Prior is non tendered...

Mark Prior was non-tendered by the Cubs. Someone will obviously take a chance on this guy, where does he end up and will he ever be a serviceable starting pitcher. He sure has taken some strange turns since 2003.

Hold on guys it's not over yet
From the reports and articles I,ve read, the guy has a big heart and is mentally tough.

Look at Chris Carpenter, people thought injuries was gonna eat his entire career and it didn't. Why not Prior change his career around.

Whoa, Slow Down
Prior has a big heart and is mentally tough? No offense but you must have read this in a NY paper because that is far from the truth.

From someone I know in the Cub organization, Prior is a prima donna that thinks every minor injury is career threatening, often refusing to take the ball when the trainers and doctors have said it is ok to do so.  I wish him the best of luck in his career, but this guy is far from the way you have described him...from what I have heard.

well
"From someone I know in the Cub organization, Prior is a prima donna that thinks every minor injury is career threatening, often refusing to take the ball when the trainers and doctors have said it is ok to do so."

Geez. It's hard to rip a guy for being cautious with his health and his career. Especially when it ended up that he was right and his arm/shoulder was damaged seriously. It's not the trainers who will have to do the rehab or lose millions of dollars of future earnings.

by McLovin on Dec 13, 2007 10:47 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

True
I am talking minor minor injuries.  For example, something he thought might form into a blister that never did.  Now, my buddy may be wrong and I was not there so take it as you want.  Let's just say he would never have pulled a Schilling and pitched with a bloody ankle.

by goose102977 on Dec 13, 2007 10:51 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe
It was one or two of those minor injuries that evolved into the major catastrophe his shoulder developed into.  The Cubs change their medical staff more than Steinbrenner changed managers back in the day so I'm guessing the lack of continuity didn't help things either.  Anyways, I hope he's able to return to the majors in the future.

Finally, I heard the reason why the Cubs let go of him was that Mark refused to sign a 2 year deal and Hendry wanted at least that.  Otherwise Prior would have been a free agent after the '08 season and we would have paid for another year of rehab without getting anything in return.  Mahalo

Refused surgery
I know for a fact that Prior was advised by his doctors and medical staff to have shoulder surgery awhile ago and chose not to.  IMO, he did even more damage to the joint in his latest/last comeback attempt.

Regardless of the contract issues that may or may not have existed with Prior, his arm is garbage and the Cubs know it.  If there was any chance he would return even close to what he was before something would have been worked out.

Sad
Being a life-long Cubs fan, I hope this is not the of his era in the uniform.  I still hope the Cubs can work out a deal to bring him back but it doesn't look likely.  He'd be a fantastic risk for any team.

Prior would be one of those guys
people will root for to do well because of all the hardship he's gone through physically.

Met Prior once
In about this time in 2004.

The dude is huge; I swear there's a race of giants out there living underground or somewhere else out of sight, and he's one of them.  It seemed like his shoulders were 3 feet wide.  You look at a guy that size and it all of the sudden seems pretty reasonable that they can throw 95 without max effort (what was all that talk about perfect mechanics so long ago?).

I didn't say anything during his meal (I was a back waiter for the evening), but wished him luck for the following year as he and his wife left.  He actually took a second and looked me in the eye and said that he appreciated it (and seemed like he meant it too).

I hope the guy lands on his feet.  Wouldn't mind if it was in SF though...  Cain, Timmy, Lowry & Prior would make a great 4 behind that one mediocre dude the Giants overpaid for last year (who better get on his game, FAST)

I'm proud to have seen #756

a RH Jamie Moyer
if he can pitch again I think thats what he'll have to be; the Prior of old is long gone, he just can't physically do what he once did, those body parts are burnt beyond repair.

That's cuz it's not our Crimson
this one is a troll; the real one is spelled Crimsonliederhosen. This is probably a vengeful Joba going back to his old ways.

Any mods around?

My Opinion
This has the Yankees written all over it big name low risk (money wise) high reward if he comes back even as a shadow of his former self.

And this is from a Sox fan.

