 at a time. But here's the difference: when I aired my opinion, it was on one of the community ratings threads, because I realized the ridiculous hypocrisy involved in making a thread to complain about diaries that were pushing other diaries off the front page that would push legit diaries off the front page.

But since then I have been convinced otherwise. They are an interesting aside and different way to go than just ranking prospects in a list, they stimulate plenty of discussion, and the fact is there are plenty of ways to deal with it. So you can alter your front page length, ignore the posts, complain about it in one of those threads and ask them to not make as many posts at a time, but why do you need to make a new thread for it? What's the point  to a new thread besides using it as a platform to grandstand and whine? How is something that is completely minor league baseball related considered SPAMM[sic]? You want SPAM? Compare these to some of the crap on here recently, such as all the sock puppets and their pointless threads or the never ending pointless fantasy threads, and I think you'll find that these diaries are just fine.

i agree that they're fine
the community prospect threads are interesting to me...the sock puppets?  they bothered the hell out of me.  but they're always gonna be here, right?

maybe he didn't feel like it would be taken very seriously if it was put in one of the community diary threads.  whatever the reason, it did cause some awareness and discussion on the matter.

it might not have been the best way to do it.  but 1/2 of what happens here isn't the best way, right?  or at least 1/2 the people here think that...on any given topic.

i wasn't really coming after you.  it's just sort of a culture around here, it seems, to have to answer everything anyone posts that might be contrary to the way someone else thinks.

to clarify "pointless fantasy threads"
by this I mean the ones that just post a list of 30 minor league players and say "hey guys I have a draft in a few days and want you to help me sort these guys out, could you rank them and annotate with scouting reports and descriptions?" Basically the people who don't actually do anything with prospects and just want people to do their work for them. Also league recruiting threads for fantasy or DMB or whatever needed to go; those were just getting ridiculous. Fantasy threads where people have to for example, cut 3 of 5 prospects and want to debate the merits of each guy with the community to help them decide are just fine by me (sort of like the one Galt posted above).

No
I like to keep the community lists moving.  You can still post other stuff that interests you.  People who are truly interested will check down the diary list.

hey
since this is pretty clearly directed at me, i'll respond. i've already said that i don't have time to put up new ones every day. since i think we need to get an average of two ratings per day in order to have a reasonable set of ratings by spring training, the only real solution is to do them in batches of about 5 at a time. i put up a new batch every few days, which is as often as i have time to compile the results and think up a few more guys to do next.

i do regret that the effect of the batching is to push five diaries off the front page at a time, but as others have pointed out, it's not very difficult to find those older diaries. either you can just adjust your settings to view more diaries, or you can click on the recent diary list and see 50 at a time.

in any event, it's pretty clear that it's not spam. what is this site for, if not discussion and evaluation of prospects? so calling it spam (or even SPAMM) is just inflammatory rhetoric, as i see it.

having said ALL of that, i definitely wouldn't keep doing it if it really was just me that seemed to be interested in the ratings. so it's not just "this one guy." it's a community ratings project, and many other community members have legitimized it either by explicitly voicing their support or implicitly by participating in the voting and discussion of the prospects. i just happen to be the guy organizing it.

You know what's more annoying than the sock puppet
The people who feel it necessary to follow every single post from every single poster that hasn't been here for two years accusing them of being Joba.

For the love of God, let it go.  You see someone mimicing a username like happened with WayneCampbell and Crimson, then make a thread, call it out and be done with it.

But when 50% of a thread's posts are "You're Joba!" "no I'm not!" "Yes you are!", it makes this site a fucking joke.

Go away all of you on both ends of the annoying aisle.
