Mitchell Report - Thursday @ 2PM EST

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/12/sports/baseball/12mitchell.html?em&ex=1197608400&en=55cc34 ecc24a60f6&ei=5087%0A

Steroid Report Expected to Cite About 50 Players

"...What it contains will be officially revealed Thursday, when Mitchell holds a 2 p.m. news conference in Manhattan followed by a separate news conference by Commissioner Bud Selig to discuss the findings. But two people who are familiar with Mitchell's investigation, and his findings, said that the report would contain the names of more than 50 active and former major league players who are linked to the use of performance-enhancing drugs....

....Both said many of the names in the report are directly tied to information provided to Mitchell's investigators by Kirk Radomski, a former bat boy and clubhouse attendant for the Mets who pleaded guilty to steroid distribution in April.

In Radomski's plea agreement, he stated that he provided dozens of players with steroids, human growth hormone and stimulants from 1995 through 2005...."

"...The evidence that Mitchell will use to cite players is expected to be documentary in nature -- canceled checks, shipping slips, phone records -- and not based on positive drug tests...."

Feel free to speculate which all star players (since nobody cares about anyone else) that will be listed among the 50 or chide people who are speculating about it.

The key facts are that the source worked for the Mets and he was supplying between '95 and '05.

I think Piazza is a lock.  I also bet that Arod will be mentioned.

Are we REALLY going to go through another one of these exercises?

Not fair!
I woke up late. I only get 23 1/2 hours to make unfounded accusations with widespread finger pointing. I bet Rafael Palmeiro, Alex Sanchez, and Neifi Perez were all using though. I don't have any proof, but I just have a sneaking suspicion...

My guesses
I think the list will be somewhat Mets-centric, so here are my guesses on former Mets named:

Todd Hundley
Bernard Gilkey
Edgardo Alfonzo
Carlos Baerga
Manny Alexander
Roger Cedeno
Armando Benitez
Rey Ordonez
Mo Vaughn
Robert Alomar

This would squash Alomar's future HOF induction.

I think Piazza was clean, but if he's named, also bye bye HOF for him.

You do realize the alleged "healing properties" of HGH and steroids, don't you?  Mo was hurt A LOT during his time with the Mets.  I think he's a lock.

just yesterday, Howard Bryant mentioned in an ESPN chat that Vaughn admitted to using pro-hGH, an oral form of the drug, in 1998.

Im worried
that two of my favorite Mets were on the Juice.  So I hope that Howard Johnson and David Cone are clean.  If I had to speculate, and thats all this, Id say that Jeff Bagwell, Brady Anderson, Brett Boone, Rich Aurilia and Benny Agbayani were all on the juice.  Its gonna be a sad day for baseball

Mike Sweeney
Wouldn't surprise me at all.  I think people should be thinking more about chronically injured guys/guys who needed to quickly rehab, rather than the "well, this guy got jacked up and hit 50 homers the next season".  Although Brady Anderson should definitely be in the report.

by samjjones on Dec 12, 2007 12:47 PM EST up reply actions

Let's keep something in mind
Galt's second-to-last sentence was a bit misleading.  Radomski worked for the Mets until 1995--not from 1995 to 2005, the period during which he admitted to distributing steroids.  So while the list may very well be Mets-centric, I wouldn't be quick to throw those late '90s-early '00s Mets into the mix.  Hundley is a terrific suspect, in my opinion.

David Segui is another great example of an ex-Met who got to know Radomski when both were Mets employees.

If you really want it.
Here it is. I will list it by round, I picked second each round. I apologize in advance for insulting anyone by taking their favorite player or players from their favorite team. I am a diehard A's fan with a tat on my shoulder to prove it but I had no problem selecting A's/former A's.

1-Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds*
2- Rafael Palmeiro, Jose Canseco
3- Sammy Sosa, Juan Gonzalez
4- Jason Giambi, Jeremy Giambi
5- Gary Sheffield, Rich Aurilia
6- Ivan Rodriguez, Luis Gonzalez
7- Miguel Tejada, David Segui
8- Brady Anderson, Jeff Bagwell
9- Bret Boone, Eric Chavez
10- Brian Giles, Marcus Giles
11- Bob Abreu, Scott Rolen
12- Jim Edmonds, Frank Menechino
13- Ron Gant, Jose Guillen
14- Bill Mueller, Ramon Hernandez
15- Billy Koch, Roger Clemens
16- Andruw Jones, Jim Thome
17- Edgar Martinez, Ken Caminiti
18- Jason Kendall, Geronimo Berroa
19- Rickey Henderson, Jason Grimsley
20- Paul Byrd, Matt Williams
21- Tim Salmon, Rick Ankiel
22- Javy Lopez, Todd Hundley
23- Mike Cameron, Mike Piazza
24- Jermaine Dye, Carlos Baerga
25- Ken Griffey Jr, A-Rod
26- Bobby Jenks, Mike Sweeney
27- Darren Daulton, Mark Sweeney
28- Aubrey Huff, Howard Johnson
29- Rod Beck, Garrett Anderson
30- Gabe Kapler, Johnny Damon

I will break down in another reply.

by bl on Dec 12, 2007 6:54 PM EST up reply actions

Some breakdown.
At first I was upset I let Sosa slip to the third round. I am a little worried Canseco will not be listed because he already admitted guilt. Looking back I should have let him waste the early pick on him.