Very sad...
... that its come to this. Watching Prior when he was on top of his game, I was sold that he was going to be one of the greats. He really did look like he was going to be the next Clemens, etc. He could seem to dominate anyone. Now hes out of a job and someone is going to get to take a cheap gamble on him. I'd wish the Tigers could work something out with him, just a little depth, but I really think hes done. Theres no way the Cubs would let him go unless they knew his arm was toast.

Take a look Omar
Hey Omar...if you are not able to get a top pitcher with mediocre prospects, please take a chance on Mr. Prior.

Thanks

i dont think the Yanks
will bc they have issues with their 40-man roster. signing him they'd have to remove a valuable prospect from it.

PS: everyone should ignore crimson. the guy's a prick and apparently tries to make himself feel better by constantly insulting others. it's quite sad actually.

This is not the real Crimson
I noticed earlier that the subtle spell change in the name.  The original is CrimsonLiederhosen with an "ie" not Leiderhosen with an "ei".  The first posts from this profile were made just yesterday in fact.  While not every post has been an insult,  this bout of mindless name-throwing made me feel it necessary for others to take note, and possibly take action.

As a cubs fan this hurts
However, from everything I have heard he didn't want to be a Cub anymore.  For them to spend money on a guy that won't be back until the all-star break and will not re-sign I guess it had to be done.  I really wanted them to keep him but if he didn't want to be a Cub then I cannot argue with the move.

This is rather obvious
I'm sure we all agreed on this ages ago, but man do those Twins look damn smart.

not necessarily
who is to say that Prior wouldn't be the most dominant pitcher in the game if he was drafted by Minnesota? He certainly was on his way in 2003. Its not his fault that Dusty Baker ran him into the ground.

Lets not forget that he was one of the top 2-3 pitchers in the entire game before his injuries, which probably would have never occured if he hadn't been so miss-used

by ScottAZ on Dec 13, 2007 10:26 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah and...
it wasn't like they were drafting Mauer because he was a position player and Prior was a higher risk as a pitcher - it was completely financially driven because they knew they couldn't afford Prior.

yes because
Twin management could see that he'd get a major concussion on the basepaths, have a batted ball shatter his elbow, and tear his achilles tendon

West Coast Team
$20 on an NL West team. Dodger, Padres or Diamonbacks all make sense.

He went to college in Cali, Dodgers have the $$$$, Padres have the training staff (a reason Peavy resigned) and the D-backs are young and going places.

Anyone remember
the Prior for Tejada rumors a few years back?  Funny how Prior is nontendered and Tejada is traded for peanuts within days of each other...

arm is trashed
supposedly the pads looked at his med reports and quietly lost interest...

if so, that's a really bad sign for the near future and just disappointing. Agree he ends up on the West Coast, won't cost much either, probably a two year deal laden with incentives or some such...

I can't shake the feeling that the Cubs screwed him up rushing him the first time he tried to come back...I wonder if Oakland could convince him to come to town...they don't have much near-ready depth but could wait on him...

by BGWoodsman on Dec 12, 2007 11:46 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Scary thought.
To have Mr. Injury Prone with Oakland's medical staff. Rumor has it there were many players very upset with the medical staff this year. I cannot remember if it had to do with diagnosing problems or what it was exactly.

Harden and Prior on the same team? My blood pressure would suffer if that were to happen.

Spend that Money
If I where Texas i would money whip the living daylights out of him. Texas has no chance for the division next year, will be playing all the young guys and alwyas need pitching. Heck, they out bid the Cubs on Fukudome, why not use 7-10 mil of that to gurantee to take a chance on prior?

All kidding aside, I would definatley make a run at him and Dallas McPherson

Isn't him for 5Mil a better gamble than the Gagne deal?  Or is it just me that thinks that?
Rios is the next Juan Gonzales, thats right, I said it.

Mark Prior...
is one of the saddest stories in my short sports life.

He coulda, shoulda, woulda been the best pitcher in baseball if he stayed healthy. No guy just comes into this league and does what he did in '03. He was one of the talents that lived up to the hype.

Some franchise can enjoy the fun of hoping he comes back.
