Mets Reject Twins Offer

So it seems the Mets and Twins were going back and forth to come up with a package for Santana..

Omar put his offer on the table that was GOMEZ, and 3 starting pitchers.. My guess

Gomez,Pelfrey,Humber,Mulvey

Then the Twins countered that offer saying the Mets must add either Fernando Martinez or another pitching prospect.. My guess Deolis Guerra..

I'm kind of happy this trade didn't happen..

Mets are stuck between a rock and a hard place now
they can't keep trading away their future.

One way of looking at it is, we expected their rotation to be bad last year, and they did perform up to expectations.

At this point, they should just sign some innings eaters and let Pelfrey/Mulvey sink or swim.

And most importantly, stop cheaping out on the draft.

Rotation
The rotation wasn't bad last year, it was actually pretty decent.  The bullpen was the problem.  Or did you just watch the last game of the season?

by MontrealMets on Dec 11, 2007 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

It was a really fragile rotation
and Orlando Hernandez won't be repeating his 6.64 h/9  again next year. The Mets rotation is not in very good looking shape

and
good luck replacing Glavine's 200 league average innings. which makes a already fragil rotation look even worse.

it's essentially Maine and a lot of injury / head case / kids (and kids that doesn't look like they are going to be great too)

I have trouble believing the Mets can make the playoff next year without some luck. though to be fair, it's not like the Phillies / Braves have a questionmark free pitching staff . but their offense is more consistent that's for sure.

Glad the Twins aren't listening
The Yankees package of Hughes and junk is better than F-Mart and a bunch of maybes.

Sounds like things are progressing between the Twins and Sox, and it will likely end up being Ellsbury/Lowrie/Masterson/???? for Santana.  They are supposedly haggling over the last player.

by BaseballBrain on Dec 11, 2007 5:15 PM EST reply actions

no..
I disagree..

Hughes and Melky is not better then a potential package of

F-Mart Pelfrey Humber Mulvey Guerra

Mets
why are they trying to look like buffoons?

If someone is trying to sell something and the best offer is $20 I wouldn't say "hey, let me get in on the bidding. I can top that and give you $17". You'd just look like a fool.

Yankees and Sox are saying one of two top guys. Yankees have Hughes as the centerpiece. Boston has Ellsbury or Lester. Boston is giving better secondary players and these deals are fairly even.

Mets are jumping in with either FMart or Gomez. That just isn't going to work IMO.

Great analogy
"hey, let me get in on the bidding. I can top that and give you $17"

That's a perfect analogy. That's exactly what they're doing, just getting into the mix to say they got into the mix.

by Pawtucket Pat on Dec 11, 2007 6:59 PM EST up reply actions

yeah
Most people forget its not only about top talent. Its about what the Twins covet.

Twins want one thing only IMO. They want one sure-fire prospect.

Hughes is that.
Lester + good peripheral prospects is that.
Ellsbury is that.
FMart is not.
Gomez is not.

So Minnesota is hedging their bets wanting both. I really doubt they do it for both though. They probably want one solid pitching prospect added. Maybe not their best but something.

Good stuff pedro,
I usually don't fet wrapped up in rumors but the offer for Cliff Lee was supposedly Milledge and Guerra.  According to some sources, Cleveland would not take Milledge as a gift but toyed with the idea of sustituting Gomez, if the Mets were willing.  Ultimately, the Tribe decided they were happy with the Organizational OFs they had.  I agree that the Mets look a little out of control.

by sdtribefan on Dec 12, 2007 12:09 AM EST up reply actions

too many rumours without substance
I'm a horrible anti-Lee guy. I've watched him pitch a ton. And he hides the ball awesome. But has no velocity and it's flat. He looks great for 4/5 innings then gets figured out. Maybe an excellent swingman? But it seems he isn't too happy about not starting?

What did you think about the rumours of TB offering Delmon for A.Miller? I'm one of the biggest fans of Adam but thought the Tribe should have jumped. Adam is awesome but I'm 95% certain he has a tear and needs TJ.

I'm not sure the Mets have any direction at all. I don't like some of the non-deals the Indians avoided. But at least this ship has direction.

I am afraid they are asking too much for Lee however. He's not on my Christmas list ;)

by pedrophile on Dec 12, 2007 12:25 AM EST up reply actions

YEAH
I'd do it.

It's easy to say you are paying double. Prospects + Dollars for Santana.

But Santana will never be available on the market until the end of his career. There is only one way you get him.

IMO - paying $8 million for mediocre players is stupid. Good GM's are all about bottom end young guys making peanuts and top end guys getting top dollars. Baltimore is the definition of the opposite. Ouch.

by pedrophile on Dec 12, 2007 12:01 AM EST up reply actions

I agree
Frankly, I see getting Santana here as a lot like when the Braves acquired Greg Maddux. Granted, that was a FA thing, but that one signing (best pitcher in the game, etc.) was the thing that set up their run of pennants. The Braves' dominance in the 90s is almost inextricably linked to signing Maddux, and frankly I think it's stupid to let something like a A or AA prospect get in the way of signing Santana.

Who rejected who now?
Sounds a lot more like the Twins rejected the Mets' pitiful offer.

by aCone419 on Dec 11, 2007 8:19 PM EST reply actions

Actually
The Twins Rejected the Mets first offer, Countered with their own offer, and the mets then rejected that offer.

I dont see how it's pitiful.

Keep Laughin soon enough Deolis Guerra will be one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball.

6'5 200 89-94 topping out at 96 Devistating changeup at age 18..

by Maine Man on Dec 11, 2007 10:08 PM EST reply actions

True
He will be one of the top pitching prospects, likely for the next three years. And in five years he may be a very good pitcher in the bigs. I don't see how the Mets could have a chance to get Johan without dealing a starting player from their team and turn that down. You think Pedro cares how good Guerra will be when he's retired? Think Delgado does? Make a run at this thing and lock up the best pitcher in the game and stop whining about how giving F-Mart and Gomez is insane.
Carlos Gonzalez--I liked him better when it was Gonzales.