When he took Jason Giambi I had to keep it in the family, ditto with Brian Giles. I figured he would do the same with Sweeney(who I was planning on taking before this thread,) but he didn't.

I went in knowing the Mets trainer thing and was planning on taking Hojo, ome other names I took from the list above, thanks for the help.

When he went with Koch I decided to follow suit with a pitcher myself. I would love nothing more than to see Schilling and Clemens on there.

I tried to avoid Brewers and Red Sox because of Selig's connections to Milwaukee and more importantly due to Mitchell's Red Sox ties.

When he took Griffey I was more than happy to take A-Rod, wow was that round loaded with talent.

My buddy said if he ends up in the report then Frank Menechino is the best pick of the draft.

Of the guys he took I think Mueller, Andruw, Edgar, Rickey Henderson, Mike Cameron, Bobby Jenks and Rod Beck are long shots to be in the report and I would not have taken any of them myself.

We were going to go 25 rounds but we were on a roll and having fun so we went to 30. If we went further I would have taken a serious look at Ray Lankford.

(This entire post is meant as a joke, there is some truth in what I say, but I say these things very lightly.)

I would love to hear what others think of the draft and our "teams."

STEAL in Round 17... didn't he announce his usage?

Joba the.... PWN3D!

by ufoboy90 on Dec 12, 2007 7:54 PM EST up reply actions

Griffey....
I think he is the only one on the list that I really don't think belongs and has no chance of being on the Mitchell Report. I just don't think he juiced (wouldn't be surprised if he took greenies though cause I think over 80% of MLB players used them).

Not sure about Edgar and Rickey Henderson either, but I can definitely see the reasoning. I think Caminiti should have gone higher in the draft, but I could see why he dropping (The Canseco Conundrum that you mentioned).

The A-Rod one I think would be an even bigger deal than Bonds if he is on the list. As a baseball fan, I hope his name stays clean. He's a bit of sunlight at the end of the tunnel. Instead of focusing my hate at Bonds, I try to turn that energy into momentum for A-Rod to break every HR record Bonds has, to scrub them free of their taint (did I just say scrubbing taint? LMAO)....

Anyways, great idea, I bet it was a lot of fun, thanks for posting it. Ignore what other grouchy old men say about it, we're all just having fun.

Serious discussion on the report
Does anyone think it will actually change anything? Different testing procedures, penalty reccomendations, etc? If not, then while the names are juicy, the report will be pretty useless. I would like to see the report be more of a narrative about the Steroid Era than finger pointing certain players, executives, or dealers. State facts, draw learnings/conclusions, and make reccomendation.

Drugs have been around for a long time. There are hundreds of players in MLB at one time so a list of less than 100 players, is pretty pointless. The report, which was designed to shed some light and provide closure during the Steroid Era, will only feed the media with more ideas for speculation and call out how it unfairly it singles out certain players. The subject matter may change, but the media story will be the same. "We're all to blame. blah, blah, blah."

Who is going to be the sacrificial lamb for the Red Sox?  There is no way Mitchell exposes anyone of significance on that team.

Names
There are definitely some guys whose names I want to see on the list.  Darin Erstad, Troy Percival, Roger Clemens, AJ Pierzynski, guys like that.

If 1 or 2 of those guys get outed in the Mitchell Report, I'd be most pleased.

Tejada/Roberts
Do you think the Tejada trade has anything to do with what may come out tomorrow?

My buddy who lives in Baltimore heard the Cubs are "very close" to trading Sean Marshall and a minor leaguer (he's not as familiar as most on this board about prospects, he could not remember the name) for Roberts. Are the O's trying to distance themselves from the report?

My list...
And here's a stab at a list that a few friends and I all agreed on, and so that's the standard.  Recalled from memory, and they're all public figures anyway.

Vlad, tejada, giambi, pudge, juan gone, mo vaughn, frank thomas, canseco, bagwell, biggio, brosius, piazza, kevin brown, eric chavez, buhner, puckett, fisk, ryan, reggie, rivera, a-rod, ortiz, and obvi, Bonds.

Oh, and the Rocket IS ON THERE.

by GuyinNY on Dec 13, 2007 12:21 AM EST reply actions

I think
the only name that would really hurt MLB would be if ARod was in it.  He is supposed to be their guy that will break all the records Bonds has, but if he would be on there they will have to just go threw what they went threw with Bonds all over again.

Please don't let ARod or Griffey be on it.

Way too much hype
On the comment that MVPs and All Stars will be in the report:

Jason Giambi, Jose Canseco, Ken Caminiti, Barry Bonds and maybe Sammy Sosa - 3 MVPs who all ready confessed to knowingly using, 1 who confessed to unknowingly using (and accused in essence of knowingly using) and 1 who was named in a book and brought before congress.

And All-Stars should be even easier
